Yep!

We support the idea. Portugal has a lot of nice caches where a 4x4 Jeep would feel at home, and, Jeeps of any color are very rare in here (TB ones).

If you want to see your Jeep travelling in Europe starting in Portugal feel free to contact Sup3rFM or US (or any other Portuguese Geocacher).

4x4 Regards from Portugal

OK, here we go: The Netherlands is awaiting for the first Green Jeep also!! There will be nearly 6000 Green Jeeps released in the US. Is there a possibility that someone will sent us JUST ONE of these? If someone wants to help us, we will pay the shipment to Europe by priority mail

... and if the GJTB owners wanted them to go to Europe they (Jeep) would have directed Groundspeak to do so (send them there and elsewhere). Sorry folks, you may have to wait afterall there is a contest going on that if I understand is only open to the US.

Whatever, it's stupid that the contest is only for the 48 lower US states <_< Keep Europe onboard!!

Just my 2 cents.

If you don't like Jeep's rules about who can win, you should complain to Jeep.

As for the TBs, calm down. There will be thousands of them, and they're TRAVEL BUGS! you know some people are bound to pick a few up take them outside the lower 48.

Well, maybe that´s the way Jeep does the marketing of his products outside US <_<

. Maybe that´s why i´m on my third 4x4 and none of them was a Jeep  . I´m not thinking on buying one either.

Just onother 2 cents

Ah, it's cool to let folks have them overseas, too.

I left an event with This WJTB but I later gave it to an Aussie pal. He was pretty pleased to be able to release this and another WJTB in Australia. They're both still floating around Down Under.

Of course... that WJTB was the first one I ever logged, and I was at an event - overseas - when I found it. Odd.

Either that, or just keep them...... Forever.

Just a thought, but has anyone outside the U.S. considered writing to the marketing departments of a European car manufacturer (maybe Land Rover?), tell them about the Jeep contest, and see if they might be interested in underwriting a similar contest with a Euro-centric focus? Picture thousands of ...ummmm...I dunno... BLRD (Black Land Rover Discovery) TBs roaming the countryside, Euro-cachers getting up at the crack of dawn or caching by flashlight for a chance to move a BLRD, etc etc etc. (And of course, us here in the U.S. begging someone to bring just one or two BLRDs over so we would have a chance to play. <_<)

Munin, speaking personally, no. Whilst I appreciate that the marketing effort of Jeep is US focussed (and so it should be) we do appreciate getting the icons across here although we should be happy to get them when some lucky blighter has a new Jeep in their drive stateside. European manufacturers (who are the same big car companies as yours - ie Mercedes/Jeep/Daimler/Chrysler, GM - Vauxhall/Saab/Buick/Cadillac/Chevrolet etc) tend not to advertise like that over here. I think - no doubt someone will put me right on that <_<

OK, first of all, the contest that Jeep is holding to GIVE away one of their Jeeps is for the lower 48 statesin the US only, because if you think it costs a lot to ship a little toy Jeep overseas, you should see the bill for shipping a full sized Jeep! The Jeeps are for a contest, no one should be keeping them, no one should be sending them overseas until the contest is over, and no one should, NO ONE, should be allowing others to log them virtually by giving away the tracking number. This can result in the TB page being locked permanently. Any TB logged virtually is subject to having the page locked, as it is considered abuse of the system. When the contest is over, if people have played fairly, the jeeps should start travelling all over. People who don't read the forums, who don't even know there is a contest will undoubtedly be sending them where ever they are headed. Relax, and be patient for the contest to end.

Last year I suggested if people wanted a contest in Europe, they should contact a European manufacturer. I couldn't tell you if anything ever was done about that.

Tell it like it is Eartha. I so appreciate that you have spoken up to tell people that they are not supposed to send any jeep4x4's oversees at all until the contest ends. And anyone doing so this year should be locked out next year in receiving the 4x4 by mail. There is planty of time after the contest but as long as they are at play it is a no! NO!

Very well, you would like to keep your travel bugs to your selves, I can understand this. It is difficult to share when you are favored.

There has been/are/will be released some new travel bugs in your county, special travel bugs with a special icon. That is cool. These new bugs are free, since a car company paid for them. That is extremely cool, and nice of this car company.

