It's Time To Get Wet!

The river is high this year and we are going to have a good time on it. This year we have three river rafts and guides at our disposal for Sunday June 4. This means we have room for about 24 adults to ride the river. I am working on the event page for this trip. So keep watch for it. But if you want to come please let me know asap so we can reserve a spot for you. We are using equipment that belongs to a Church Youth group so we suggest a donation to them for use of the equipment.

Edit to add that there will be at least 10 caches to find while rafting the river.

Any age restrictions?

Dontcha worry boys, we'll just shift people around until everything's even.

I wish that I could go! It'd be worth it just to see Rec and Allanon rafting! <_<

It's been a long time for me. The last time I went rafting I had my own wetsuit that I was able to wear.

We'll be gentle. B)

So, are you saying that you don't have a wetsuit this time? We'll have some available, hopefully in the right sizes.

Nope, I haven't had a wetsuit since I stopped diving back in the Married Days. But even if I still had it, it wouldn't fit anyway. I do still have my booties though.

Booties help alot, the feet can get cold. But then they get numb so you don't feel them anyway. B)

Yay, it's time to georaft again. This time no ripped boats please B) . Fortunately the water should be at least 4 plus times higher B) than the last time we did this.

In answer to a few questions. Age is really up to the parent. I have taken my kids down many times (ages 8 & 11 last time we did it) but I usually wait for the warmest weather and mid to lower water levels. It's up to nature as to what kind of water we'll have ;) . There should be plenty of water but that could range from mild and fun to big and raging B) (which to some is scary and others (like me) is excellent). The river is class III (scale goes from one to five) which is perfect for beginners and thrill seekers alike. It's known as the safest river in the Northwest and is the most popular in Washington :D . See link for more info.

As far as kids are concerned just be aware that some love it and some cry like babies B) , depending on age and character. I would personally suggest 10 and up if they're decent swimmers.

As far as weight limit don't worry, these are commercial rafts and are very solid. I've taken 300lb plus individuals with no issues. Just keep your own personal health in mind. No heart attacks please B) . The river is rough and some of the paddling (and big waves) will get your heart rate going but you certainly don't have to be an athlete for this.

Wet suits are available but I believe the biggest we have is adult Large, maybe XL also. I wear a XXL I believe, and I am 6ft 5 inches. We may run out of certain sizes so the options are bring your own if you have one or we may be able to rent some from a local rafting company if needed. It will hopefuly be a hot day and in that case you may not need one. I usually go without if it's warm and sunny.

On that note, footwear is of utmost importance. No flip flops B) , you want water shoes or old tennies but something that can handle walking on rocks with a strong current flowing by. Wet suit booties work great if they have a rubber sole for walking, plus they keep your feet warm B) . Your feet will get wet (obviously) and the water is very cold :D so if you're worried about frozen toes then go for the booties (you can rent them (about $5) if needed since we don't have them available), or wear wool socks with your tennies to keep your feet warmer.

One other note that I know people will ask about is about money B) . In the past we've asked for $35 per person for the trip, but we're doing it different this year. The equipment and guides we'll use are from a local church that does this as a ministry for youth and community. The equipment is all commercial quality and is very expensive. Because this is a church though they simply ask for donations as a person feels they can afford, this way no one gets left behind because of finances. Keep in mind that to do this same trip with a rafting company will run you $80 or more. Our trip will be much more fun though. We're just asking to give as you feel you can afford and as it was worth to you. A suggested amount would be $35 per person but do as you feel on this one.

We're looking forward to an awesome time with lots of geocaching along the way including one inside a cave that you must literally raft in to B) (paddle hard).

Wow, I've written a book now.

I'll bring my own personal flotation device.

Also for those interested back when I worked in a local dive shop we would often rent wetsuits to the river rafters during that time of the year. I know a number of folks who would wear just the farmer john part of the suit without the jacket. Back then I think we had suits up to XXXL.

If it is a warm and sunny day I'd probably get too warm in my neoprene drysuit but I suppose they could just tow me behind the raft.

That's what I did the only time I've ever gone on a rafting trip.

HOLYMOLY!!! - To quote ARJ:

I am so there!!!!!

Goodness but there ain't nuthin' I like better than rafting a river. Have run most every river in OR (incl. a 5 day white-water canoe trip down the John Day - the weekend that Mt. St. Helens erupted!), plus a handful of honeys in other exotic corners of the world.

And there's caches to boot, you say???

Zippity-doo-da, color me... T-H-E-R-E!

Ok, you guys can only go if you promise to stay for the dinner afterwards so that I can visit with you!!!

I've already signed up for Monday off at work so I can not have to leave early (even if it means I drive over solo)...thus the request for two night's lodging... ;)

You can stay as long as you like. :D But just remember that the commune is in Georgia. B)

Hoooboy! I'll second that! Looks like this is going to be a great gig! Include 2 here!

I've been on this on a slower boat (see above) but it was still a great deal of fun!

I'm pretty sure I know what you are implying, and don't worry...that would be too much ugly for anyone to have to endure...

dang looks like this trip will be full before the page is even up.

Well if things get to bad I can pump up the drysuit and someone can ride me down the river.

I have the camera. <_<

Wow that didn't come out the way I meant it to. I blame the fact that I over slept this morning and am still on my first cup of caffeine.

I meant that if I wear my neoprene dry suit with a sufficient amount of air in it, someone could use me as a raft to ride down the river.

{I am self-moderating and not posting some really good lines.}

Speaking of cameras, I have a waterproof housing for my older sony digital camera, it is rated to 130F so I'm sure it'll handle the river trip. Now I just need to get a new battery for the camera. Anyone know where I can get an over priced camera for a sony camera cheap?

I did the river last Monday with Gary (owner of Osprey) and it was AWESOME. It's fast and deep with some of the best holes I've seen in years. This being #11 for me in 3 years, I was impressed with the differences this year from last year. Water was cold (I mean it was snow only an hour before) but it was doable with only the splash jacket. Of course I was with Gary and he's not about to go into the drink himself...

Since I've done the river so many times already, there is no need for me to do it again, but I'll be happy to have the coffee (and beer) for when you all get off the boats.

Page is up! Please log your intent on the event page. Ambrosia is going to be event photographer. I am willing to have t-shirts made for the event if you all want to buy them. I need a commentment from you as I will only order the amount of those who want them. I also need your size. I will be checking on prices tomorrow.
