Hi,

Any plans for adding a bookmark filter to GSAK.

For example create a filter that returns a list of waypoints.

For example I am going to London and I want to do the caches GCxxx1,GCxxx2 etc. The filter would just return these caches?

Thanks

Gary

You can effectively do this now.

Another way to do this would be to create a point filter for the locations of the caches...which you can again do by checking them and "adding checked waypoints" to the locations defining the arc/point filter.

Setting distance to 0 (or a very small value) should give you a filter that you can use without needing to reload a saved file of points.

I use the software on 2 machines, one has "program files" on c:\ and the other on E:\. The backup feature is great and I use this to make sure that GASC is the same on both machines.

BUT. . . using macro buttons is a real pain for me as they appear to need a full path to run from. i.e. although my macros are always stored under \program files\gask\macros\... I cant set up the macro buttons as the path (drive letter) is different on each machine. Just to make things interesting, the 2nd PC does not have a C:\, only a E: drive, so I cant use a common directory to install the software under.

Is there anyway that anyone can think of to get round this so that I can have one set of macro buttons? I have tried to only enter the macro name i.e. no path when setting up the button but that works OK if you run a macro manually first as GASK seems to remember the path but the next time you start the program you get an error saying no path.

Hope someone can help.

A Pentium 133mhz running Windows 98 and 64mb of ram would be the minimum  requirements, though it may resemble a snail on valium in the speed department. Best to keep your databases small if this is your configuration.

Thanks. This one has Pentium266 and a huge 32 MB of memory :-) Another 128 megs on its way, I'll try GSAK 6 again after that. Not expecting any quick action on this one, just to be able to load waypoints to GPS on a holiday

I tried also GSAK on wine on my desktop, but it did not succeed any better. Now waiting for the laptop memory..

I just tried entering a path relative to the root and the macro ran and worked fine.

Both seem to work ok for me.

Another work around:

If you keep the folder names the same on both computers, then just after the restore open up the GSAK.ini file in your favorite text editor and to a global replace on c:\ to e:\ or write a script that will do this for you.

Hi,

With Gsak, let's say I have 50 caches in my database. Found and unfound. Is it possible to update all those files, with the newest logs or notes or whatever, posted by other members, without having to redownload each one of them in the database? Can GSAK do this like it does when it updates my founds just by downloading a new cache from Geocaching.com?

Thanx

Yes, you are a premium member so you can do this by running Pocket Queries rather than one by one. Please see items 2 and 10 of the GSAK FAQ in the help file or online here http://www.gsak.net/help/hs1070.htm

If you have never run a PQ before try this turorial

Tried a PQ. On Geocaching.com, in the PQ section, found an option called MY FINDS add to queue. I did get by mail, a zip file of all ma found caches. I unziped the file and load it in my database. Everything goes OK. My database options is set to always and my found status is also set to always. Unfortunatly, the files are not updated with the new logs posted by members.

I believe that the new "My Finds" feature on gc.com generates a PQ that has only your logs in it, not those of other members (at least that's been my experience).

If you generate a regular PQ with these caches, you should get the last 5 logs plus any of your logs on that cache. To date, I've not been able to figure out a way to get all of my found caches (spread across five states) in one PQ, so I have to generate mutliple PQ's to get them all if I want to update the waypoints in GSAK. I'm about at the point of deciding it isn't worth the effort!

You should be able to ctrl-click on each state in the state list so you have all five in one PQ. I use that method to cover 10 states & BC (using three PQ's by date as my finds don't fit in one). Then one macro to load them all.

My system burped. I don't know what I did but when I try to open GSAK, an error window pops up to send you the report. When I click the send, it just pops back up. The only way to get rid of it is ctrl/alt/delete.

If the automatic error send won't work on your system then you can still send me the error report manually. Just attach the file gsak.elf in an email to me (you will find this file in the install folder of GSAK)

Smaller Font in HTML Output

---------------------------------

I'm actually trying to switch from yagcu to gsak, to generate my palm database.

using yagcu, i got a font size, allowing me to read the cache description on the palm without horizontal scrolling for each line (html page width did fit on palm display because of small font).

using gsak, the html font is really big, so i have to horizontal scroll for each line.

how can i reduce the html font size for gsak?

btw: i tried this with isilox for converting to palm database.

Thanks for the quick reply, both work fine on my PC as well but I think I will use the first suggestion as it is slightly more elegant and there is less risk of me messing up the ini file!

Add Maps into Cache Descriptions

using spoiler sync and a gsak script, it is possible to add spoiler pictures to gsak's html output.

You can add any picutures to GSAK in the user notes. So if you have an image if the map then you can add it to the HTML via a user note (click on the picture button)

If you have a connection to the Internet then you can add mapping to GSAK via the custom URL's. Just preceed the name of your custom URL with ! (an explanation mark) and that URL will then show as a hot link in the cache details.

maps in gsak

than problem would be to get the maps on the local harddisk, and link them to the gsak note, together with the spoiler images.

is there a tool grabbing the maps, based on a gpx file (or a loc file)?

is there a gsak macro linking these map files?

I don't know of a way to change the HTML export font size in GSAK. I use Cachemate on my Plam PDA, a free to try, $8 to buy program that's worth every penny! Cachemate is a caching specific PDA database that allows you to change font sizes and so much more...

Count Difference

At times the count of my found caches is different between geocaching.com and GSAK v6.0.2. The reason appears to be cache events that I've attended not being shown as found in GSAK unless I change that status manually.

Wist List Request?

Geocaching.com tracks the date each cache is found, but this information is not shown in GSAK after importing .gpx files. Can those dates be imported?