But travel bugs are international. Grounspeak is international; among other things it hosts/maintains web pages from travel bug pages all over the world. To do this it receives it’s funding from all over the world. Therefore it is strange that the Jeep bugs are solely for your 48 states, they should be available by everyone.

This limitation in ordering has nothing to do with the additional contest. The contest is a funny thing hosted and organized by the car company. To my opinion, in this contest the car company can do what ever they want. If they want a picture of you reciting poems in your bathroom, hanging upside down in a tree or sleeping a night over in a hen house; it is up to them. They can even make whatever restriction they feel is necessary. It is fine with me if they only want the contest to be available for white American middle-class heterosexual males; even if I do not meet to the criteria they have set.

But Grounspeak is international; it should not favor one area over an other.

The Jeeps should be available for everyone; I do not care if the contest is not.

There is a “conter contest” see The FEEP Contest

It would be extremely cool if a special (desirable) icon could be made available for this project. I hope someone in charge, will say something regarding this matter in the Feep contest tread.

Zilvervloot.

By the way, I’m not into a big polluting car, see my avatar. But I am into scoring the special icon, by shipping a bug around.

That's not it at all, it's a Jeep contest, held in the US only, and then only in the lower 48 states. Everyone is welcome to these jeeps when the contest ends.

You can still log a yellow jeep or a white jeep as those are free to travel now wherever they can, if people would JUST LET GO OF THEM! And could someone tell me what the value is in a few pixels on a screen? What's so special about icons? That's one thing I can't wrap my brain around.

Jeep is holding this contest, Groundspeak is just the means to deploy the game pieces.

The Jeep travel bugs are the game pieces in the contest and if they go overseas it lessens the number of opportunities to enter the contest, again, you can log them when the contest is over, if you can find one.

Jeep owns the TB's, Groundspeak doesn't.

Icons cost money (ok, so I guess there might be value there), the guy is doing it for fun.

I don't appreciate that comment. There isn't a single cacher here that is responsible to 'make it right' that you get a jeep tb hand delivered to your doorstep. You don't like the situation? then grow up and talk to gc.com directly. Don't insult people who aren't running this contest just because you don't get your way.

I'm trying to figure out why you think complaining in these forums will help this happen?? Unless the people at Jeep happen to frequent this forum they won't ever see you suggestions.

If you don't like who can win the contest, contact whoevers in charge of the thing at Jeep and tell them.

If you don't like where the travel bugs are being released you should contact whoevers in charge of the thing at Jeep and tell them that too. Maybe Jeep will change the areas the travel bugs can be released.

The various themes/elements may be specific objects, or may be more broadly defined and left to the imagination of the participant. Some themes may be available at the location at which the initial photograph may be taken, some may be brought to the location, or some may require additional travel to a second location. The theme for each month will be posted at jeep.geocaching.com no later than 12:00:01 a.m. (ET) on the first day of each Initial Judging Period.

The Photograph: There are 2 types of photographs which will qualify, photographs with the Travel Bug and photographs without the Travel Bug:

No other form of participation is valid; no mail-in entries will be accepted. Limit one entry per person/email address/log-on/user name/password/ Geocaching.com account per Initial Judging Period. Any attempt by any participant to obtain more than one (1) entry per Initial Judging Period by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, log-on/user names and passwords, Geocaching.com accounts or any other methods will void that participant’s entries and that participant will be disqualified. A participant may only use one location and/or Travel Bug per entry. Any attempt by any participant to use the same location and/or Travel Bug in multiple entries will void all such entries. Proof of submission or sending an entry is not proof of receipt by Sponsor. All entries become the exclusive property of Sponsor, and will not be acknowledged or returned. Any entry which Sponsor, in its sole opinion, deems to be inappropriate for publication will not be considered. An entry can neither name, depict, nor describe, any person, living or dead, (except as provided in these Official Rules), nor can an entry contain the trademark, trade name, or logo (other than the trademark, trade name, or logo on a GPS unit, [which trademark, trade name, or logo Sponsor and/or judges may fuzz, blur or otherwise distort when the entry photograph is posted on the web site, but any such fuzzing, blurring or distortion will have no effect on the entry’s ability to participate or win]), or a Jeep trademark, trade name, or logo), or copyrighted material, of any person or entity.

