I have received an email on an address I use exclusively for geocaching, purporting to be from Jay Proctor with the subject ‘Lets Share Photos’, and inviting me to sign up to a web site that offers “a new, free service where I put in my contact info for you, you put in your contact info for me, and everyone stays up to date automatically.”

Does anybody know if this Jay Proctor is a genuine geocacher, or is this some sort of scam? Needless to say I have no intention of opening the given link on the information provided so far.

I got an email only this morning thru my dedicated geocaching email address saying that they've noticed that I do alot of posting on this forum and why dont I try this one as well, there was a link to another site somewhere.

Of course I never clicked on it and to be honest,Ive dumped the email in question now but I thought it was rather strange as I wouldnt call 32 postings alot.....

I looked at it. It seems to be a genuine forum, but the threads I looked at were not all that geocaching oriented - so I binned it too!

Many of these e-mails are sent out by MALWARE that has infected the unsuspectings computer. My partner had e-mails sent to her entire contact list by a piece of software like this. A lot of the time they are after personal information. Basically, if you are not expecting the e-mail or don't know who it's from, I suggest deleteing it without opening. Also make sure your firewall and AV software are up to date.

Let's be safe out there in CYBER land

I had that too, reckon they're trying to drum up business.

I think it was real - there were known cachers posting and a pretty thorough links page to other sites and I have heard of a forum mainly serving the northern end of the country.

Yeh, I thought too , can't understand why they decided to go down that route thou.

Why didnt they just post a link on this forum and let people decide for themselves

Could be classed as spamming if they are not careful

we got that one too and thought it was a bit odd - and the fact that it now seems so many of us got it - that must have taken some time to do!

A week ago we also got this one

"Good morning,

We are a group of geocachers Italian and have begun one new adventure: we would want to put many cache on the Way Francigena, the ancient road that before year 1000 joined England to Italia and famous yield from Sigeric Archbishop in its pilgrimage to Rome. We have just put 5 Francigena caches in Tuscany, others of it will follow in Italy and my task is to find others geocahers in France, Switzerland and England, on the tracing where passed Sigeric , he passed on the road from Canterbury to Dover. I enclose you our page of Geeocaching Italy that speaks about the initiative, the addresses of the 6 caches put on Francigena ( the number 6 is located in Switzerland) and some sites to explain the Way Francigena. Are you interested to put one cache from Canterbyry to Dover with name of the Francigena? close to some castle or church or villages visited from Sigeric, surely you will find traces on documents i join here. Thanks for the answer

Needless to say haven't bothered with that one either ....(or maybe that is just me being harsh)

Susan Roberts is perth pathfinders - a genuine cacher from Perth in Scotland. There is an "alternative" forum which has been running for some time now, entitled Geofrees. It is mainly for cachers in Scotland, but others are members too.

This sounds completely different fom a request to share photos....

I know that the romans were brilliant designers but that must have been one hell of a fly-over

Yeh, that Italian Email does sound very...........interesting to say the least

If it is genuine, I hope they are not thinking of listing them as a multi, imagine that walk inbetween points ?

I recieved one today from Susan roberts, This one seems a genuine link to the Scottish forum. My computer is well protected so i followed the link. No personel details were asked for. but it used my geocaching address which i thought was hidden, very strange. There does not seem to be much activity on the forum. If i start getting spam i'll just set up another email address. Seems to me they are just trying to generate some interest in the forum.

I had the same e-mail from Fabrizio. I replyed and from his subsequent e-mails I'm sure he and the project are genuine. It's an interesting idea and had I lived closer to Dover / Canterbury I would certainly have taken part in it.

If their forum is just for cachers in Scotland, why did we all get invites then??

I wen onto the Forum, found it very much a clique and quite anti Groundspeak Forums.

I won't be going back.

I have not received an email from perth pathfinders, well not one the same way as others have. I can say that it is a genuine forum, as when it first started I was a moderator on it. I am however no longer a member, so have had no dealings with these current spam messages.

PP's is a member of the admin on that forum, but I do find it odd that they have spammed so many people to advertise, as I remember a comment from another member of the Admin saying something along the lines of, 'Let him go we will be better without him'

Obviously Not, or they wouldn't be resorting to spam for publicity.

:anicute:<_<:anibad:

Perhaps perth pathfinders can explain why so many people have received this through their GC.com account?

If your address is hidden you can still receive email from other GC.com members. If you click on your profile and click the Send Email option it'll open a new page where you can be sent an email. The sender never sees your email address though (unless you reply using your email rather than GC.com of course)

Just our opinion on spam mail.

We only consider it spam when we get emails from people we have never heard of that are trying to sell us something or are offering us a "good time " and/or introductions to porns sites for example.

Such emails NEVER get opened by us and are deleted via spam filter .

In this instance knew the sender of email is a cacher and we had no qualms about opening the email .

Again ..only our opinion .

I do not share your trust of ALL geocachers. My view is it is a bad pecedent to allow bulk sending of emails to people you dont know, with a web link they have not heard of.

If it is genuine, I am sorry if I have made trouble for them, but there are other methods to advertise than that.

Just my view on it - FWIW

I'm closing this thread, as my original query has been answered to my satisfaction and an explanation given, no harm done and a personal apology received as well as a general one being posted here. Thanks Jason, I appreciate that.

It has also gone off topic somewhat.
