How do I get my P550 to talk to memory map 5?

How am I supposed to set up the GPS?

The help file says select NMEA 0183 but if I do it just thinks for a while then comes up with an error.

Life was so simple with the etrex... :D

Hi,

Start off by checking the GPS settings on the main control panel. Use COM4 for the program port, COM2/4800 for the hardware port and tick the 'manage automatically' box. These (apart from the tick box) should be the defaults IIRC.

In MM set the Manufacturer to MNEA, the model is greyed out but is NMEA 0183, port is COM4 and speed 4800.

If you're going to chuck it, chuck it this way as mine works quite well

Little tip I found for my Mio 550. I downloaded a freebie program called Switch from here. It puts a 'door' at the top of the screen and allows you to easily switch between running programs and also to close programs down. For example, Cachmate stays resident in memory when you close it, Switch lets you shut it down completely. Saves battery life quite considerably!

This might not be 100% relevant but if you run memory map and don’t quit it properly by selecting “exit”, then the GPS software/hardware may not work: perhaps Beeline has similarly hogged your resources. There is a patch or what have you that allows you to use several applications and one GPS receiver but I can’t remember what it is. I know nowt about Beeline though.

The GPSr port can only be used by one application at a time (normally the one that gets it first) unless you use one of the sortware designed to emulate a data port such as GPSGate or GPSMeter. However, these run in the background and will use power.

If you practice you will find that you may only need to use one application at once. For example, we use TomTom only for travelling to somewhere, not for caching, H reads MM and gives directions for caching and CacheMate is only used to look at the cache pages. Some want to use TomTom amd MM simultaneously but that requires something like GPSGate. If you shut down programs before moving on, either by using Exit in MM or shuting down in Settings/Memory/Running Applications, or using a program like Switch, you will not need to split you GPSr port.

Hope that makes sense. If you look on the Forums for P350/P550 discussions you will find lots of information on the unit and how to get it to work,

The plan was to use TomTom to get to parking location and then use MM to get to the cache.

We tried this the other night but Memory Map doesn't appear to give real time updates of the distance to cache location. This could just be the way I've got it set up.

In the end we resorted to the Etrex for the last 100m or so.

I read a thread yesterday where someone says he only uses MM and Beeline. I installed beeline and I'm well impressed! It seems to do every thing that the etrex does and more.

So, It would be nice to be able to flick between MM and Beeline.

I've downloaded the gpsmeter portsplitter and will give it a go when I get home....

Thanks to everyone for all the help

Don't forget when exiting MM you need to 'exit' from the menu and not tap on the X as you would with a PC.

TT probably won't work if you try to run it after 'false' exiting MM. Been there done that.

However, using the port splitter you should be able to run at least three applications, I've used TT MM and cache mate simultaneously on my PDA.

I forgot to say before... be persistent. Part of the "fun" is playing with it and when it all works to a level that you are happy with it is the best feeling you can get because you sorted it out for yourself. You can find all the answers you need, or ask, on here,

Well I love my P550.

I use Memory Map (Pocket Nav) and it's "Go To" function which gives me a directional arrow and distance to the cache. I now use this in preference to our Etrex.

I do use Tom Tom to get near to the site but this a separate unit.

Still persevere as it is a cracking Geocaching tool.

Windows Mobile 5 does allow applications to share the GPS port without any comport emulation.

I have had TomTom, MemoryMap and Cachemate all sharing the GPSr without GPSgate.

IIRC The problem is that both MemoryMap and Cachmate can not open this virtual comm port that Windows Mobile creates and you have to fire up TomTom first.

It may be true about multiple applications but all I can say is that, whichever order they are run in, TomTom and MM cannot use the GPSr simultaneously on a P550 without GPSgate or similar,

They can. I have had them both running without the need of gpsgate or similar.

I will admit it was a pain to setup but it did work. :D

Me too - and you can have them both running at the same time with mm showing and directions given by tomtom, although mm tends to lag behind a bit.

Cheers. I knew I wasn't making it up

Sorry I forgot something. You cannot run them both simultaneously on the GPSr hardware port (normally COM2 I believe) but you can run both together on the emulated port which is equivalent to one created by a port splitter. However, checking back, it appears TomTom does not seem to find the location unless MM is running. I think that was just a software issue and it may be our version of TT. I have a feeling that both did not run as smoothly either but I have not tried recently.

Having tried all these things we just left it as simple as possible and, as I said previously, we have never had a need to run both TT and MM at the same time. Good if you are caching on your own maybe but I like to direct C!