Use of Photos: By submitting an entry photo entrant (and entrant’s parent/legal guardian, if participant is a minor) grants a license to post his/her entry photo (or any part thereof) and/or use his/her name on the web site, jeep.geocaching.com or any other web site related to the Contest, at any time or times, as is consistent with the Official Rules, and entrants shall have no right of notice, review or approval of any such use of the entry photo and/or entrant’s name, and acknowledges and agrees that the entry photo (or any part thereof) and/or his/her name may be used in whole or in part, alone or in combination with other works, and that the entry photo may be changed, altered, edited or modified, used in distorted, illusory or composite form, or in any other manner, as solely determined by Sponsor. Further, entrant (and participant’s parent/legal guardian, if participant is a minor) warrants and represents that entrant has received all rights, releases and permissions which may be necessary from any person depicted, described or identified in the entry photo, and/or the photographer of the entry photograph to grant this license for the use stated.

By entering, each entrant (and his/her parent/legal guardian if entrant is a minor) represents and warrants that entrant’s entry:

(i) is the sole, exclusive, and original creation of the entrant and has not been copied in whole or in part from any other work; and,

Posting and Voting:By submitting an entry, entrant (and entrant’s parent/legal guardian if entrant is a minor) gives permission to Sponsor to post his/her entry on the World Wide Web in accordance with the requirements of this Contest. Entries for each particular Initial Judging Period will be posted at jeep.geocaching.com. Because the sharing of the geocaching experience is a part of the geocaching community, visitors to the site may view the entries and will be asked to vote for the entries posted for the photo that best reflects/expresses the geocaching experience. To vote you must have or create an account on Geocaching.com. If you do not have an account follow the web site’s directions to create the account.

To vote a voter must first access jeep.geocaching.com and then click on the icon, banner or text link to access the Photo Gallery, view the photos and vote. Voters need not be Contest participants to vote. A visitor may only vote for one entry for any Initial Judging Period. Once a visitor votes for an entry, and submits that vote as directed, he/she may not change his/her vote. Any attempt by any voter to obtain more than one (1) vote for any Initial Judging Period by using multiple/different email addresses, log-on/user names and passwords, Geocaching.com accounts, identities or any other methods will void all of that voter’s votes and that voter will be disqualified from further voting.

4. INITIAL JUDGING PERIOD JUDGING: All eligible entries for each Initial Judging Period will be judged by a panel of judges composed of one judge each from Sponsor (or its designee) Groundspeak, Inc., and Rodale Inc. Entries will be judged on the following criteria with up to twenty five (25) points available for each criterion: (a) Applicability to, and depiction of, Geocaching Experience, (:( Creativity, and © Humor. Up to twenty-Five (25) points will also be available for the voter portion of the Contest. Five potential Finalists (1 per Initial Judging Period, all of whom will receive First Prizes) will be determined by highest cumulative scores for all criteria awarded by the judges (and the voting) for that Initial Judging Period. In case of a tie, tied entries will be broken by cumulative scores awarded for Applicability to, and depiction of, Geocaching Experience. If tie continues, then ties will be broken by the entry with highest cumulative scores in Applicability to, and depiction of, Geocaching Experience, and Creativity. If tie cannot be broken, tied entries will be evaluated by a new judge according to original criteria, and tied entry with highest cumulative score by the new judge (and the voting) will be declared a potential Finalist. Potential Finalists for each Initial Judging Period will be determined on or about the above stated "Winner Chosen" date for that Initial Judging Period from all eligible entries received for that Initial Judging Period.

5. FINALIST JUDGING: The potential five (5) Finalists will each be notified by regular or express mail, and will be required to complete, sign and return within a specified time an Affidavit of Eligibility, a Liability Release, and where lawful, a Publicity Release and may further be required to provide additional documents, such as but not limited to releases from any and all persons depicted in the entry photograph and/or the photographer of the photo. If Finalist is a minor in his/her jurisdiction of residence, prize may be awarded in name of, or to, Finalist’s parent/legal guardian who must execute all documents and agree to all obligations and undertakings of Finalist, both on behalf of Finalist and himself/herself, or prize may be forfeited and awarded to an alternate. If Affidavits/Releases and/or additional documents and releases are not received by the date stated on the notification, or if any notification is returned as non-deliverable, or if a potential Finalist is found to be ineligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules, the potential Finalist will be disqualified. Only the potential Finalists who have complied with the foregoing requirements will be judged by a second panel of judges. The second panel of judges will be composed of one judge each from Sponsor (or its designee) Groundspeak, Inc., and Rodale Inc. Finalist entries will be judged on the criteria stated in Rule #4 (but not the voting) with 33 1/3 points available for each judged criterion, and the Finalist with the highest cumulative score awarded for all criteria, will be determined to be the Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize Winner will also be awarded a First Prize. In case of a tie, the tied entries will be broken using the tie-breaking parameters stated in Rule #4. The Grand Prize winner will be determined on or about 2/28/07, and will be notified by regular or express mail, on or about 3/5/07.

