To sell or not to Sell……

This subject has been brought up many times and it usually goes well for some, and others hate the idea :D . I woke up this morning with an invoice for a Satin Gold 2007 Compass Rose coin :D , I was shocked since I had not heard anything for awhile and it has been some time since the sale of these coins. I gladly sent payment via Paypal to acquire this coin :D .

So you have got to be asking what the point of this thread is. Well the acquisition of this coin completes an extra 5 coin set of Unactivated 2007 Compass Roses that I have contemplated selling via auction  . The purpose of this sale is to re-landscape my new home. To me a worthy cause since the coins are extras. In addition, I have considered auctioning 2 Harry Potter Event Coins :D and a Blue Jeep Geocaching Adventure  .

I know I am going to take some flack for doing this since some of these coins I have obviously traded for :( . Please realize that even thought I traded for some of these coins, I have traded for multiples of the same coin :D . It makes sense to me to sell these extra coins and put it into my yard :D .

I also realize that this may or may not hurt my chances of trading in the future since some people may be worried that I am just going to sell them :) , to some they may take offense. I am a firm believer that once a coin is traded to someone that coin no longer belongs to the first person , I have always treated my coins I trade that way and would hope that people would think no less of me :D .

So now the real question is, as a coin collector what would you pay for a full set of 2007 Compass Rose coins? What would you pay for a Harry Potter Event Coin?

I know where you are coming from Dennis. I am having to sell several coins to pay for some very unexpected vet bills. I also believe that once the coin is in the new owners hand that they are free to do whatever they wish with it. I have no problem with you selling some of the ones we have traded either.

Now to get down to your real question--What would I pay. Well in this real life case right now I couldn't pay anything :D but would love that two toned!! I will watch for your auctions!!!

Dennis I am all for you fixing up the home, but I would have objection to a sale of the Blue Jeep Geocaching Adventure , without the approval of the 5 in the group as this was "our" trade only coin. If 5 agree go for it. You have my vote up front. . Glenn

Thank you Glenn for your support, just for the record by the time I was done typing that post I had the quantities run through my head of how many where minted, and was concerned about what that would do for those that have them.

As a little side note, please note in the very last paragraph where it ask "what would you pay for ......." , no where does it mention the Geocaching Adventure Blue Jeep  . That was how fast I thought about it and how fast I made my decision  .

If you asked me for a trade of my trade-only coin then turned around and sold it, I wouldn't be too happy about it.

If I asked you to trade something for my trade-only coin, and you turned around and sold it, I may briefly wonder why you didn't like it, but I would have no real issue with it.

If you have fulfilled others' trading goals by accepting doubles of coins, more power to you and I personally wouldn't understand anyone taking issue with you selling those coins.

Edit to add: As for coins you bought I can't see any issue at all with selling them in any way and for any purpose your choose.

Well now this brings up another interesting question that has been discussed in the past. Do I auction the set or do I break it up and do them seperately?

 Go For It! I'd list them individually though. And be more than fair with your shipping. :)

:D I'm gonna have a few auctions up next month myself to finish off my, "I'm gettin' a Kayak" Fund. :D

If I do them individually I would do something that is unheard of, I would pay for shipping :D !!! It only costs $1.00 or so to ship I have no desire to earn an extra $8.00 per coin by charging shipping  . If I sell them as a set I will do something else that is never heard of :( , I will charge actual shipping :D .

I would be lying if I said I have never overcharged for shipping but I am tired of being gouged myself so I will not be passing it on to you :D .

With the 2 tone selling at over 100 bucks, the auction of the group would be very limited to the few with deep pockets, Just a though there. Break them up perhaps the others in a set and the 2 tone seperate may make the 2 auctions somewhat within reach for many other people with pockets less deep

There is a Two Tone closing in a few minutes that is under $100, who knows what the last few minutes will bring. I was just looking to see what is being auctioned and I see the market is somewhat flooded with singles that aren't selling for very much. I am leaning towards trying first as a complete set then if I have to break it up I will relist the Two Tone seperate then the remaining four coins as a set.

I truly believe they are yours and you should do with them as you please. It sounds like you made the initial trade in good faith but REALLY are you going to take these coins to your grave.

But I do understand that some trades came with some stipulations, but still they are your coins. Just my feelings. :)

Life Happens expenses arise and you do what you've got to do.

I have bought coins off of auction sites (and still do :D ) so I really don't mind, I know my limit and if it goes beyond that I don't bid anymore.

It will be interesting to see them on the auction sites. :(

Pretty cool that you were up front about it as well, even though I don't feel it was necassary.

I would say that you should do whatever you want with the coins as well. If we had to keep everything we had bought, been given or traded for (coins or otherwise) in our life, things would get out of hand.

Once I trade or give something to someone, it is theirs to do with as they please. I don't have the time or desire to keep tabs on every little thing I've given to people - I'm just going to enjoy what time and things I have, as well as the people around me.

Good luck with the yard - post some pictures!

If someone sold one of my trade only coins (my XLEs or the Decoder v1 LE or v1.5 LE) I would be upset and would think twice before trading with them again.

If someone sold one of my coins that I sold to the public (my regulars and or the Secret geoAgent LEs) I would not care at all.

