+the hermit crabs
In this post in the Geocaching Announcements forum, Jeremy says "The Travel bug distance calculation has changed. There will be a few days before the distance calculations update correctly so please be patient." Quote Link to comment
+Team Position Police
My poor TB lost over 12,200 miles. I hope they really do come back Quote Link to comment
Gunfighter26
Speaking of losing miles, I just dropped one in Maryland that I picked up in California. I says it only has about 6 miles on it. It might be because I accidentally deleted the log entry saying that I dropped it off. It's listed on the page for the cache where I dropped it off, and because of that I can't seem to recreate the log entry. Is there any way the deleted entry can be retrieved? Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
Retrieve the bug, back date a drop, delete the retrieve posting.. Quote Link to comment
Gunfighter26
Ah! It's all so clear now! Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
Yep, and a perfect example of why cachers should always record the bug number. Quote Link to comment
Gunfighter26
Yep, because that was going to be my next question...I have to physically go out to the cache to get that tracking number again, huh. If I just log the travel bug and not the cache itself, it won't screw up my number of finds, right? Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
D'oh! I thought you had the number. I wasn't meaning to make you the bad example. Yes, you will need it. Perhaps you can 'pulldown' the number from the enter tracking number field? You know how like when you start typing in a number and what was typed in before pops up as a selection? Retrieving the same bug won't increase your bug count. Post a note on the cache page to drop it and you won't get another 'find' for the cache. Gunfighter26
Yeah, I tried that "auto complete" thing for the number, but it didn't work! I'm figuring I might not even have to log anything on the cache's page, just the travel bug's page. Lesson learned on saving those numbers! Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
You wouldn't be able to have the bug listed on the cache page without posting a log on the cache. At worst you could just post a note saying 'oops, could the next finder log it into the cache then retrieve it.' Quote Link to comment
+Aim High!
Yeah, I tried that "auto complete" thing for the number, but it didn't work! I'm figuring I might not even have to log anything on the cache's page, just the travel bug's page. Lesson learned on saving those numbers! Just one other thought on how to get the serial number. Just email the bug owner and explain it and ask for them to send you the serial number. Occassionally this won't work because the bug owner is inactive or they don't know the serial number (I've actually had bug owners email me for their serial number). So, another way is to look down through the log entries and you might notice that one of the more buggier cachers like MaxB on the River may have moved the bug. I know that MaxB has the serial numbers for every TB they have moved--over 4,000 now! I also have an excel spreadsheet where I track name, serial number, cache retrieved from, date, cache placed in, date, and mileage moved--I know, pretty anal uh! But, we all get our kicks in different ways. Hope this helps...Aim High! Quote Link to comment
Gunfighter26
Yeah, I'm gonna start a log...I tried emailing the owner, and he didn't have a record of the number. No big deal, I'm sure it'll get straightened out once the next person picks it up. Quote Link to comment

Sometimes I miss the obvious...and the obscure...and...well anyway Fortunately (Thank you gc.com) the tracking number is now listed on the bug's page. Viewable only by the owner of course. Gunfighter, if you want you can let the owner know it's listed on the bug page under owner options. Edited January 20, 2006 by BlueDeuce Quote Link to comment
+ZackJones
If the mileage is off on a bug you own try clicking the recalc mileage button. I just did that on my personal travel coin and my miles are back. Quote Link to comment
+Hours together
Sure do want to get those miles back on our travel bug! We lost a lot of mileage. Also others that we placed did not all get their mileage. Clicking to recalculate mileage did not work. Quote Link to comment
+JC_Geo
Our TB has been in 2 caches and the hands of 3 members over the last 3 days and he shows no miles. When will it show miles traveled? Quote Link to comment

+ZackJones
In another thread Jeremy stated there seems to be some issues with the TB mileage change he made recently and he's turning the mileage calculation off temporarily. I have confidence that he'll get things straightened out and we'll see our mileage figures again soon. Quote Link to comment
+Thrak
Yeah, Jeremy has disabled TB mileage for the moment due to some issues. I have a bug that's gone from California to Hawaii to Minnesota - it shows 8.8 miles. If I click to recalculate the mileage it jumps up to only 9 miles. Definitely broken. Quote Link to comment

Having recently met MaxB on the River personally, I've seen his Excel spreadsheet of all the travel bugs that he and his wonderful wife have helped move around the world. He is a good source, if you lose your TB serial number. If any of you have the pleasure of having a TB land on one of his TB tours, you will be impressed! I guarantee it! And I've been playing with the mileage on a couple of my bugs this afternoon, and the recalculate distance works on some, but not all. So I'm confident that this mileage thing will be all sorted soon. I have confidence in the Groundspeak staff. Just give them some time to sort through their priorities with the upgrades. +lathama
i have been waiting for 2 weeks to see milages re appear and still nothing. This change seems to have done more bad than good and maybe we should put up with the site problems and leve things alone. Why mess with something when it works? Quote Link to comment