And to answer the question "Why can't we play the contest elsewhere?" read this.

It explains a lot.

Cool. I guess if Rhode Island wants a contest they are going to have to start pack'em in.

As if you can't go 20 miles from anywhere in Rhode Island, and be in another State <_<

But I suppose if your mailing address is there, you're out of luck.

I'm sure there was a State where residents were ineligible for the 2005 White Jeep contest. Florida, I'm guessing?

Last I looked Rhode Island was part of the 48 contiguous United States and District of Columbia ("U.S") They can participate in this contest only Hawaii & Alaska can not. The article Eartha posted just explained why contests are not valid elsewhere and Rhode Island was the example in the article. The Jeep people just had to jump through bigger hoops to allow this in Rhode Island.

Yes, and I was referring to the artcle on howstuffworks.com specifically, and Rhode Island being used as an example in that article. No one has ever intimated that Rhode Islanders are not eligible for the 2006 jeep contest. However, there was one prominent contiguous U.S. State not eligible for one or both of the previous Jeep Contests, and I'm thinking Florida? Anyone remember?

The Jeeps should be available for everyone; I do not care if the contest is not.

If you want the jeeps so bad go to gear.jeep.com and order them. And they even have the 2005's to!

And BTW why do you care so much about an icon anyway??

Never mind Zilvervloot. The first Green Jeep is on it's way to the Netherlands and we will release it as soon as possible into a Dutch cache

You are not playing fairly. You are taking away the chance for these contest playing pieces to be used in the manner for which they were intended. Expect angry emails in your inbox. People in other countries will have a chance to log them soon enough when the contest is over. They are meant for a contest that is held in the US only. What is so special about logging a Jeep TB if you aren't eligible for the contest? What's do the Jeeps have that other TB's don't have? An Icon? Oh boy, a few 1/4 inches of pixels on my monitor screen! woohoo! whoopie! Leave them in the US until this contest is over, dadgum it.

It seems selfish to me to want them overseas just to have the icon (or whatever reason) when the contest has hardly even begun.

I know they are a neat thing, and I can totally understand cachers in other countries (and especially the non-lower 48 US states) feeling left out by not having them shipped there, but can't you imagine that cachers in the continental US will be missing out on the chance to actually win a prize? It is not the "fault" of US cachers that Jeep designed the contest in this way, it is a little sucky. REALLY sucky for those not in the continental US.

But hey, the contest only lasts a few months, wait until the competition time is done, and THEN ship 'em to Siberia or Iceland or South Africa or wherever when the contest is OVER.

Wouldn't you (not aimed at anyone in particular) be rather mad if a company in your country (whichever) sponsored a similar contest where you had the chance to win a brand new vehicle, or GPS or other cool prizes, but as soon as your fellow countrymen received their TB gamepieces in the mail, they entered the contest themselves then immediately sent the TBs out of your country, thereby reducing your chance of being a winner? I'm pretty sure people would be annoyed :(

I don't understand the big deal about wanting Jeep TBs in Europe. If Europe had a similar contest I wouldn't expect anyone to send one to the US until the contest is over. Most of all I don't understand why a cacher would purposely break the rules and take the Jeeps overseas before the contest is over. Shame on you who do that. People just need to follow the rules and not make their own rules up. These people who "make their own rules" should be removed from Geocaching.com. I love the United States of America!!! God Bless America, land that I love!!!

Sorry but some folks just need to relax. While I haven't seen any finger-pointing about my earlier post, let me explain.

In Iraq, cacher Geezer held an event on Christmas Eve of 2005; this was the first event in Iraq, too. Generous cachers donated a bunch of items and sent them over: ready-made caches, misc. swag, a bunch of TB's, and the really nice part was they sent snacks, toiletries, etc. The event was small but successful and all who attended were grateful.

