+Team Hippo
I have received an email on an address I use exclusively for geocaching, purporting to be from Jay Proctor with the subject ‘Lets Share Photos’, and inviting me to sign up to a web site that offers “a new, free service where I put in my contact info for you, you put in your contact info for me, and everyone stays up to date automatically.” Does anybody know if this Jay Proctor is a genuine geocacher, or is this some sort of scam? Needless to say I have no intention of opening the given link on the information provided so far. Link to comment

+Bud Lightbeer
Many of these e-mails are sent out by MALWARE that has infected the unsuspectings computer. My partner had e-mails sent to her entire contact list by a piece of software like this. A lot of the time they are after personal information. Basically, if you are not expecting the e-mail or don't know who it's from, I suggest deleteing it without opening. Also make sure your firewall and AV software are up to date. Let's be safe out there in CYBER land Link to comment
+Birdman-of-liskatraz
The perth pathfinders e-mail is for a Geocaching Forum for Scotland. It's quite legit though with a different "Flavour" to here! I agree with Bud keep your Antivirus up to date and run some Anti Spyware software - AND- be sensible about odd e-mails -BUT- lets not be paranoid about everything..! Link to comment

I enclose you our page of Geeocaching Italy that speaks about the initiative, the addresses of the 6 caches put on Francigena ( the number 6 is located in Switzerland) and some sites to explain the Way Francigena. dpoet
I recieved one today from Susan roberts, This one seems a genuine link to the Scottish forum. My computer is well protected so i followed the link. No personel details were asked for. but it used my geocaching address which i thought was hidden, very strange. There does not seem to be much activity on the forum. If i start getting spam i'll just set up another email address. Seems to me they are just trying to generate some interest in the forum. +Haggis Hunter
I have not received an email from perth pathfinders, well not one the same way as others have. I can say that it is a genuine forum, as when it first started I was a moderator on it. I am however no longer a member, so have had no dealings with these current spam messages. PP's is a member of the admin on that forum, but I do find it odd that they have spammed so many people to advertise, as I remember a comment from another member of the Admin saying something along the lines of, 'Let him go we will be better without him' Obviously Not, or they wouldn't be resorting to spam for publicity. Perhaps perth pathfinders can explain why so many people have received this through their GC.com account? Link to comment

+dino-irl
it used my geocaching address which i thought was hidden, very strange. If your address is hidden you can still receive email from other GC.com members. If you click on your profile and click the Send Email option it'll open a new page where you can be sent an email. The sender never sees your email address though (unless you reply using your email rather than GC.com of course) Link to comment
+t.a.folk
Just our opinion on spam mail. We only consider it spam when we get emails from people we have never heard of that are trying to sell us something or are offering us a "good time " and/or introductions to porns sites for example. Such emails NEVER get opened by us and are deleted via spam filter . In this instance knew the sender of email is a cacher and we had no qualms about opening the email . Again ..only our opinion . The Royles
knew the sender of email is a cacher and we had no qualms about opening the email I do not share your trust of ALL geocachers. My view is it is a bad pecedent to allow bulk sending of emails to people you dont know, with a web link they have not heard of. If it is genuine, I am sorry if I have made trouble for them, but there are other methods to advertise than that. Just my view on it - FWIW Link to comment
