GEOCACHING MAGAZINE

Recommended Posts

I have just found this magazine. It's published on pdf's, but are all in Danish:

I like a nice Danish, especially the orange ones, especially if they are fresh and the coffee is hot.

LOL

I also found a swedish one as well. Link

I'm lucky that I read both Danish and Swedish......

Can't read a word of it, but judging from the pictures some of their hides are tough!

We are getting some great new stories in, thanks to all for your submissions!

The Online Geocacher - http://onlinegeocacher.com

I am setting up a free subscription service so if you want to get an email when a new story is published go to the site and sign up - no spam, no ads, just an email alerting you to new stories as they are published.

Geocaching stories, news, product reviews, whatever - send it to TheAlabamaRambler@gmail.com and I will publish it.

What would be good (at least for me) is if you included the full text in the RSS feed. I would find that helpful.

OK, will do... as soon as I figure out what an RSS feed is and how to set it up!

The publishing tool that I use, presspublisher.com, has an RSS because I see an link on the bottom of my page, but I have no idea what it is.

If you know how to set up what you are asking for send info via email to TheAlabamaRambler@gmail.com; if it's easier to do than to explain I can give you admin rights to set it up, otherwise I will call tech support at presspublisher and get them to help me.

RSS is Really Simple Syndication. It allows a site to syndicate its content without a user sucking up the bandwidth to visit the site. Your software creates a feed every so often. Those who subscribe to it check every so often for updates.

For those who read a variety of blogs, news sites, etc., it makes managing the daily read much easier. I have several hundred feeds I read daily. If I had to go out to each site, I would read far less. My software aggregates the news I am interested in and displays it.

I am totally unfamiliar with PressPublisher. My cursory look showed no documentation on their site. I imagine that somewhere in the admin panel there are settings for how much content to display in the feed.

Best of luck.

If you run your feed through feedburner, you can use that to set up easy email subscriptions. It isn't too hard to set up and is free. Just head over to feedburner.com to take a look. It will also allow you to get some nifty feed use stats.

The one downside to feedburner though is that you lack some access to black content scrapers from the feed. But with a non-commerical publication, you might not care about that much anyway.

Otay, I passed your questions to my Tech Support:

Hello!

I have readers asking about RSS feeds and FeedBurner. I see an RSS Feed link at the bottom of my page, so I know that you have one, but I know nothing about it and don't see any documentation or user guides.

Here's what they are asking:

MY POST:

I am setting up a free subscription service so if you want to get an email when a new story is published go to the site and sign up. Whenever I post new content I will send a notification email to subscribers.

END

This brought two questions from readers:

QUESTION 1:

What would be good (at least for me) is if you included the full text in the RSS feed. I would find that helpful.

RSS is Really Simple Syndication. It allows a site to syndicate its content without a user sucking up the bandwidth to visit the site. Your software creates a feed every so often. Those who subscribe to it check every so often for updates.

QUESTION 2:

END

So, can I do what they are asking for? Give them access to my magazine (http://onlinegeocacher.com) using an RSS Feed with all content and/or FeedBurner?

If so, how?

Thanks!

Here's the feedback from Tech Support re RSS and Feedburner:

Hi Ed,

The answer is yes and no.

1. Yes, you have RSS.

2. Yes, you can register for Feedburner and feed your content to them. Register here and give us the account info and we will install it for you. http://www.feedburner.com

3. No, you cannot feed the FULL article through RSS. With a full custom installation (paid versions) we can then modify this for you to offer the full articles with RSS. But not on the free shared account. Frankly, as a general rule, you don't really want this, which is what one of your comments/questions were eluding to. It would allow other sites to completely present YOUR entire site on THEIR website.

4. Notice the "RSS" link in the footer/bottom of the page.

5. In the control panel, in the settings page, there is a place to insert your Feedburner link. This is just another type of RSS feed already included in the system.

So, to offer what y'all are asking for I will have to upgrade to a paid version of the publishing tool, which I plan to do in the near future but can't do right now.

I don't know how I feel about their concern in item 3 that anyone with full-content RSS could then present the whole ezine as their own... My mission is to get these stories out there, I don't care who gets the credit, so if anyone wants to mirror my site that's cool with me. My concern here would be that someone down the feed would add advertising, for-fee or inappropriate content - I want this ezine to stay family-friendly, free and ad-free and don't know what might happen if I allow full-content RSS.

