I almost don't want to admit this..

I think the reason these discussions can get so angsty is because one or both parties don't/won't realize they are opposite faces of the same coin and that the coin itself is just fine as it is.

I kinda like this with one small exception. One of the sides seems to hold to the belief that there's nothing about the coin that needs changing. The other side is of the belief that the coin can be improved.

The other challenge to finding the harmony that we will never experience is that we are all from completely different realities and I am not sure that this helps in some of these debates.

Look at the original post and if you can, imagine that there's something, anything, that could be improved about geocache hides somewhere in the world.

I looked at the original post, and I saw something even better: The Original Poster recognized that there are, in fact, some caches out there that he doesn't like. The Original Poster did not react to this revelation by calling for a ban on anything, nor did he badmouth the people who enjoy hiding and finding the types of caches he doesn't like. The Original Poster chose instead to accept that different people have different preferences, to learn from his experience, and, in the future, to do the homework required to better avoid the types of caches he prefers not to hunt:

... Unfortunately, while making my pocket query, in my "youthfulness" as a cacher I did not attempt to filter out micros. Having no idea that almost every single one of these hides was a micro, I didn't know any better. With literally 2,000 waypoints in my PQ, and no way to sort them, I was drowning in them ...

... I have no regrets, I learned what I enjoy and what I don't enjoy about this game. The numbers folks can have the micros, I suppose, I bear them no ill will. (And I highly recommend the Tri-Cities/Bristol/Abingdon, VA area for those folks, you'll be in heaven!) ...

... I'll value the customized filter on my Pocket Query builder from now on.

That's a beautiful attitude.

While I applaud anyone's efforts to increase the creativity, innovation and enjoyability of this hobby through example, I also applaud anyone who exhibits tolerance and acceptance of those whose entertainment preferences happen to be different from their own. It IS possible to do both -- improvement and tolerance are not mutually exclusive. Whether one is busy (1) finding great caches or (2) hiding caches that raise the greatness standard, one can always do so while simultaneously driving (or walking) right past all those "other" hides.

When I first read those quoted words from the Original Poster I hoped that some of the Chronic Complainers might read them as well, and that some of his goodwill might rub off on them. Call me a loony, but I still remain hopeful and optimistic.

One side says, "Your changes won't help, it's better the way it is than it would be if you mucked with it".

The other side says. "No really, our changes are good and things would be better than they are now,".

None of the proposed changes have actually been anything that would make things better.

None of the changers have left the site so how things are apparently is good enough.

Actually this was a point of contention last night. I can't believe that some people can't fathom that some people have moved on from caching because of YNWs. When you list up the most logical reasons that people would quit that would certainly one of them. Plus I know people that have admitted it to me (I didn't have a tape recorder so you are going to have to just believe me  ).

  4. Never target a specific cache or cacher in your criticisms. Generalize as much as possible.

Okay, so they've moved on. So what? Are we hurting for people so much that when people leave we have to find out why they're leaving and change the game to suit them?

If we eliminated LPCs in order to keep these people from leaving, or to bring them back, what about the people that enjoy numbers runs that would get upset about the lack of LPCs and leave? I know of dozens of people that would leave in this situation, but don't ask me to document them or give you any proof since that's not really required for claims like these. :o

And where, again, are the links to the discussion threads or other Internet documentation indicating the troubling number of Geocides-Due-To-Micros? Where, again, is the proof -- or evidence -- of the substantial damage to the game being caused by the types of caches that TrailGators prefers not to find?

The 'point of contention' the other night resulted when you attempted to repeat the claim that easy micros are harming the game. You said that good cachers were choosing to leave because of too many micros. As evidence you pointed to one person -- one! -- and we haven't even seen a name, nor any independent confirmation that he truly quit, and if so, WHY he quit.

Produce those details if you can, but even if you can, remember: one isolated incident does not constitute an epidemic.

Easy micros are causing substantial damage to the game? If this is true, I'm very interested to know about it. Please convince me.

Agree with all of the above. It is important to get over the complusion to find all caches and be willing to walk away/drive away/don't stop when you realize that the looking for the cache is just not what you will really enjoy doing.