Link to comment
Your GPX file has to be reloaded after your log for it to be reflected in GSAK. If you go to the cache page and click on the GPX icon under"Click icon to download", thios should open up GSAK and ask you if you want to load this file. Say yes and it will be updated. You can do this for every new find or have your pocket query run and load that.

I have a "found caches" query that I use to keep GSAK up to-date, but the date found is only filled when I manually enter cache finds into GSAK. Thanks for your suggestion but after I followed your advice and imported a new .gpx file the situation was unchanged (still no entry for date found).

GSAK does import the found dates, assuming you're importing GPX (not LOC files).

For this to work, you have to tell GSAK how to identify your finds (i.e. your ID). See the GSAK help file or online here: Setting Your Geocaching Name

How can I find out the GC ID # for a cacher other than myself?

Thanks

If you move your cursor over their username in a post (e.g., this one here...the one over the picture), the user ID shows up at the bottom of your browser where the link URL is shown. It should end in showuser=[iD number].

Link to comment
Is there a way to find the ID # other than  by looking at the user on these forums?

ie.  what if the cacher doesn't use the forums? or you can't find a post by the cacher?

One option is having a GPX file with at least one log from them (or contains a cache they have hidden).

Open up the GPX file in your favorite text editor, then search for their Geocaching.com name

For example if you wanted to find my id this way you need a gpx file with at least one of my logs, then you can search for ClydeE

I couldn't find any other way to get the number. However, you can look them up on gc.com, view their profile, and then click on "View quorum posts" and it should display all of their posts, if any.

I have a question, it has more then likely already been addressed but I could not find what I need.

Here's what I would like to do. I have a Garmin76CS, PDA Tungsten E, and us GSAK. I have so many waypoints that I end up filling the GPSr. I end up not being able to load anymore waypoints. I have 6 databases set up in GSAK, can I download waypoints from the GPSr back and forth into GSAK with out lossing anything?

If I can I would just load the waypoints for the database I will be using.

Thanks for your help,

Cache On, Al

Your GPSr can't hold all the information that is in the GSAK database so if you do the round trip you will certainly loose information.

However, I don't see why you need to do the round trip. Just keep all your waypoints in GSAK. Now when you want a group of them stored in your GPSr clear all waypoints first, then send the required filter or database from GSAK to your GPSr

I do exactly what Clyde suggests and it works like a charm.

Also, to emphasize a point Clyde made in passing, if you're not already using them, learn how to use "filters" in GSAK (see the GSAK help). It's a fairly easy and very powerful way of tailoring what you load on your GPSr (e.g. a subset of a database, if that's all you need).

Edit: clarity and a typo

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I was not real clear in my original post. But the answers I got still answer my question. Looks like what I should and can do is, when needed delete the waypoints from the GPSr. Then load waypoints from the desired database. Done with that database, delete it and load a new database.

I do use the filter option a little. The main database I use has something like 1100 w.p. so when I load into my GPSr I will set the distance to something like "less then 20 miles" I have also filtered by direction so as not to load WP in a direction I will not be caching.

Thanks for the help,

Al

Give Clyde a break and spend some time with GSAK, and read the help files, before suggesting new features - you'll discover that Clyde has built in many, many features (and where he hasn't, there's usually a good reason for it)!  At least look at the Options screen before suggesting an option that's right there at the top of the screen!

Edit: And remember that the right-click is your friend - right clicking on a waypoint offers a handy context menu, which includes "Send to GPSr Now", per your other suggestion above.

Hopefully I'm not missing a context sensitive menu, an option, or an existing macro, but I'd like to suggest a new option for the right-click while on the GSAK main screen with a waypoint selected: "Update waypoint from Geocaching.com"

Or, if such a feature exists, can someone point me to it?

Thanks,

I am sorry, but without "spidering" gc.com I am not aware of any possible way of doing this (even if you are a premium member)

Clyde,

I've been using GSAK now for 23 days and each day I learn new things we can do with your program that are just amazing. I surely learn a lot just by reading this forum every day. One thing I was wondering, I usely like to put as much information on the screen as possible without having to scroll left to write. I usualy squeeze the columns as much as possible althought sometimes I don't have any choice but scroll. In order to gain a little more space, (mind you, I'm not a programer so I don't have any idea of the work involved) in your next GSAK update, maybe the WATCH column could be identified by a pair of eye glasses just like on gc.com when we put a cach on watch, considering it's just a check column. This would shrink the column by half I'm sure. Just like the notes, lock and TB columns.

Thank you.

Good suggestion. I will add that in.

I will scout around for the graphic, but if you happen to have a .bmp file of the glasses at about the same size as the other image headings, please send it my way.

Edit: Also don't forget you can save and restore views. This lets you save the columns displayed, order, and width. Then at any time you can swap to a different view from the drop down list.

Already have three different views saved. Thanx. As for the .bmp file, I don't have any but maybe another member reading this post could help and I sure will send one to you if ever I find one. Edited by Nomades

I just went on gc.com and copied the glasses icone. It was a .gif file. I then saved it as a .bmp file. Would this work? when I open the file, it does show the glasses picture.

Yes, but it needs to be "shrunk" down to size for the GSAK headings.

Sometimes when reducing the graphic resolution of an image the result is shall we say "less than perfect"

I am far from graphics type of guy, but email it to me and I will do my best with it.

There is a two click method (1) right click the waypoint and select "show online (in browser) and then (2) click the GPS eXchangefile button in the browser.

Clyde,

Love your program. Was wondering if you could create a Macro to pull out all the waypoints from a text file? Here is a sample. If you could grab all the waypoints then change the format to fit your filter (W,xxxxxxxx), then anyone with MS Streets would have a way to create Caches along a route. I can create the program in cobol, but I don't have a compiler to share it. I already have one created with MS Access, but I don't think many people have MS Access.
