has anyone noticed all the action in utah. new stashes, this is cool. the game is growing here and i like it. i had and opportunity to visit my first urban stash today (lib & edub's faultline). when finding this one, you end up standing on the opposite side of a big sign, there were many onlookers. i'm sure that from their side of the sign, they thought we were relieving ourselves. i hope this one doesn't disappear, it will be fun for a lot of stash seekers.

Wow! Five this month and it's only the 11th!

Thank you, Brian Taylor, Wayne Bickley, and Lib O'Reilly.

(Thanks, too, to Larry for making the first ever stash in Utah.)

Even dozen. Who's going to take a chance and be number 13?

ro,

thirteen.....makes you go hmmmm. i've got one ready for a home, but judging from the way things have picked up lately i'm not sure i could be #13 if i placed it tonight. besides, we really need a themed cache for #13. something dark, and a little mysterious or superstitious. perhaps "under a ladder" somewhere.

larry

after i posted this, i checked the utah stashes....there are 15 as of today. a day late and a dollar short, again. i'll save this idea for my thirteenth!

ro,

do you have one that shows utah stashes? i'm very much interested. i bet it is becoming a full time job, given all this activity. i don't know how jeremy keeps up with geocaching.com. on that note, a state map showing all stashes in the state would a nice feature on geocaching.com, i was waiting around to see if jeremy would be adding something like this with further improvements to the site. but this idea seems to border on the reason for some bickering (and i'm very tired of hearing it). if it is something that jeremy doesn't want to take on....so be it. if you are working on a project that you maintain based on info you obtain from geocaching.com, thats great.

The hot-springs URL was given as an example of what I was trying to do. The idea is a map with links to further information (in the hot springs case, to stuff on my site; in the cache map, to the appropriate page on geocaching.com).

Hard part is making the map, and every new cache added seems to require re-doing the whole thing. Hot springs are fairly permanent but caches come and go. I'm begining to think that this just isn't going to work. What I may wind up doing is just a map showing my caches, with links to geocaching.com.

But if I do decide to go ahead, I'll check with Jeremy before I do. That's just being polite.

I haven't had time to peruse the discussion lists lately, so I'm a bit late on this...

I'm planning on adding state mapping to the site, but I'm looking for a ways to automate it. The programs that do it are a little over my price range at the moment, but I hope to have something resolved within the next month.

In the meantime, if you know of a progam that's cheap (and I missed out there on the net), please let me know. It can be either Linux or NT based.

jeremy,

thanks for keeping this idea in the back of your mind. i think it would be a nice feature, too bad there isn't a way to do it for free. the captian sent me a copy of his state map, it looks great, but sounds like a lot of work. it's really nice to be able to see all the regional caches at once. since it is so tedious to maintain, it think it's another good reason to keep it on goecaching.com, fully automated, and linked to the current cache database.

We're just booming. Eighteen right now and that's BEFORE the weekend. When the weather improves, it's Katy bar the door.

Little contest: how many caches will we have in Utah on the 24th of July? I'll bet at least 100.

Needless to say, I can't keep my map up to date manually -- too many additions in too little time.

Not that I'm complaining! I've got to get out there and plant and find.

I would have to guess that everyone say the same CNN newscast that i did about Geocaching.

It has been a while that I have been as excited about as I am now. This sport (game, adventure) combines so many things together in one. I think my wife is even more excited than I am.

I am new to the state and this is showing me what this state has to offer. I have logged a few finds, along with a few misses, but I have been having a blast. I have, what i consider to be a great cache but dont know the state well enough to place it. I am a avid Jeeper so I am sure it will not be long untill I have located someplace.

On a side note: How does everyone feel about having a little get together. I was thinking about having a little shindig at my place, or maybe in the late spring do a little some thing in the form of a camping trip. Of course the directions would only be in the form of Lat, Long. I have seen a few people around on other boards that say part of the fun is never meeting any other geocachers. Let me know!!!

Does anyone live near Moab? Or would any of you who dont, be willing to drive south to find a cache. I have a Jeep, and I am going to Moab soon and I am thinking about placing cahce down there. I know that for most it would be hard to get to with out a Jeep or serious 4x4. Let me know!!!

moab?! ive seen photos, in fact one of my buddies from work went out on a jeep safari over president's day weekend. the photos scared me. i have a 4x4 truck, it's still too new to take on most serious trails (year 2000) and i would probably cry if i scratched it. it does look like a lot of fun, just a little too extreme for me.

s places for caches, not to mention the scenery is incredible. There are plenty of real rough 4X4 trails, but lots of easier ones as well. Its worth it to go down there just for the redrock lanscape.

glad to hear from you dorgill, it's cool to see more and more locals joining in. i hope the weather holds out for us this weekend, i've got plans to get out and place another one this weekend also. i'm looking froward to finding your stash after you get it placed.