Personally, I don't enjoy looking under newspaper racks or dumpsters, sifting through mulch, and high muggle, urban micros in general, so I just give those caches a pass (but I'm not saying ban them, as others have different tastes).

I wonder how many people have left the game out of frustration because of lost Travel Bugs? Or too many tough puzzle caches? Or whiny forum threads? Or ticks? Or the high price of GPS receivers? Or a bad experience with a badger? Or people who clutter up debate threads with Star Wars pictures when they run out of meaningful arguments?

Trailgators and Mushtang are right: We don't need to attract new people to the game who might enjoy it as it is; what we REALLY need to do is change the game so as to satisfy the gripes of all the disgruntled people who have left in a huff ...

... even if we just *think* we know why they left.

Is this thread dead, yet? Has everyone tired of having the same argument, yet again?

Is this discussion still going on? :o

I thought the OP's question had been answered by the third page. :o

I still fail to understand why those that feel 99% of all micro hides are lame don't just filter out micros.

If there are 200 micros in the area, and 2 are good, keeping the other 198 just to get to those 2 seems silly.

The only thing sillier would be to keep all 200 micros in your PQ and then complain in the forums about all the lame micros that you can't get away from. :o

You'd think, wouldn't you? :o

I was always humored by my PQ's when I lived in NC - there were 500 caches (the ones with logbooks - i.e. no events, virts, blah blah blah) within a 10 mile radius from my house, but when I pulled out the micro's and unknown's, and the hides from a few cachers I just wasn't feelin' the love for, my radius bumped me up to a whopping 65-ish miles.

BIG difference.

No huge hangups about this cache or that cache. I just have fun. If I am not having fun, I leave and go on with things in general or on to the next cache.

No llamas needed, though I did see some near a cache one time. They were funny.

Sorry, I still don't understand.

What do you mean by "Jedi cache hiders?" Are you a Jedi cache hider? What exactly IS a Jedi cache hider?

What do you mean by "I would like people to feel "'The Force'"? Do you mean you want to force people to abandon their own principles and start agreeing with you? Or do you mean you like to pretend that waving your hand Obi-Wan style will cause people to stop hiding and finding the types of caches that you don't happen to enjoy?

If you have a clear picture in your head about how Star Wars constitutes an analogy of your feelings toward easy micros, please provide a litttle more detail so the rest of us can see the analogy as clearly as you do.

Better yet, I would recommend that you sign up to become a padawan of Master Mtn-Man. He seems to have a pretty good grip on the Light Side of things -- he doesn't allow the mere existence of his least-preferred kinds of caches to bother him at all.

[Yoda voice] Let go of your negative feelings. Tell others what they should and should not enjoy, you do? A Jedi Cacher craves not these things. You must unlearn what you have learned. Frustration leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to whining in the forums. [/Yoda voice]

As you can see, my Jedi mind powers easily got me out of a sticky situation.

I believe this proves which side of the force on which my side of the fence rests.

The best part... look at that smile! Dude, you were having fun! Despite the threat of a particle weapon *and* a light saber, you've got a huge smile on your face.

Dude, how many times have you seen me when I wasn't smiling? :D

[Storm trooper radio voice]: Look sir! Nerds!

According to the Snoogstress, I don't make nerd money. I must be content with being merely a dork. She DOES give me credit for being a pretty cool dork though, so I got that goin' for me. :D

Star Wars captures the essence of my position.

Can you explain what you mean by that?

:D

Star Wars captures the essence of my position. Plus it was a fun way for me to explain it. I would like people to feel "The Force" and become Jedi cache hiders or at least try.... :D By the way, have you seen Chewbacca? :D

Sorry, I still don't understand.

Some people never will...

We already blew up the first Death Star! :D But I can see that the clones are still multiplying like crazy! Why do there have to be sooo many of those dadgum things? Man, I've never used the word "dadgum" until today. My usual word is dadgum. :D

You have a perfect analogy, but you are unable to explain it? :D

You over analyze things. Read what has been written. Use your imagination. It is all in fun! :D

I DID use my imagination and have fun. Didn't you see this?
