Mapping Software And Etrex Legend Vs Gpsmap 60

I have the Garmin Etrex legend with mapping software. I am looking to upgrade to the Garmin GPSMAP 60 for it's external antenna capabilities. I have a couple questions.

Can the mapping software with the Legend be used on the GPSMAP 60?

How is the GPSMAP 60 for an external antenna entry level unit?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The GPSMAP 60 has autorouting capability - The Legend does not.

The preferred map software for the 60 is City Select because it allows autorouting on the GPSr.

The preferred map software for the Legend is MetroGuide because it does NOT contain routing info needed for autorouting units.

If you have MetroGuide, you can load the maps into the 60, and you'll see the roads, and be able to search for POIs, addresses and all that - it'll work fine in that respect.

Just keep in mind that if you do use MetroGuide in the 60, and you do a "go to" and then select "follow roads", the 60 will APPEAR to autoroute. Don't be fooled because it's just the unit using its basemap's routing data to autoroute, and it's designed to route from city-to-city - NOT "Point A" to "Point B".

To take full advantage of the 60's autorouting capabilities, get City Select! It is one of the BEST features of the 60 series! But if you're on a shoestring budget and can't really afford the maps right now, you can use MetroGuide to have your 60 do for you mapwise what the Legend will do.

As far as the external antenna is concerned, I've used the Gilsson antenna with my 60C on several occasions and have been very pleased with the results. Be careful when disconnecting the antenna cable from the GPSr as the connection is a very tight fit! At first I used pliers to disconnect, but now I just swivel the cable around and allow the body of the GPSr to pry it out of the connector. Probably NOT the best way to do it and I'm not by any means suggesting that anybody do it that way - just sayin' that it's worked for me. Other than that, the two work well together.

I've never tried it myself, but I've heard that if you have Metroguide version 4 (or earlier?) you can do autorouting on the 60. However, I would agree that it would be better to go to City Select if you are going to upgrade to a 60.

Yes, that is true. MetroGuide Version 4 will indeed autoroute on the GPSr. An exception to the above rule.

The Gilsson antenna is the one I'm looking at. After searching around the net, I was able to track down the GPSMAP 60 and a Gilsson for around $270 total. Doesn't seem like a bad price for the added benefit of the external antenna.

Is that for the b&w GPSMap60 or the color 60C? Amazon is currently selling the 60C for $250 after rebate:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000189VQ...6268800-0140822 and the Gilsson/GPSGeek eBay store sells the antenna for about $20. I'd certainly opt for the color screen and larger memory (56 MB vs. 24 MB) if the price is reasonably close.

Hi there,

At first i agreed on having city select for a autorouting GPS like the 60 but working with it you use very little of the extra features.

i use waypoints resently found and selden address;

Loading metroguide with mapsource into a routing gps from the 60,76 etc won't activate the on road function.

But metroguide loaded with img2gps, a freeware program, does.

I check it with the 60cs with city select and de csx with metroguide both the same for what i use.

the point thinking your expert today make you feel a fool tomorrow.

But keep writing about it, it keeps the creative ones among happy to have something to play.

So you're saying that using img2gps will load the routing data contained in MetroGuide (that's only available on the PC using MapSource) INTO the GPSr :)

That's very good information! Thanks for enlightening the rest of the forum. But you are VERY RUDE about it! :P

try to read dutch, a language spoken in 23 countries and in your gps (nederlands)

http://www.geocaching.nl/forum/index.php?showtopic=3223

start img2gps upload from the installed map metroguide put a v next to the map you want and then upload to your gps

img2gps is improved and sendmap is intergrated; you don't need the extra's in the article.

This program is very usefull to load custum build maps you can find on various places on the internet.

take a waypoint, go to by road mean menu/setup/system/ demo modus.

double dutch?
