I'm headed to San Diego for a week! YAY!

I'm in training at the Miramar NAS the week of 11/16 to 11/21 or 22. Probably staying at the Holiday Inn North Miramar.

I plan to do some caching along the coast when I arrive on the 16th, but I'm looking for suggestions on any MUST DO caches around the SD airport, Miramar, and La Jolla/the coast in particular, but I'm also going to try to hit the Podcacher Treasure Cache in Escondido as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'll only have time to cache in the evening during the week depending on the course load, so I'm looking for fairly easy, but noteworthy caches that don't take a lot of time to complete. I plan to drop a bunch of my smashed coins in caches before I leave town.

With it being so close to Turkey Day, I figured there might be an event posted sometime around the time I'll be out there, but I don't see any posted yet. Anyone know of any events on the drawing board the week of 11/16 to 11/21 or 22? I always like to meet the natives if there's time. I see my old buddy Lowracer is in the neighborhood..... :P

Thanks in advance! B)

Not sure how I beat Trailgators to posting this but here is the bookmark list for San Diego's Consensus Favorites. Basically, it's a list of those caches that made it onto at least three of the locals "Favorites" bookmark lists (of which there are several.) Most of the locals favorites lists can be found associated with this cache: Forbidden Forest And, as it happens, that cache is not far from the base formerly known as NAS Miramar (the Marines have taken it over so now it is MCAS Miramar...) and since it's a night cache it won't interfere with your training (right?). You can usually find a few worthies who'll tag along for the fun...

Speaking of night caches and of Lowracer, he's just placed another nearby night cache recently. I still have to go do that one...

We have a big event on the 2nd, a Flash Mob on the 8th and the Annual CITO/Campout out in the desert also on the 8th, so it may be that we'll be "evented out". Then again, you never know what may pop up.

Thanks for the links. They were helpful. B)

I'd really like to do Forbidden Forest, but probably not alone. Maybe with Mark (Lowracer) or TG, or you, or anyone that wants to will come along with me. I don't think I saw a find for Mark on that cache either. :P Maybe we could do Lowracer's new night cache after that if there's time. I did 3 night caches with a group in Beaumont one night and it was a blast. I think I was the only one that didn't wake up with PI the next day.

I've done a couple of Lowracer's caches in Austin. They were really fun. I saw he did another Sneaks Up On You cache out there. Looking at the location, I don't know if I'll make time for it though. I've been meaning to do a copycat of the one I did a few years back, but I never got around to it.

Check out Black's Beach, near Torrey Pines. You may catch a full moon, or two. :P

Why would you possibly tell Snoog about a nude beach? Don't you know he doesn't need any help getting into trouble? Besides do you really want to see all that he has to offer? :(

Who? Me? Trouble? :(

Nnnaaaaaaaa! :(B):lol::(:huh:

You got the wrong guy mate. To quote David Lee Roth, "Big bad Bill is sweeeet William nowwww." :P

Questions: How come there are almost NO caches across the

border in TJ?

Is TJ that dangerous?

Something like fifteen or twenty murders in the past three weeks.

Bodies in heaps, the drug cartels are rearranging themselves it

seems. Poor dears, our dreadful economy has cut into their take.

O yeah, lively prison riots with multiple shootings and tourists being

stripped of their money and belongings on a semi-regular basis. Just

ask Splashman and Splashette about their recent experiences.

At least it isn't boring.

The murders are drug cartel related. The kidnappings are of rich CEO's and/or their family members. If you're not one of these groups, you'll be okay.

Aww James, you beat me to the punch!

Hopefully things work out so I can meet you Snoogans! There are a lot of great caches on the SD Favs list. Besides Forbidden Forest, one that an out of towner may want to hit at sunset is Coastal Hike in La Jolla. It is an easy hike along a very cool stretch of the coast that will have you clicking many cool photos. If you did opt to do that one, I would recommend also stopping by Greta Garbo's Phone, which is also in La Jolla. The Kiss of Midnight is another fun night cache in that general area. You could hit the Karl Strauss Brewery for dinner, while you at the first stage of that one! Anyhow, these fun caches are all listed the the SD Favs, so that will save you some time. If you have some type in particular that you would prefer then I'm sure we could help recommend others as well. I'm sure that there ar many other caches on 3 or more people's favorite lists that I'm not aware of, that should be on that list. It's hard to keep up with the thousands of caches in the area.

It actually crossed my mind to throw one, but I have no idea how demanding this instructor level course I'm attending will be on my free time. If I have to spend a lot of time in preparation to show proficiency in the lessons, I may only have an hour or three at best to myself on any given day. I don't want to disappoint folks if I post an event and then I can't show. Plus, SD is wayyy outta my comfort zone to host an event.

We call our impromptu (non-smiley) get togethers "No Smiley, Just Smiles Events" and I will probably try to organize one for the night that I have enough time to do Forbidden Forest if anyone's interested. Does SD have a local forum other than on GC.com? That would probably be better to organize on short notice.

I padded the schedule to get into town very early on Sunday (like wayyy before check-in time at my hotel) so I can spend some time playing in tide pools around La Jolla and do a little cachin'.

I also asked for an afternoon/evening flight out on 11/22, but I don't think I wanna go down to TJ with that extra time now. So, I'll probably cache my way down the coast and around the airport until I have to turn my car in.

Yes we do. Our SD caching events thread was made just for this purpose.

Okay. That explains why my google search for an independantly hosted SD forum came up with nothing. I figured maybe you guys utilized a section of the SoCal website but I didn't bother to check after my search came up with mostly GC threads and one picture hosting site.

I'm thinkin' that Sunday or Monday (11/16-11/17) would be the best time to do a night cache group hunt. The demand on my time for training isn't going to be that bad in the first day or so. This isn't my first rodeo. However, as the course moves along my time will probably become more limited until it's over on Friday afternoon (11/21) and then I'm free until I have to turn in my rental car on Saturday. (11/22)

Are you down with doing Forbidden Forest (again) on any of those days? I still haven't heard back from Lowracer, but anyone would be welcome to join me. The more the merrier for a night cache.

BTW about how much time does FF normally take to complete so I can figure out how to budget my time? If I don't knock it out on Sunday or Monday, I for sure want to do it on Friday.

How does one dress in SD in November? Does it get cold at night?

I might go down and watch you do FF. It should only take you an hour or so. If you cry "Uncle!" then maybe less. The temps are very nice in November. It should be mid 70s for the highs and mid 50s for the lows. A sweat jacket should all that you need. Edited by TrailGators

Okay, my trip is set in stone. My schedule is cleared, the flight, hotel, car, and class have all been booked.

Who wants to do the night cache(s) as soon as it gets dark on Sunday, 11/16.....? Or, I could wait until Friday, 11/21 if that works better......??? :D (Sunday night has to end early. I don't wanna be late for class on Monday.)

Those are the only 2 nights I'm sure to be free.....

I would consider hosting an event on (11/21) if I had good coords to a spot you guys hang out at near Miramar. I'm staying at the Holiday Inn North-Miramar.....

The 21st looks better for me but I'll have to check with the boss. There are a couple of Irish pubs in that general area that we could stop for a beer.

It hasn't been approved yet, but it's within the 14 day limit. :P

Event ARCHIVED!

Very sorry to disappoint. I'm not coming to town after all. My class was cancelled and moved to Asheville, North Carolina, in January of next year. DOH!

Dang, I was really lookin' forward to cachin' SD and dippin' my toes in the Pacific.

If anyone wants to adopt the listing contact me ASAP. No later than sunday. I'll request it to be unarchived and mail you a small bag of my pennies to hand out at the event.
