It looks like geocaching.com is due for a lot more visitors and recognition. Apparently 20th Century Fox has started hiding caches and has created a web page (with links to/from geocaching.com) to promote one of their soon-to-be-released movies. Hope they put some really good stuff in the caches.

OK Bob;

Let the cat out of the bag and give us no details. How did you find out? Where did you dig this info up from, what are your sources?

Project APE told me they were going to place proof of alternative evolution internationally as well, though they didn't tell me where. I'm as much in the dark as you are.

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

I hope they plan on placing one in the Portland vicinity. After all this is the birthplace of Geocaching. Regardless, it looks like it will be fun for all whether we can only read about others APE adventures or if we are lucky enough to actually participate.

Well, I do know a LITTLE about it as I was #1 at the cache scene today (5/25) but #2 to find it. For full details, see the cache site here in Northern California. Just type in a zip code like 95219 and it will pop up (or see the urls below)

Buxley and his friend Julie were the first ones to find it. Buxley is the fellow who has Buxley's Maps that we all enjoy.

It will be interesting to see where the next mission for the Planet of the Apes will pop-up.

Happy caching....Ron

I can't confirm this, but I believe the locations will be restocked randomly to thwart the authorities. I'll see if I can get more information on this.

n prop from the Planet of the Apes movie didn't seem like a fair trade, but I didn't hesitate to make the swap. =)

After snapping pictures of one another and entering log entries, we spotted a number of camouflaged HumVees heading toward us. Obviously, there are some powerful entities that don't want these caches found! We split up and managed to make our escape.

All in all, a wonderful caching adventure! Thanks to Jeremy, Fox, and the others who put this together. I had a blast!

Cache on!

Renner's post of May 25 is blank and may be an indicator that the APE authorities broke in and spirited him away in mid-post.

That's the 2001 version of the WWII movies that showed the morse code transmission of the French resistance suddenly interrupted by the Axis.

Those APES are rough !

I just drove by the Primate Research Center off 185th in Beaverton (OR) (where they first cloned monkeys) and there is quite a bit of activity going on with lots of military vehicles present. They seem to be gearing up for something big...

Well, one thing seems certain about this mystery. They're unlikely to hide any of these movie promotion caches here in Kansas City.

Hmm. . . I've been noticing on the highway some black vans with multiple antennae. Originally I thought they were part of a government plot to control the weather. . . oh how wrong I was.

Please o please o please o please bring one to Cincinnati!

I have read everything about this cache, but nowhere can I find when they release the coords. I see "Every Friday" but it looks like the last ones were released Saturday?? Can any one say WHEN the coords are going to be released??

The cache page for the cache says it was hidden on Thursday, May 24. I got the general e-mail update on Friday that first hinted about Project APE, and saw the actual cache page later that morning.

I assume you'll have to keep a close eye on the site this Thursday and Friday.

Going A.P.E. !

On Tuesday the 29th I was interviewed by USA Today about Mission #1.

The story appears in the Wednesday the 30th issue in the Life/Section D of the paper on page 3d. The headline is "Net treasure hunt has fans going ape."

Most of the article is of course about the movie, but there are a couple of notations about geocaching as a sport.

For those wondering why Buxley's name isn't mentioned as the 1st finder, the reporter told me they couldn't use his name because they couldn't get ahold of him for verification....some journalism guideline I guess. Sorry Buxley !

Stay tuned fans...There is another USA Today geocaching connection coming up !

regards....Ron

I first noticed the Devil's Spoon cache (Project A.P.E. cache #1) listed on Friday morning and was the first to find it around 1 p.m. or so that same day. I assume cache #2 will be announced this coming Friday morning (and will last about as long! =)

Any guesses where #2 will be? I'm guessing east coast, but that's just a guess...

Please keep in mind that you were a captive of the A.P.E. forces and they MIGHT have brainwashed you.

In fact I wonder if you aren't a double agent trying to lead geocachers astray !

How do we know we can trust you !?

Arrrghhh...it's very close to my Sauvie Island cache and they decided to place it there (or post it) the day after I flew to visit family in Viginia! Of allthe rotten luck! No doubt it will have been visited before I return, but I'll still check out the cache when I get back. *sigh*

Those big apes don't stand a chance the way the geocachers hop on the evidence before the cache has even cooled off ! Looks like it was found 3 times in the first few hours it was known to be there.

Dave Ulmer....you're the man !

Look out apes !

Yep...you're the man...

The man who started it all...

The man who got to Mission #2 first...

The man who won't tell us about it....

After looking at Dave's post on Mission #2, I guess the only thing to do is wait for 20th Century Fox's new movie "How I found Mission #2 by Dave Ulmer".

Maybe they'll run it before or after the Planet Of The Apes movie at a theater near you.

Also, guess that advertising budget still isn't enough to allow for some 20th Century Fox trinkets in addition to the prop prize.

Oh well.....people will still go ape to find Mission #3...I know I would, but glad I had my shot at #1 !

Ron

OOps, my log entry for finding A.P.E. #2 first was censored... then deleted...

Guess that is the way it goes in a Totalatarian institution..

That's right. You aren't on the discussion email list, so I'll post it here.

I modified your post a few minutes ago because I considered it bad sportsmanship to vent frustrations on the log pages. The cache page is not a place to post your political views.

For everyone else - I mention Dave Ulmer at every possible opportunity with reporters, as well as give Mike Teague credit for a great job. However as long as the site has existed I haven't had more than one email passed between Dave Ulmer and me, nor has he contributed in any way to the sport, in the forums, placing caches, whatever. To consider all the work I've done to work on the sport, I feel like I was punched in the stomach for no reason.

Obviously there seems to be some jealousy about the sport's popularity and growth. Although Dave Ulmer came up with the initial idea last May, the Geocaching community at large has turned it into a totally different animal, and that was done by the participating members of Geocaching (not the GPS Stash Hunt, or whatever other name it has), and the work I have done on the web site. Dave Ulmer, unless someone can contest this, has not even placed as much as another cache in the last 9 months, nor answered a question from a new user in the forums. People like Mike Teague, however, have continued on and helped steer the Geocaching sport in the right direction.

That does not belittle the fact that his idea was the first on placing what are now caches, or geocaches. I thank him for allowing me to take advantage of my development talents and design work to create a site to foster and build a site that has become as popular as it is today.

So Dave can be happy in the fact that he was the first in finding something that had been achieved by the work and dedication of the geocaching community at large, and go to inventing new ideas that he may some day have a passion to build and foster a community with.

If that's true, glad I was #2 on #1.

But then again, maybe it's the people who are finding the caches, not necessarily when they find them.

Mission #3 might prove or disprove the theory.

I admit that I hadn't gotten into this Planet of the Apes role-playing before. Now that I know it isn't role-playing anymore and that the monkeys really are in charge, it's much more interesting. Fight on! ;-)
