+carsonscrew
Hello all. We wanted to know if anyone has seen any software that will allow you to create custom Mapsource maps from papper maps and that are uploadable to a Garmin GPS unit or that will allow you to actualy edit an existing map (add roads contours, ETC), which does not require one to have an advanced degree in program ENG’ing. Any guidance in the right direction would be appreciated. Below is a list of links we have found so far on the topic…. But all require some advanced knowledge of command line and are just not that easy! http://gwprojects.orcon.net.nz/gps/tutorials.html#GPSMapEdit http://www.gpstm.com/eng/dekode_eng.htm http://www.gpsinformation.org/adamnewham/article2/ http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm http://www.keenpeople.com/index.php?option...tid=17&Itemid=3 Edited August 17, 2005 by carsonscrew Quote Link to comment

+Redwoods Mtn Biker
Hi- My book has step-by-step instructions on how to make custom maps for your GPS. The focus is on taking USGS data, available for free online, and creating detailed maps (1:24,000 scale equivalent) from it. No registry hacks are involved. The little bit of command line stuff is laid out very clearly, as I said...step-by-step. It goes into how to do this for both Garmin and Magellan. Lowrance needs a little different approach, and there is info on that as well. +elgecko
When I first got my GPS I studied and experimented long and hard making my own topo maps. I did not want to spend the extra money for Mapsource. I made my own topo maps which showed elevation, streams, and lakes. It took a few different programs, and time. Well after making 8 megs of maps of my area and loading them into my GPS, I decided to break down and buy the Mapsource CD. I have not left any of the CD's yet, but will place them in some caches from time to time. Quote Link to comment