Anyway, as it happened at least 3 WJTBs made it over there. I logged my first 2 WJTBs over there (go figure). I logged one because it had been placed in a cache back home, but AFTER I visited that cache; so I logged it to 'feel at home' as odd as it may sound.

Another I logged and took with me. Another WJTB was logged and taken elsewhere in Iraq, too. As it turned out, the WJTB I took and one of the other WJTBs in-country ended up at another event in Iraq. An Aussie military chap I met logged one and I gave him another one so he could move them around Australia. They're both still in that part of the world being enjoyed by others.

So I guess the point is, was it wrong for people to send them overseas, to an event, and then subsequently two of them end up in Australia? I don't think so. The rules are understood, but jeesh, sounds like someone would be upset about this. Out.

Well, well, three negative reactions on just ONE of the 5500 Green's traveling in Europe and NO emails! It's correct we cannot compete with the Jeep contest, but do we want that? I think we just want to have a hunt for a special TB, a hunt for a new icon and to hold the Green one in our hands.

Do not forget (and I did look at the statistics of individual cachers in the US and Europe!) that the change to meet a Jeep is much larger in the US than in Europe, even AFTER the contest most of the Jeeps will stay in the US or disappear forever. Maybe after one year of the release of the Green there could be a couple of hundred Greens in Europe and a couple of thousands in the US. In Europe it always will stay a rare TB! I also expect that before the 1st of January 2007 much more Green TB's will disappear in the US, than Greens will ever travel in Europe!!

The official Jeep/Groundspeak rules do not say anything about keeping the Green Jeeps in the US till the contest is over. So what about fare play?

Not applicable, really. The contest was over at that point, December 2005. Just what the people are saying in the thread (I guess), who cares where they go when the contest is over?

well then here's an objection for ya, from one who will probably never see your jeep, but thinking of others HERE who can enter the contest who'd like to. B)

there's lots of contests I can't enter that are held here in the states where I am.. I don't make a big fuss over it. that's just the way life is.. gee.. life isn't fair. That said, I do realize there's a lot of folks with this entitlement thing going who are trying to make it so ;)

If they do the same distribution system next year, they should blacklist Dosido and any others who violated the terms of the letter agreement they signed.

And what is in the letter agreement :P

That they will place it in a cache within 2 weeks and that they agree to the rules of the contest. The rules of the contest state that with regards to relocation of the travel bug, "(any such location must be in 48 contiguous U.S./DC)".

So as you see, mailing a GJTB to a cacher out of the contest area violates the rules in more than one way.

Since you asked.

Also reminding the readers that I stated that I myself was more than happy to send the first one out of the country AFTER THE CONTEST PERIOD ENDED. No one is trying to prevent anyone else from seeing the jeeps or getting the icon. It's only fair that those people who are able to participate in the contest get as many chances as possible. Removing the jeeps from the contest area limits that.

As far as I know, there were exactly three cachers in my area to receive a jeep from Groundspeak. Based on last year's numbers, there were at least 15 individuals/teams that submitted photo entries when they had the opportunity to. Even if other jeeps make their way here, others will be moving out of the area, and with reasonable holding time up to 2 weeks to get the photo op, there are going to be a lot of cachers not able to enter with a photo that includes a jeep. We could split hairs and say that they don't need the jeep, as there is an alternate way to submit a photo for the contest, but who are we kidding? Besides, having an alternate way to enter the contest does not make it any less wrong for jeeps to purposefully be sent out of the contest area when all most of us are asking for is a little patience.

I thought you can enter the photo contest whether or not you actually find a GJTB:

If a participant does not find a Travel Bugvisit jeep.geocaching.com and visit the cache page for the location where the Travel Bug was supposed to have been located. Then click on the link to the Travel Bug web page where the participant can click on the "Submit Contest Photo" and follow the on-line directions to submit a photo(s) entry. Once an entry has been submitted, participant will be notified that the submission is under review for appropriateness.

Seriously, although the rules state you don't need a jeep in the photo to win, I'll believe it can happen when I see it. Chances are much greater that your photo with a jeep in it will garner the votes and the attention of the judging panel. No matter though, the point is that sending them out of the contest area before the contest ends, no matter to where or to whom, is not fair to those who are eligible to play, and just plain not cool.