Short answer: Coins become yours once in your posession. Do with them what you like.

I can sympathize with others, where I would be disappointed to see my personal coin for sale, but **** happens in the real world outside of these forums.

Slightly off topic but I'd really hate to see somebody following me around to caches, picking up my coins, and the turning around and selling them. That rubs me the wrong way. There's already been an instance of this happening to broker a trade, but hey, what can I do, right?

In any case, you bought or traded for the coins and own them. Sell them, drop them, make them into a sweet looking belt buckle - your call.

Just for clarification purpose, I some what have the same views as many of you concerning Personal Coins, but just for the record, the coins I will be selling are not personals. The closet thing to a personal would be the Harry Potter but I acquired those through legitimate trades that had no stipulations.

Link to comment

once you trade or buy a coin it is yours, you can do as you please. although promises should be kept if possible on the personals.

someone did have the set of four "regular" compass roses on starting at $99 and they didn't get any bids.

I would think breaking them up would work better....who knows, with the added two-tone you have you might get a decent bid

goodluck and happy yardworking

You know I have to tell you I have learned to adopt the thought that all I have is a bunch of metal that is sitting in shoe box :) . It would be the same situation if I was to die :D

I would pay Euro's for both. I hope that answers your question.

tot cache,

team Wij Drie :P

But how many of the Euro's would you pay?

Can't hold anything against you Damenance for selling you coins to finance something. Not at all. Gutted that it is some 2007 Compass Roses as I never had a chance of getting the additional 2 being out side of the US :P

The people I really hate are the ones who know a coins is going to be sought after and rush in and buy up 10 or 20 of each with the specific intent of selling them to make money - thus the coins sell out and people who genuinely want them miss out. But you definately don't fall in the this category. Go for it.

Sell them. They are yours.

If folks traded with you then they recieved something they value in trade. I personally have no problem selling any coins that I paid for (commercial coins).

As for personal coins, I would offer the person whos personal coin it was the option of "un-trading" if they wish. This would be a courtesy.

I have some "trade-only" coins for face-to-face and caches. If someone ends up with one they don't want, then they can further trade it or even sell it. Once it is out of my hands it is out of my hands.

I rarely have duplicates of personal coins - if I find a coin I have I just leave it in the cache and I don't trade for extras.

As for "super-rare" coins that are created in "special" ways by "special" commitees.......

I think the are "special" :P

Traded or not, they are your coins. If you want to sell them then sell them. You don't need permission from anyone here.

Except for the Harry Potter coin. That one should be given away to the first geocacher you see (online or in real life) named rasj. It would only be fair.. that's all I'm sayin. :P

I have been having the same issue. I haven't sold any coins on e* yet, but I've pretty much decided I will. Since I'm now a full time student and the grad student funding doesn't cover all the bills, there's less money for coins... but still lots coming out I'd like to get!

I also got an invoice today for satin gold CR's that I gave up on ever seeing a long time ago, and I'll probably auction at least some of them at some point since what I get for one will pay for 2 or 3 of the other new coins on my seeking list. I know that's not the spirit of geocoins, but while I'm not working full time I've had to start thinking about how my collecting might be able to support itself.

Any speculation of prices is fraut with danger, therefore the decision shouldn't be based heavily on end price without setting a reserve. If you set an unreserved price on ebay (see people, we can say this word without the world imploding :P ), you must accept that they could go for $0.99 as much as they could go for $1000.....that is "your" risk. I'm sure you probably know this, though it needs to be said.

ok got my breath back - i'm not usre what i'mmissing here - i really thought i minted those jeeps for a group that understood "trade only"? that was the agreement? and weren't you a bit upset about others perhaps not sticking to the gameplan??

Edit: oh ha ha - is that what a masked smiley thing is - irony! Found my missing sense of humour

Edit: oh again - the OP has put me straight - it wasn't an april fool joke I was missing the point of. Well certainly no "crime to think about it" - WE didn't make a contract part of the jeep coin process.

Dude, they're your coins, fair and square. Anyone who would think less of you is petty and unworthy of being traded with in the future. They traded. The item isn't theirs to pass judgement on any more. They may not like it, but that is wholly their problem.

You do what you feel is the right thing to do, and don't worry about the whiners.

However, the whole issue could have been sidestepped simply by not mentioning it here.

That's definitely a nice gesture that would gain you a lot of high ground. But I don't think you should feel even slightly obligated to make it. Perhaps people who are grossly concerned about "their" coin being sold should offer to untrade?

I think the onus should be on the people who don't want their coins sold to make the effort, not the other way around.

And, since we traded some time ago, if one of my coins helps finance your house repair, so be it! You will have to live with the knowledge that there is a squid in the wall... muhahahahahahaha :o

Personally, I'd like the opportunity to trade/buy my coin back. I know many other people who would love to have it if it's one you are giving up.

As a reminder this post was only concerning the Compass Rose coins and the Harry Potter coin. I am not getting rid of any coins out of my "keepers". The coins I will be selling are my extras. I have no desire to sell personals I have trade for. I am not in some hardship crisis, rather impatient (who me  ?).