I will try and place on e in Moab soon. I will make its content so awesome, that everyone will buy a 4x4 just so they can get to it....

On another note, did you see that AZ is trying to out do us? Nothing beats a little friendly challenge. They have 46 and we have 29. If everyone were to try and place a cache this weekend (the weather is suppose t be great) Ill bet we could pass them. They have a bit of an advantage, in that they do not have to deal with adverse weather. But I am sure that they will slow down on the summer. I will be down there in late march, so i am going to check out a few of their caches.

In the spirit of the game.... CHARGE!!!!!

Haaa Ha ! Weee're aheaaad of yoooou !

It's undoubtly the weather, I wouldn't want to go out in 0 deg and 25 mph wind to hide or seek a cache, then again, I won't want to do that when it's 120 degrees down here.

I've been here 12 years and have never made it to Moab. What a great reason to go. I'll look forward to your stash.

Until then, AZ rules... Ha !

Let the games begin...

Finally got out and placed my first cache. And searched out 2 as well. We had a great day out in the desert. Late in the day I thought we would attempt to reach RO Despains N 40 W 113 (degree confluence) cache. The map showed a jeep trail near the cache. Should have believed RO's description (4 mile hike), 'cause that road doesnt exist. It was late in the day, too late for an 8 mile hike, so that is one for another day. By the way RO, did you post your visit on the Degree Confluence site?

Dorgill, I must have just missed you me. I was out in that area from about 10:00 till 3:30. I was driving a yellow jeep, cant miss it. I saw a few people out there, but as you may have seen I ran into a few problems while on this visit so I never made it to the cache location. I am glad so many people placed new caches this weekend. I had one ready, but after my many problems, I decided I had better wait untill my luck improved!! Next weekend.

hey guys,

i found the n40w113 yesterday! i'm surprised i didn't see either one of you out there. i was driving a 4 door 4x4 ford truck, white. we need a secret, little orphan annie, hand signal that fellow geocachers will recognize when we pass each other on those desolate roads! i managed to get within 2 miles of the stash before i had to go on foot. the road begins at the riverbed station area. next time you can recognize me because i will nearly run you off the road because i have my eyes on my gps receiever!

Actually I was out there on Saturday. I found the same road you took it sounds like. It turns off at the old riverbed station, passes through a few gates. It was real muddy but we drove to within about 2 miles of the cache. The sun was about to set though so it was to late in the day to set out on foot. I'll get it next time though.

Also starting next weekend I will have an external GPS antenna protruding ou the top of my spare tire rack.

Krepism,

How are you making these stickers ? I'd like a couple to stick on the ammo cans I've been using as cache boxes.

But could you make mine say "AZ GeoCachers Rule" ? :0)

Seriously, I'd like a couple of those if your selling them. even if you're giving them away, Ha !

GeoCache logo (from the web site) printed it out and trimmed it to fit. I am testing it to see if the laser toner can adhear to the paper well enough to hold up to the elements. So far so good. I have one on the back of my Jeep, and it has been washed many times, snow and rain. None has made any difference to the sticker. I would not advise this been done with a cheap laser printer or ink jet. I have access to very high end printing equipment. What I am thinking about doing is to print up items for different states and send them to who ever wants them, and all I will ask in return is that people make a donation to the Jeremy for mantinace on the web site. I will eat the cost for manufacturing and postage. This of course will only be done with the permission of Jeremy. But I still need to make sure that the sticker will hold up and sure it is a worth while investment. I can not seem to come up with a good idea for making the stickers state specific. Right now I just have the coordinates for the state capitol running along the side of the logo, but I think it does not stick out enough.

has anyone checked the recently logged caches today?

i thought that the cruddy weather we were having would deter all activities this weekend. i guess i'm wrong, we do have a few hardcore geocaching nuts out braving the elements. i hate to think of myself as a "fair-weather" geocacher, but it's true this weekend! kudos to all who are keeping the utah stash logs active.

I admit I was put back a little by the weather, but I had to work all weekend updating some servers so it made me feel better about it. My wife on the other hand was not understanding. She dragged me out last night to go to the Provo River cache. Not that I minded it was nice to get out. I wanted to back to "West of IPP" this weekend, but I think the weather would have really got in the way. Does anyone seem to notice that we have more hiders than seekers? Maybe its just me!!!

Guest leaper64

it will be real interesting when jeremy gets the improvements to the website done. i hope that we will be able to see how many times a utah stash has been found. comparing finds to hides will tell the story of hiders vs seekers. i'm like you krep, it seems like we do have more hiders.....that's ok though. the weather is still squirley, warmer weather will bring em out of the woodwork.

