Rss Feed Is Back :)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

If you haven't noticed the RSS Feed is back for the UK :-)

Click on the RSS button at the bottom of the page and choose the UK one.

For those who don't know what RSS Feed is - it gets a list of every post in the UK forum and shows them in the viewer. It also alerts you to new posts. You can then just mouse over it to read the post or click on it to go direct to the topic.

and get a free viewer here

Hmm. Downloaded and installed the software, clicked on the RSS button, an then ??? I didn't see 'the UK one'. Could you give more detailed guidance please?

I don't know what it actually does yet, but it's at the bottom of the dropdown list when you click the RSS button.

When I click on it, I do not see more than one item on the drop-down menu - Geocaching announcements.

When I click on it I get - wait for it - this:

-

- Hello Everyone!

For anyone who has bought a MioA201, this is where we can give plusses and minuses, ask questions etc. Bearing in mind the uk advice line is 35p a minute and staffed it seems by people who seem to think I will be able to plug the unit into the car charger when I am walking on the moor for hours on end, this could save us all a bit of cash!

That leads nicely into my first problem.

The battery is pants! Seems to last 3hours ish when gps is on. Have purchased an external battery pack which plugs in through the USB cable (http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=3114) , but don't think it is all going to fit into the otterbox ( http://www.otterbox.com/ ) somehow! will figure something out and report back to you. Anyone got any other solutions?

I run Fugawi 1:50000 landranger on it and it works fine but i cannot seem to directly upload loc waypoint files. ANy ideas??

Other than that, its a great little machine, and i can download the clue photos onto it to aid me in the hunt if i get a little stuck.

Still new to geochaching but ohmigod what a great sport!

Cheers,

Paul, Helen, Hamish the Otterhound.

Memory Map Questions

-

- hi

I am using GSAK and exporting to Memory Map. However, I can't find a convenient way to deal with puzzle and multi caches. If I solve a puzzle I can enter a new waypoint on MM, which I then have to lose when I import a new csv file.

Is there a way round that? I'd also like to keep the tracks of my tracks that MM records when caching to see how far I've walked etc, but again I have to lose them when I delete all to avoid duplication when reloading.

Also, can I get the notes I enter from GSAK to appear in the Properties section of the cache when I click on it? That way I could leave part-solved puzzle co-ords there and be able to read them on the move?

Thanks for any ideas / help!

Please Help - Which Gps?

-

-
I am new to Caching and need to buy a GPS.
I already have a Navman iCN520 to help me get to the right area in the car but need something now to help me locate the cache.
I have been looking at Garmin products more specifically the Legend cx or the Vista cx. Money isn't too much of a problem but don't want to spend unneccesarily!!!
I think the only difference between the two is the altimeter and compass - are these really worth spending the extra?? or would anybody recommend a cheaper alterantive that will do the job that i need?
Also if I buy the legend or vista, I know these come with a basemap - is this good enough or do you have to buy others...have looked at the TOPO sd maps but again these are expensive

Please help!!!

That's the actual RSS feed XML source code - you need to point your RSS feed reader to this file and it will then consume it and display new posts on the UK section of the forums as and when they are made in real time a bit like a glorified news ticker. Each one will have a link to the actual thread on the forums so you can read more about it.

Or if you have a Mac, just click on the RSS feed link and the Safari web browser formats the feed and displays it in the browser

Did that, and copied the url for that page of text into the 'add clips' and it worked. But how do I get the other things on the dropdown list when they are below the edge of my page (Firefox and IE7 just as bad as each other on this!)?

This is the link from the bottom of the RSS drop down below you need for your RSS aggregator software:

http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?act=rssout&id=7

Thanks - that worked fine.

Anyone know why I can't see the full drop-down menu?

Hover your pointer on the drop down list and scroll down you'll see the full list, it appears to add extra length to the page when you click on the RSS link.

Wow. I never even tried to personalise the Google home page before. Having the rss feeds on the front is great. Thanks for the heads up Lakeuk.

If you use Mozilla Thunderbird as your mail reader then it's pretty simple to add RSS feeds. If any one is interested just shout and I'll put the instructions here.

Yes please!

OK.

At the bottom click on RSS and click on the UK item.

This will open a browser window with the address

http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?act=rssout&id=7

in the bar.

Highlight this and copy (I use control and c but others use the right mouse click)

Back to Thunderbird :-

Click on the very top folder in the tree on the left.

In the main pane on the right click create a new account, choose RRS and blogs.

Click next and fill in a sensible name like geocaching (well - up to you)

Click next and finish.

Point to the new item you have created in the tree view on the left, right click and choose properties.

I set mine to check for new articles on start up, and to check for new ones every 10 mins. Up to you.

Then click on manage subscriptions. In the URL box paste in the bit you copies from the browser bar.

You can force the RSS account to go looking for new messages by right clicking on the geocaching item and choosing the get messages entry.

Sounds more complicated than it is.

If you get stuck mail me and I'll have a go at a Word doc with screen shots.
