FTF Certificate?

Hello,

I'm still learning about Geocaching. The first person to find ours was asking if we could send them a FTF Certificate. Where would I find one, fill out and how to send it?

Thanks

Arnie

Sorry I asked. I’ll try and find a forum with more intelligent replies!

-//-It's not a requirement for you to send or create a certificate or even give anything for the first to find.

so true!

tell them to take a snapshot of the online log or the logbook, print it, frame it in a big spikey wooden frame and insert it where ... uhm, yeah. :)

DONT TELL THEM the colored part... not worth the flame.

I've never heard of anything like that. There's really no "rules" regarding FTFs, so you're really free to do what you want. It looks like they are a new caching family with kids, and the kids would probably enjoy having a certificate on their wall. In the spirit of good relations, I'd probably make them something nice...but now the trick of figuring out how to get it to them...

The answers you got were not a reflection of you. As a newbie it is reasonable to ask for help if someone has asked for some recognition that they were FTF. There are several ways some cache owners will recognize the FTF on their cache. Some simply add text to the cache description to recognize the First to Find. You got several responses with resources for printing certificates if you choose to do that.

The answers were the reaction to the person who found your cache asking for anything. There is no requirement for a FTF prize, certificate, or recognition on the the cache page. FTF'ers should not expect anything from the cache owner. Those that do are likely to get ridiculed in the forums.

The cacher who asked for the certificate is relatively new. Maybe they were FTF on another cache and the owner had put a certificate in the cache and think that all caches have one. Their log sounded like they were almost unsure if they were FTF because they couldn't find the certificate.

If the OP would rather not create a certificate, they could just explain that not all caches have something for the FTF.

Or you can be like me, and do nothing. Except now I'm going to use D@niam@l's certificate. Thanks, pal. :)

Yes, I agree totally, a reaction to the rude FTF'er. I hope you're still reading this. Asking you for a certificate is beyond obnoxious. Although I did once hear a guy in my area was emailing people, and asking people to recognize his "accomplishment" with text on the cache page.

First of all i did not demand a FTF! I asked if they could maybe send one in the email. In our area Pretty much all the caches have FTFs. But I see by the edit even the host saw what a bunch of morons have to say. And as to the one or two decent replys yes my kids think they are like trophys and look forward to opening a new cach and finding one as they are really getting into this new hobbie. Hopefully they never have to come across people like the ones in here that have nothing better to do besides wait for someone to ask a question and show their IQ levels in a public forum. As for the people that tried to help the poster I tip my hat and say thanks.

Have a sense of entitlement, do we? It's just a piece of tupperware in the woods. Is that park open to the public at 11:00 PM? Probably not. :)

"Welcome to the hobby...no stupid questions allowed!"

Such a shame!

You know what I always say. This is what happens when an aspect of a non-competitive game becomes competitive. And I see it's become the subject of a new thread created by Kit Fox. Not this again, I think it's been shown repeatedly this is a highly moderated forum, in the grand scheme of the internet. You can't even type the word d-a-m-n without the software changing it to "dadgum". This is child's play. The forum software, however didn't stop Yodazuk from calling the majority of the posters to this thread MORON'S. Something I sure didn't do, all I did was express an opinion.

Ask intelligent questions and your ratio of intelligent answers will probably go up significantly.

Actually, I don't think your question was necessarily the problem as much as the idiotic request from a finder for you to send them a FTF certificate. The chicken scratch reply was a light hearted way of letting you know how ridiculous that request was.

lately trying to post here without someone taking offence requires more agility then navigating thru a mine field.

cheez...

i also frequent a biker forum, visited mostly by brits and scots. if you dont have a good sense of humor when posting there you get a heartattack on day one. homurous pokes all the time. nothing personal just banter.

other forum when people shout "YOU SUCK" when you are showing something absolutely cool or is the envy of the poster. all in good fun.

but both forums are visited by adults, not pampered children used to being "acknowledged" and pampered that get upset at the slightest hint of not being 100% positive, supported and agreed with.

FTF certificates are something that must be rather unique to your area, if it is really true that most caches have them. I don't have a lot of FTFs to my name, but I do have a few, and I've never seen one, nor have I ever heard of such a thing, except for once, here, when someone posted that they were putting one in their cache, and got lots of "oooh, that's a good idea!" replies, as I recall.

Every area seems to have certain hiders that tend to influence the other hiders in that region. You probably have one in your area that started putting out FTF certificates, and others apparently followed the lead. But that aside, there really is no such thing (in the official geocaching sense) of FTF, therefore no such thing (in the same sense) as an FTF certificate.

Don´t bother about most of the answers.

Be sure it´s not neccessary to have a FTF Certificate in your Cache or to create a certificate for the finder.

I´ve heard this for the very first time.

I thought myself and D@nim@l killed this thread. I agree though, seeing FTF certificates seems pretty rare. Not just in my area, but in other areas in my "region" as well. But there are certainly many monkey-see, monkey-do, type traditions in many areas.

I've only ever seen one FTF certificate, but it was in a cache placed by a member of the Manitoba Geocachers Association (sorry if I have the name wrong), so they may be quite common in Manitoba, and it wouldn't be unreasonable for a new cacher to wonder where the certificate was if they didn't find one. Like most of us, they probably don't have a lot of FTFs, and didn't know what to expect. I'm a bit embarassed by some of the responses to what was a good question. Usually geocachers and forum posters are polite and helpful, but occasionally Off Topic behaviour migrates over to the serious side of the forums. So welcome to the forums to both the OP and the FTF, and please don't give up on us. I've learned a LOT about geocaching from the forums, and been entertained too, and I think you'll find most people very helpful if you have further questions. And good for you for sticking up for yourselves and blasting those that needed it!

Excuse me? Blasting those that needed it? The FTF called people "moron's" (in violation of forum guidelines), and the OP sent a cowardly email (being sure to hide their email address) calling one of the posters to this thread names, and calling into doubt how their parents raised them. This is a violation of the geocaching.com terms of use.

Since when does a little constructive criticism (and done in a humorous manner, but taken the wrong way) call for "blasting those who needed it". Since when does "blasting those who needed it" call for violating the websites terms of use? Absurd. A couple of people in Manitoba need to grow up, and get a thicker skin (which they wouldn't have even needed if they hadn't flown off the handle without thinking in the first place).

You know the old saying, no?

"Don't take life too seriously, you'll never make it out alive."

The same could be said about how competitive and crazy people get with this game. It's a GAME. GAME. GAME.

If you got the FTF, be happy you got the fresh log book.

If there isn't a certificate and you want one, why can't you do one yourself? Why does the owner of the cache have to find one and e-mail it to you? Cut out the middle man and do it yourself.

The responses to people who answered, honestly and, well, with humor as well, get blasted because what -- they didn't say "OH MY SEND THEM ONE?"

Seriously... it's a game. Smile when you cache. If you're the first to find a cache, let out a "WOOT!" and do the chicken dance. If you're with friends and family, I assure you that memory will last a lot longer than a FTF certificate. Especially if someone takes a photo or video!