Hey Krep, when you do get back out to the "West of IPP" you might want to hit "Topaz Solitude" its quite close. I believe I was out there the day before your ill fated trip. BTW you could also bag my "Desert Mt Cache" its not too far from West of IPP & Topaz Solitude, I'd say 15-20 miles east.

i was just wondering, in the light of all the tree hugging that has been suggested lately, if we could use disposable cameras in some of our stashes to document the conditions of the environment at the stash location? one of my stashes contains a camera, and i seem to recall using the first frame to take a photo of the immediate area, with the stash in view. when i re-visit that location in a year or so, i can take another shot of the area and compare them. this could show that there is no or minimal impact due to the stash being in this location. this may help in areas that are "sensitive", and give us some real debating power to use against the Bukerizers. what are your thoughts on this?

We have had a very wet season here in AZ and I assume you've had the same there in UT. The vegetation is abundant and very green and the wildflowers are all over. If next year is dry, you might see a decrease in the vegetation that is natural and it would have nothing to do with the amount of visitation to your cache. The idea is good, but the pictures may be misleading.

I always take along my small digital camera to document the area, and for pictures for my accompanying website. I do this both for caches that I have found, and caches that I place. The one cache that I have placed does have a disposable camera in it. The idea of the finder taking a shot or two of the immediate area is not a bad idea.

the owner of the stash at "the rock" emailed me and confirmed that someone has taken it. delete this one (gc28d)from your gps waypoint lists. he also said that he may re-stash at this location sometime in the future since it recieved a lot of good reviews.

Alright.... I dont know how many of you saw my post about doing a adopt-a-highway program here in Utah. I really would like to know how many of you would be willing to do this. I dont need a definate answer now on your availibility, but if you were around and had the time, would you do it? I really, really want to do this and need to know if I have any support from our Utah folks. I cant maintain this road by myself but would only need about 10 people each time for about 2hours. Wrongway in AZ, suggested maybe a adopt-a-trail but that does not get a lot visibility. So me what you ALL think.

Krepism, The Adopt-A-Highway program is a great opportunity to expose GeoCaching in a positive light, and a great public service.

I've participated in these in the past and it is hard to organize everyone. The particular one I participated in was planned around a motorcycle event. The organizer planted Easter Eggs along the road sides. It was a memorable scene watching grown, wind burned, black leather clad bikers searching for pastel plastic eggs.

Maybe you could plan some type of Geo event on the cleanup day.

Jim

If you get them to put "AZ GeoCachers Rule" on the sign I'll come up there and help myself...:))

Link to comment
Guest leaper64

yes.

i would help. however, i do think that we need at least 10 other absolute positive responses (maybe twice that). i think that the pr could be great for us. on the other hand, if the group was not solid, it could put geocaching in a bad light.

Link to comment
Guest Krepism

I think you are correct. THe way that I look at it it this... I would to see as many people as possible show up, I realize that some peolpe have families (I dont) and trying to sync that many people to gether is very hard. If I could get atleast 10 people to say they would help, if their personal time permits, then i would do it. If i cant get enough people to help each time, no big deal I will personally take on the responibility. But I want to see effort from people and wilingness to help IF they can. Some people may just say no (maybe they dont want to pick up trash or think it degrading) and thats the count I am looking for. If I see 2 that say they will try and help, but 20 that say they will never help then I will not do it. I am not asking for people commit, I will not come to peoples houses and force them even if they say maybe, I just want to see people try. Maybe I am just beating a dead horse here, like every agrees this is a great idea to bring good PR and I will take on the responsibility to make sure it is cleaned up even if enough people dont show.

Hi leaper64,

I couldn't help but notice that you had a typo in your Hook's Loot cache.

You list as contents one "Homemade Sticker ?Utah Geocachers Rule?,

I'm sure you meant to type "Arizona GeoCachers Rule".

I'd hate to confuse anyone :))

wrongway,

yes, there is a typo there. it should say "utah geocachers rock". i was hoping it would get your attention.

my friend hookedtrout is making a visit to my area from idaho and i needed to give him a proper welcome.

btw, the sticker turned out ok. it's a color print of the geocaching logo, it says "geocaching.com" and then on the next line "UTAH GEOCACHERS RULE!". i laminated it and it has double sided adhesive on the back. it looks great on the outside of the stash container! i'll try leave one of these on all the stashes i visit. maybe you'll see one in 'zona soon. otherwise, come on up and see one.

Guest WrongWay

There you go with the typos again..."rule" I'm sure you meant "drool"...

That sticker sounds great. Is there a way to scan it in ? If you have it in *.jpg format you should be able to post it here or upload it to your cache page...

I'd like to have something like this to stick to the ammo boxes I've been using. Even just the GeoCaching logo.
