Disappearing threads

I started a topic in this forum the other day and there were a couple of (non-controversial) replies to it. Then it suddenly disappeared. I looked all over for it. I even checked some of the other forums to see if it had been moved.

So I posted a new topic asking why it had been removed. In the time it took to post the message, the thread in question magically reappeared. There were no new messages in it. Very strange...

Does this have anything to do with "moderated members" posting to a thread? If someone who has been naughty posts to a thread does the whole thread now get sidelined until an admin approves it? icon_eek.gif

Gorak, I've experienced this infopop board being slow to open threads this morning. It's also locked up when hitting the "reply" button' displaying "Please Wait. Your request is being processed..." for minutes on end.

Then it would time out when hitting "Post Now" without a confirmation that the reply was posted. Despite that, it was posted.

I was also a little naughty this morning, so that may be a factor. icon_wink.gif

Actually, I experienced this phenomenon yesterday afternoon. I did learn afterward that a "moderated member" had posted to the topic around the same time as the disappearance.

But it does explain my double post on this topic. icon_smile.gif

To answer your question, a topic does not disappear when a moderated member posts to it. Only the moderated members posts go to the moderation queue.

I cannot say why your topic is disappearing then reappearing, but as Erik said it does sound like an infopop issue. I will point it out to Elias.

Recently I was cleaning up a thread in the General forum by deleting a number of duplicate posts. I experienced some delays and error messages in trying to get the duplicates to go away. After awhile, I gave up and went back to the page that lists all the topics in the General Forum. It said "There are no topics in this forum." "Yikes!" I said to myself... "Self, you've done something terribly wrong and deleted the entire General Forum!" After that:

1. I changed my shorts.

2. I thought as how deleting the entire General Forum might not necessarily be a bad thing.

3. I refreshed my screen and the forum magically reappeared.

You've undoubtedly noticed the forums performing slowly recently. The Infopop server we're on is pretty much at capacity and I'm working with them to resolve the issue.

Ubb.x does a lot of caching to improve performance and reduce database queries. I believe what is happening here is that when a topic is updated, it gets removed from cache and has to be rebuilt and then added back into the cache. Due the servers being so overloaded, this can take some time to complete and while this is happening, the topic has essentially disappeared.

I can't say for certain this is exactly what is happening, but these kinds of odd problems are a side-affect of our server being at capacity.

Sounds like a plausible explanation. Sorry to hear you ruined a pair of shorts, Keystone. I can relate, I've had similar experiences with client data.

Please allow me to offer a bit of my expertise here as some one who has had his member moderated.

I can say with certainty that when I posted to a forum topic while being moderated, that the specific topic would jump to the top of the list and would remain there until another topic was replied to. At that point, the topic that I attempted to post to would disappear. It seemed to me that the topic would reappear once the decision was made to allow my post or not.

Well I can say with absolute certainty that topics disappearing have nothing to do with messages waiting in the moderation queue for that topic.