What are your thoughts?

Edited by TheAlabamaRambler

I run a full feed through feedburner and an email subscription service with full content with no problems and at no cost. That may be a function of using Wordpress to publish though, because each feature is run through the same feed as a full blog post.

Another similar service for setting up easy email subscriptions is feedblitz if you want to see what they offer. I haven't personally used them.

Regardless, running a partial feed is often fine. Folks will have to click through to the site to read the whole thing though, but it also helps prevent full content theft.

One more potential option: Does Press Publisher use plugins? If so, there might be one for creating email subscriptions.

You can become a victim of content theft without running a full feed, although scraping happens more often with full ones. When/if (probably when unfortunately) that happens, drop me an email and I'll send you some sample letters and DMCA take down notices for you to send and some misc. resources. It isn't hard to get a site's host and ads pulled out from under them when they take your content and present it as their own for profit. I've done it multiple times now. It is a bit time consuming though.

You might also find what are called "splogs" scraping parts of your content and putting it up on a commercial site. You can also send the same notices with those, but personally I let many of them go because they tend to never rank high in search engines or actually make any money. Most are run by kids who fell for some "get rich on the internet" sales book. It is the full article theft that I go after--something that unfortunately is hard to avoid these days if you are in the business of internet content provision.

Latest new via email....

Well I have bad news, good news, and great news.

Bad news first, might as well get it out of the way. As you have all probably figured out we had a few more delays and the Mar/Apr 2008 Premiere Issue of Geocacher Magazine has become the May/June 2008 Premiere Issue.

Good News is that our new website should be up and live by this weekend. We are very excited about this site. Our desire is for Geocacher Magazine to be about our readers and fellow cachers. With that in mind we have created a website that will make it easy for you to send us your stories, pics, suggestions and experiences. Throughout the magazine you will see an “ABOUT YOU” feature. This is our salute to you, be it great camos, great views, or just plain old great stories. Log on to the website and click on the “ABOUT YOU” button and for each submission you send you will be entered into a monthly drawing for a gift card from one of our supporting advertisers.

Last but not least, the great news! The magazine is in the mail. So check your mailboxes next week. Many, many thanks to all of you for your patience and support as we figure this out. We are so excited to finally get this magazine in all of your hands.

We are heading off to GeoWoodstock and looking forward to meeting many of you there. Please look for your souvenir program with the July/Aug issue along with a full report on the event.

Happy Caching!

I'd like to see if they'll sell a single-copy of the magazine as I'd really be interested in purchasing it if I liked the look and content. It's nice to see that they are sending it out at least.

If you're nice, maybe you can get El Diablo to send you a few hundred issues of Today's Cacher

I thought that magazine was no more?!?

Well it's no longer being published, but as Brian pointed out, I still have plenty of copies of the two publications we made. Way too many copies!

Is Geocacher Magazine still being published?

I would really like to know if it is. My wife bought me a subscription after GW6 and I haven't seen a single copy. I have tried emailing them as has my wife, they're not very good at getting back with folks.

I've emailed them as well with no response. In July as I was purchasing my subscription and back issue they would answer my emails within hours, sometimes even checking with me to see if I'd gotten my back issue. Now I can't get an answer and I'm seeing red flags.

No one that I've talked to here has gotten the second issue (July-Aug).

Hopefully it comes soon, as my hubby and I loved the first issue.

[edit - confused, is there a magazine going out?] A geocache magazine is a cracking idea. I'm surprised that there isn't one out there (I read with interest that there was one - now de func).

I think it'll be a matter of time - smart publishers are looking for micro communities now where there's enough of a loyal existing fan based to create a revenue stream through publication. I'm no expert but looking at this forum... well.. like I say, I think it's only a matter of time.

A couple of comment made me chuckle in this thread - along the lines of "chea, why would we need a magazine when we've got a forum" - one simple answer - an editor. Someone who can sift through the durge and pick out the cream of the crop. Editorial content, readers letters, sponsored features, events, news etc. and expert views.. hardware reviews, geocache holidays - that sort of thing. Good copy, good photography.

Another answer would be that a magazine works all the time. You don't need a network connection, power, laptop etc. just a magazine.

It's a much bigger and more richly creative world that some of the "ooh look, another tupperware box under a tree" posters seem to be giving credit for.

