Geocaching Based Email

I was thinking that typing in text like this is the same as using all caps

Otherwise, I think it's a good idea. Wonder how much bandwidth it would take away from the server though. It's slow enough on the weekends.

Actually its not CAPS WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS and this is so people don't have to run and get their glasses to read what I have to say!.

But just for you i'll keep it small. It wouldn't take up alot of bandwidth If its set up right. If there is either parts of the server partitioned so its specifically for email or an email server. It depends this is still the lets see what others think phase.

Every time that this question's been brought up before, it's been pointed out that there are other services whose core competency is providing e-mail services. Geocaching.com's core competency is providing geocache listings, benchmark listings, travel bugs, etc. We are always begging for more features to enhance those core activities. I would rather that TPTB concentrate on what they do best.

If you have trouble reading the normal font size in the forums, you can set your own computer to display larger text. That way, you don't change anyone else's reading experience but your own. Not everyone wants "help" with reading posts.

It is neat, but we really don't want to be in the email business. Hotmail and Gmail already have plenty of bandwidth/disk space to meet your needs.

Additionally, I don't want emails @geocaching.com being sent that gives the impression they have some kind of authority for the web site.

Reason enough.

I wish more approvers used @geocaching.com addresses when conducting official business to establish that they actually do have some authorithy from the website.

There is nothing wrong with writing in a bigger font. That isn't the subject.

How can spammers get in if they aren't members? I'm talking about a geocaching based email. Not a hotmail where anyone can get it just by looking it up and finding one. And that can't spam you if you don't sign up for different things and use it for other then geocaching.

I'm not talking about having an email thats out on the web and free to anyone who wants one. I know there are alot of geocachers but there are more people that don't know about geocaching.

I would rather have an email that is just geocaching then have my regular email where I have to search through just to find my geocaching emails.

I say PHOOEY!! In addition to having an @geocaching.com email address, I would LOVE if GC.com became my one-stop source for discount airline tickets, tax advice, pet supplies, and consolidating my student loans!

All kidding aside, I think Jeremy and his crew already have their work cut out for them just keeping this ship afloat. (And I don't mean that in a negative way at all.) I'd rather they continue their focus on improving the services they offer that are actually related to geocaching.

This idea has problems....

users with spaces and odd characters in their user names

bandwidth

human resources

a solution that would be nice would be email aliasing =) say a user wanted to send ME an email they could then use ralann AT geocaching dot com and then that would forward to my REAL email account. that would be cool. it would reduce the need for the email a user page most of the time.

Would you like a free gmail account? That's what I use for all my geocaching related emails.

If you want a gmail invite, PM me with your email address.

I concer. AND I would rather of GC.com focus on potential features like the NEW CACHE in your area notice. That would be great.

Just set up a rule in your email settings to dump all your Geocaching email into a separate folder.

That's why I don't use my company email account for personal use. When I started working here I thought "how cool, I get an email address with "@Intel.com", but the more I thought about it the less I passed the address around. I wouldn't want someone thinking I'm the spokesman for the company, or want my personal email stored on the company's computer.

I was thinking that it would be neat to have geocaching email. Not just to send email but reply also. Instead of having to use a personal email. What about using a web based geocaching email such as username@geocaching.com I'm just wondering what others thought Or am I the only one.

My what large, purple text you have. B) Reminds me of a certain dinosaur that some children like.:(

I think it is a bad idea. No doubt, Jeremy and crew, like all companies, have a limited amount of resources (time, money, etc.) that they can devote to the business. As a customer of geocaching.com it is my desire that they use those resources for continued operation and improvement of the site. I don't see how branching out into the email provider business, even if it is just email for cachers, betters the site or the geocaching community.

Exactly!

I have 8 different email accounts through various host!!!

•One through my website(which is offline at the moment ;) )

•One through my ISP provider

•One through another trade related forum (I'm a moderator there is the only reason for it. Forum site issues is the only time I use it.)

•One on a "family only" email service that we have running on a my bro-in-laws computer. This is more or less for us to play with and communicate with in the family. He's learning IT at school.

Three different Hotmail accounts:

•One relate to my geocaching account here-

•One that is "specifically" for SPAM- This is tha address I use when you have to give an address to go to a site or be given access to a site. Once I get the password, I will print the page and delete the email. If I haven't signed up for anything recently, I just go in about once a week and dump the whole box without even bothering to read anything.

Shoot the service is free! Put it to some good use!!

•One for online newsletters, registering for trade shows, and joke list-I do get some minor SPAMming on this one too.

•And another that I only use for my business.

The only time I give that address out is when I am doing business with that person or company.

I hear people complain about recieveing tons of SPAM all the time, but I VERY RARELY get SPAM on my non-SPAM allowed accounts. Mainly because I don't freely give out those addresses.

I've done the numerous email accounts and thats fine if you want to try to keep track of so many. But there is a problem with using the free emails. Sometimes they don't take your geocaching name. So then what are you supposed to do if you want to use your name @hotmail.com or yahoo.com or which ever one you pick? And the other problem is some of the "free" emails are starting to charge people. Not the major ones but some of the others.

Yeah and there is a slight possibility that the company might not want that either....the "ba$tards".

That might depend upon how much that they charge for the service don't you think? I wonder how strict the limits are that they self impose upon running the business.

. . .

I also have several free email accounts. Three at Yahoo!, one at myway.com, and two through my ISP (which actually allows me to have 100 :D )

Only one of them gets spam -- the one at Yahoo! I use for signing up for suspicious things.

I don't think an email address @geocaching.com is necessary or even desirable.

Dumb idea.

Use @gmail.com, @hotmail.com, @yahoo.com or any of a hundred other free email services.

An @geocaching.com email address is pointless and serves no real useful purpose.

like I said before if you can log into a free email account with your geocaching name then that would be fine. But some geocaching names (I know for a fact) can't be registered with those free email accounts. And how is it a dumb idea I don't think any idea is a dumb one. Its feedback on what others think. It would be nice to have a way to communicate within geocaching web site between users besides just sending messages. And I wouldn't mind having to pay alittle bit of money if thats the issue.

You can already send messages from this site, and if the person wants to include their regular email address, that goes along with the message. :D

If you want to continue corresponding with that person, just save their message into a new folder for "Geocaching Buddies" or something like that. You can always send them a new email in the future without having to go through this site.

Of course, if they don't include their email with a response back to you, maybe it is because they don't want to get any replies . . . :D

Well give up yuor crusade, because it isn't going to happen.

You'll just have to make do not using your "geocaching name" on the other email services.

Is your geocaching name that spectacular that you JUST have to have an email account with it?

Is your GEOCACHING handle HelloKitty&Gang?

If so, then forget about ever having an email address called HelloKitty&Gang@somesite.com at any website.

It's the ampersand.

Anyhow ... give it up on the email suggestion.

Which server? The e-mail server?

THIS IS WHAT TYPING IN ALL CAPS LOOKS LIKE ON MY END OF THE PLANET. Strange.

I'm not talking about just me. I'm talking about other people too where they have spaces, numbers in front, characters other then numbers and letters. If there was a web site that could handle names like that then it probably wouldn't be a problem to use other email sites.
