Category Proposal: Places > Coordinate Play > Grid

Recommended Posts

Several gps games exist around the objective of getting as close as possible to a given position.

E.g. Geodashing (tm?) monthly picks random coordinates around the world and the game is to visit as much of them as possible before the end of the month.

You can team up so you can cover a larger area and yes the teamplay is more fun. This game wouldn't need a subcategory it fits nicely under Coordinate Play.

Another gps game is visiting major grid vertices like visiting all full degree coordinates around the world. Its called the Degree Conlfluence Project (tm?)

On a local scale there are simulair projects.

In Holland we have a locationless cache called Hokjesgeest (Boxspirit).

The purpose is to visit all corners of your favorit 2*2 km geocaching box. The box needs to be based on the local grid called Rijksdriehoekmeting (RD)

You need to make pictures of your GPS as near as possible to this corner - showing the RD coordinates to prove your visit - .

The expectation is that in the end 4 pictures will be available for every odd RD coordinate set.

You could call it the Dutch Local Grid Confluence Project :-)

To nicely migrate this locationless cache to Waymarking.com a subcategory:

Places > Coordinate Play > Local Grid Game

or - covering both local and global grid games -

Places > Coordinate Play > Grid Game

would be needed.

This is what I propose and I offer to manage this subcategory.

So shoot. :P

Just to give people an impression.

This category will result in a way to stake out your own geocaching area.

For the Dutch gridsystem DaanVindZe has entered these area's into a GoogleEarth format.

Below you find the results for the area around The Hague.

ge_hokken.jpg

This was the KML file.

It was produced using this xls2kml spreadsheet. Handy for those of us not ready to enter the xml arena.

So please support this category. ;)

Stake out your geocaching box.

To get support worldwide I am working on a UTM based version.

I wanted I will support a Ordenance Grid version.

Or any other grid version needed.

So "dibs" your local grid or UTM grid box.

To show you one of the possibilities. This is nice:

This is better:

Preview yours.

So if you want to put your stacked out geocaching home box on your customized credit card please support this subcategory.

Just to be clear is the Catagory proposal  Coordinate play?

This subcategory proposal was: Places > Coordinate Play > Grid Play

At this moment I think it should be a bit more specific. So this would be:

Places > Coordinate Play > Stake Out

The general fields for this subcategory would be:

a. A general description of th estaked out area.

b. The calculated WGS84 coordinates for each box corner.

c. The grid coordinates for each box corner.

c. A description of every boxcorner and the possibilty to connect pictures to these boxcorners.

Imagine the google earth webservice which would hsow each box with pictures and descriptions connected to each box corner. ;)

The Dutch waymark within this subcategory would be named: Hokjesgeest

The english description can be found: here.

In this way I could keep the original description.

You log this waymark by staking out your box and posting pictures for all corners.

All logs would be for a different 2*2 km box.

The International waymark could be called: Box It In UTM or just "Box It".

This version would be based on UTM. It would cover the whole earth. Cell size to be decided. But I expected 2000*2000 meter cells starting at the odd km mark would be fine for thsi one too..

So how do you like "Stake Out"?
