Geocaching Member Statistics

Hello,

I am a student at the University of South Carolina and doing a thesis on Geocaching for my masters degree. I am looking to know how many members use the Geocaching website, which is a number I have not been able to find anywhere.

The forums show 408,000 registered users, but I'm not sure if this is the total user base of Geocaching.com. I have a ton of other statistics that many other websites have, but this is the one number that seems to escape me.

If anyone has this number, I would be most appreciative (maybe even like active monthly users, AND total registered users).

Also, if anyone has any leads to good analysis on Geocaching as a academic study (like a Gartner/Jupiter research article) I would also appreciate that as well!

Thank you,

Alan Cooper

Even if we did make that kind of information public, we have no way of knowing exactly how many people play the game. Many times a single username serves an entire family. So how do we count them?

I think it is safe to say there are over a million geocachers worldwide.

Look at the bottom of the main page, www.geocaching.com. That's pretty much all the stats that they make public.

There are 725,037 active caches worldwide. In the last 7 days, there have been 411,013 new logs written by 56,216 account holders. Check out the recent logs or photos.

Yeah, I guess I was looking for more "total size of casual or active geocachers worldwide", and the demographics. Mostly males? Females? Families? Age? Income? Education level?

It's okay if the information isn't available, but if anyone had something that made that handy for me to get, that's what I was looking for. Otherwise I'll have to figure out how to make a study to get that information. Sigh. School sucks

You're familiar with the registration process, since you had to have an account in order to post here. That's the extent of the info they have, and they don't make it public.

I was able to find some information here:

http://www.quantcast.com/geocaching.com

54% male

92% white

70% have NO kids

44% college educated

800K unique per month (331K US based)

82% of uniques contact from home, 20% from business locations

Good stuff!

I've found quantcast's estimations to be wildly inaccurate. They seem to be heavily biased to what "marketing america" deems to be the ideal customer.

As a side note, I noticed a couple weeks ago that there were quantcast tracking tags on a lot of the GC pages now. I'll leave it as an exercise for others to think about why this would be but every scenario I can think of may be good for Jeremy and his buds ($$$) but not good for users.

Before you utilize quantcast's data, I would look at how they came up with those numbers. I know myself and several people that are hanging at my house right now have never filled out any sort of questionnaire. Nor can I think of anyplace online where I've answered anything about the number of kids I have or my edumacation. Remember, 68.9% of statistics are made up on the spot. And 72.7% of all master's thesis are based on incorrect assumptions, so I'm sure you don't care.

Great. Another way to track us.

This is a simple hobby. I don't need folks gathering information about me so they can market whatever piece of crap that is the next whiz-bang gadget designed to separate us from our money, thank you.

Good to know about that site. Cookies are now blocked.
