Site Down

At the present moment and frequently in the past the site has been down at 09:00 BST. It is usually back up and running within an hour or two. I use the site often at this time, and I am getting frustrated at not being able to get on.

Why is it always down at this time? Which just so happens to be the middle of the night for most of the USA!

You've hit the nail on the head with the last line. It's the middle of the night for most of the USA. As the sight is US based it makes sense to do upgrades when most of the Americans are tucked up in bed.

Would you really expect Geocache UK to do all 'their' upgrades when the majority of UK users are trying to access the site?...........

If they done their upgrades at say 23:00 at their HQ in Seattle, this would put it either late at night or through the night for the USA, 07:00 for the UK and 08:00 for the rest of Europe. I know this doesn't help the rest of the world, but the largest amount of cachers outside of the USA I would think are in Europe?

It is still disruption for us early in the morning but it may be completed 2 hours earlier?

This is after all a worldwide site, and Groundspeak should try to serve as many of their customers as possible!

I don't want Groundspeak to think that I am having a go at them, but if you don't mention that it affects you, then they may never know and just keep on doing it the same way.

On a whole I think I get a good service for what I pay. But with that said I would like that service to be just as good as what the US gets, as I do pay the same.

I have only had trouble with the forums being down at midnight one time: this week; never before that (I am in the same timezone as Seattle). I am not on the forums all that often at that time. but I would have certainly bumped into this if it were happening frequently.

With regard to the logic of timing a back-up or server maintenance, remember that right at midnght Pacific time one of the servers starts sending out e-mail as fast as the pipeline can put up with it (Pocket Query results). So that would be a logical time to have the other servers in a mode that uses less bandwidth. But I really doubt that that is a factor for this issue becuase at that time of day there is plenty of bandwidth for all resources.