I could think of loads of companies that'd like some ad space in there as well.. In fact, what the socks? why don't I get it going myself? who wants a comp?

Anyhoo - that's my thoughts.

i'd write for one if it had editorial oversight.

there are two kinds of publications (websites, concerts, awards shows...), really: there's the kind with some standards that people actually want to read, and there's the kind that's just a big sandbox where mostly people just want to see themselves in print.

I am rather proud of the articles we have published so far... some great geocachers have sent some wonderful stories, which have needed very little editing on my part.

Perhaps my standards are low, but so far every article has been something that I enjoyed reading.

I will be publishing another catsnfish story in the morning... great work and, according to the feedback, greatly appreciated by the readership. I am proud to play in that sandbox. I just got done after a week as a Red Cross Shelter Manager for 1468 Gustav evacuees in our Birmingham Civic Center followed by a week volunteering with the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief mobile kitchen feeding 12,000 meals per day in Galveston and Texas City for area victims and am tired, else I would publish it tonight... I just love these stories!

It doesn't have to be The Online Geocacher - I just hope that we get a popular geocaching magazine (or several) that entertains, educates and informs up and running... I don't care who does it or how it is run.

Some folks are enjoying The Online Geocacher, it appears, and I am glad. Not many are contributing content, and I don't know why. Maybe someone can get something going that more folks will contribute to, I hope so.

The door, however, is open for anyone to start one if they can do better; and if they can then I am 100% behind them!

I am using www.presspublisher.com to create The Online Geocacher because they offer a totally free publishing tool that anyone can use to publish most anything. It's quite a powerful and flexible tool for free. Because I believe in paying for services that I use I did buy a subscription to that tool, but I could just as well have kept on using it for free... the subscription only buys file uploads and more band-width, neither being things I particularly need at this time.

With cost not being an issue then I hope that anyone who can do better than I will please do so!

In the meantime, I am open to all submissions. :)

Did you file a claim with the BBB? It is amazing how many people are turning to the BBB due to products being sold through the forums that aren't being delivered.

No, I haven't. I called them though and complained. The guy I talked to said they were working hard on the magazine and was going to mail another issue soon. Soon has long since passed. My sister subscribed as well, but called them and got a refund.

As stated in this thread previously I wish Geocacher Magazine well.

I would love to see a well-done print magazine for our game and don't really care who does it.

As publisher of The Online Geocacher, a totally free web publication for geocachers to share their stories I do not compete with Geocacher Magazine, we do completely different things.

That said I will say that I do not understand the enmity built up by the management of Geocacher Magazine in this thread... if they had kept folks up to date there would likely be a much more accepting attitude towards their troubles.

I have not directly heard anything from them, in fact until I read the below email this afternoon I thought that they were out of business, however someone forwarded me this email from their publisher that I feel is sufficiently newsworthy, important and informative to share here... it may or may not make anyone feel better, but it's better than silence!

If nothing else it indicates that he's still trying, and that if you don't want to wait he'll issue a refund.

Thank you for your email.

I'm not surprised that the gc.com forums have you confused. The misinformation and false statements posted there, especially with regard to the magazine, seem to be so prevalent that we don't even monitor or check-in there anymore. But I suppose that's the nature of the beast concerning online forums & blogs.

I am happy to share with you the current status of the magazine;

We have had several challenges in this start-up including staff changes, cash-flow, and print deadlines and as a result we were not able to meet some of our original intended goals.

Every subscriber will receive AT LEAST the 6 issues they purchased with their subscription fee, but obviously not within the original 12 months originally anticipated.

The content is in place for the next two issues and I am currently restructuring the graphic staff, the InDesign and Illustrator specialists, etc ...

I can't at this moment give you and Iron-Clad publication date for these next issues but I am hopeful that it will be in the very near future.

I did not find your email address on the subscriber list so I assume you have not previously received this information. As for your other question about refunds, out of the entire subscriber base in all 50 states and 19 countries, six (6) have requested and received refunds.

Hope that clears thins up. Please feel free to contact me in the future with any additional questions or concerns.

Thanks for sharing that email.

We subscribed because of this thread and the forums and to see what would happen next. To read that they no longer check the thread or forums tells me that they no longer try to keep up with what is going on in the Geocaching community.

You can learn a lot here if you just skip anything about micros and/or by Vinny. :)

I'll expect the next issue to have an article about Geocaching on the AT and another about how great Nano containers are! ;)
