Magellin
not compatable with current users GPSR units!!! If you think 2' of increesed accuracy is worth it, get ready to buy another unit! Now china can guide the nuke missles to the united states!!! Now china can guide the nuke missles to the united states!!! Boy! Now there's a leap of technology not often seen. ;-) A country that can launch ICBM's and other types of rocketry have been able to get it done with heretofore 18th. century technology. And true to form, the United States of America gives it away. Astounding. Edited December 27, 2005 by Team Cotati Quote Link to comment

GeoBobC
The Brits can put this in their cars, since they're now beginning to track all vehicles to collect additional mileage taxes. Wonder when it will be in our cars? Quote Link to comment
+Greymane
The intent is to establish levels of accuracy with the basic signal you get today being a free service, but all higher accuracy signals will be a paid service (not to mention, needing new hardware). I am curious what they will charge for the subscription. Quote Link to comment
+user13371
The Brits can put this in their cars, since they're now beginning to track all vehicles to collect additional mileage taxes... Really? Source, please? A cheaper and easier way to "collect additional mileage taxes" is to slap another tax on petrol. Quote Link to comment
+geognerd
This was on Slashdot a few days ago. The article they linked to is this one. Maybe someone can find a better article. Quote Link to comment

+Klemmer
....Now china can guide the nuke missles to the united states!!! .... Newsflash: You don't need even 3 meter accuracy for nukes. Also don't foget, US DOD holds the "OFF" switch for OUR system. It gets turned off at the first ICBM missle launch warning. Who will have it for the European's Gallileo system? France? Good luck! Which, by the way, is one of the driving forces behind Gallileo. Nothing wrong with our system, for most purposes, even military, except it is OURS (and free!) (OK, just step off soapbox, Klemmer, and no one gets hurt....) +user13371
GeoNerd & GeoBobC: Thanks for the links. Interesting articles, and maybe good fodder for civil rights discussions. But snapping license plates with roadside cameras has nothing to do with GPS, Galileo, accuracy down to the meter, etc... The articles also said nothing about equipment being "putting this into cars" or mileage taxes. Quote Link to comment
GeoBobC
"The articles also said nothing about equipment being "putting this into cars" or mileage taxes." True...not yet....? Quote Link to comment
+user13371
True...not yet....? Of course, not yet. So any discussion of GPS accuracy should turn to government monitoring of citizens. In fact, ALL discussions of EVERYTHING should devolve to that, even if the original topic has nothing to do with it. The complete lack of evidence is proof that the conspiracy is working! +Hemlock
Looks like we're getting close to seeing Godwin's Law in play here Back on topic, please, folks. Leave the politics out of it. Thanks Quote Link to comment
+I.R. Geonut
As long as my GPS works after all the bombs drop I'm cool. Quote Link to comment
GeoBobC
(Although the original post was regarding accuracy), GPS is being used in the U.S. to track motorists on a trial basis in WA. I believe these types of uses will push the need for more accurate equipment: http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/...m&date=20051227 Quote Link to comment
