+CachingCoins
I think this is a new twist on an old topic. I'm not bringing this up to get the discussion going again of whether or not to release real coins! That's already been done over & over again. What I'm saying is: Someone replaced my REAL coin with a fake. I don't know how long it had been traveling like that. It wasn't until someone was disappointed enough in not finding a real coin & e-mail me, that I discovered it had been replaced. I've now posted on my coin pages that I am releasing a real coin. I already drill holes in them & tag them. I will continue to release real coins. I wanted to warn others of this happening. Do I need to take pictures of them before I release them & add it to their web pages? I'm looking for sympathy & input Quote Link to comment
+WWC-World's Worst Cacher
Ok I will bite! What is a fake coin? Quote Link to comment
+Eartha
That means someone made a photocopy of it, and kept the coin and released the photocopy. Someone doing that to someone else's coin is stealing the coin, it's wrong, just plain wrong! Quote Link to comment
+welch
... I don't know how long it had been traveling like that. It wasn't until someone was disappointed enough in not finding a real coin & e-mail me, that I discovered it had been replaced. ... Um... What would someone email you when disappointed they found your traveler? Quote Link to comment
+AtlantaGal
Huh that's an interesting twist. I wonder if any of mine that are still active have been replaced with a replica with tracking number or if they're all still the heavy metal coins I originally released. I guess no news is good news in that regard. Sorry this happened to you. Quote Link to comment
+Eartha
Lot of cachers are disappointed when they find a copy instead of the real thing and some speak up about it. It's been discussed a lot as the OP said. Only this time the OP is not the one that sent out the copy, someone took their coin, and replaced it with a copy. Bad form! Quote Link to comment
+Hula Bum
That is just wrong. You've got my sympathy! Quote Link to comment

(It helps to build a history of where it was last placed to determine a trend) And yes, putting a photo of the traveler on the page does help. If people find your "coin" and it doesn't match the photo or the description, they will contact you sooner. Quote Link to comment
ParentsofSAM
Oh my that is terrible. I never thought about that happening to coins. It is obvious when some one steals them as they never travel again. But this way they can be taken and no one is the wiser. Well until someone speaks up about getting a replica coin. I am so sorry that happened to you. But like AG it makes me wonder if my "real" coins are the ones traveling still! Quote Link to comment

+larry739
I just had the same thing happen to me on one of my Kansas Sunshine micro geocoins. Number 20. It happened sometime in the last three weeks near Colby Kansas. Check out TB14A20 if you want to see what I did about it. Quote Link to comment
+Mauison
I believe that happened to a Moun10Bike coin a while ago. Someone made a photocopy of it, glued it to a washer, put it in a coin case and released it back into the wild. Quote Link to comment

+CachingCoins
The coin involved in this case was CCCooperAgency. Go figure?! I thought it was a pretty coin & I liked the icon, but it's no where near one of the more valuable coins out there! It can probably even still be bought for a reasonable price. I'm not going to try & figure out the motive. It doesn't make sense. I wanted to try to ask a question as tackfully as possible. Those of you who release the replica coins, do you include a picture of the real coin? I've put on the bug pages that this is a real coin. If I put a picture of a real coin would it really help? +islander1988
The coin involved in this case was CCCooperAgency. +whitebear
Sorry this happened to you ,that is just low. I know you do a great job preparing your coins with precautions and I now use a similar technique after seeing yours.Hope this is just an isolated occasion. Quote Link to comment
+DiS02
When my & my group pick up TBs or geocoins & go to track them we like to see pics of the items so we can compare them. I realize not all people have the capabilities like highspeed to upload pics or the digi camera or even the extra cash to get a reg film developed so wording in the trackables area 'this is a real metal coin' or 'this is a bunch of washers I strung together that want to go to Washing'tonia' helps us figure out if something is amiss. Pics & added descripts are good IONSHO, I'm more likely to email someone if there seems to be a problem & can be easily figured out. Food for thought & more knowledge added to my mind for when I do my trackables. Quote Link to comment
+Billy Goatee
Its kinda dissapointing. I had the same thing happen with a wjtb. It just isn't the same when you get a laminated copy... Quote Link to comment

Is there a way to set up a database so that when a reverse alchemsit reaction occurs (metal into laminate), the owner can post the coin, the location, and the last five users? Perhaps we can start narrowing down where this is happening and who is doing it. (Though perhaps the thief/thieves aren't even logging them.) Quote Link to comment

I won it at Freakmanhere's Meet, Greet and eat pizza event raffle. Will move it along. How do you "WIN" someone else's Traveling Geocoin?? Isnt that like "Winning" someone else's Travel Bug?? +SUp3rFM & Cruella
Wow Sandy... That's so sad. Why do people do things like that? As you stated, your coins are already drilled and have a couple of tags... I have some of your coins to release. If you want, I'll take a picture of them. regards Quote Link to comment
+CachingCoins
I'm going to start putting pictures on the pages! I just got an e-mail from someone that thinks one of my coins has been replaced with a fake. They described it, but I can't remember what it looks like. Soooooo sad the memory failing as I get older! I have to take pictures now, so "I" will remember what they look like. Does anyone have a picture of the Wales coin I could look at?! I did a search & the pictures don't still show up. +cimawr
Does anyone have a picture of the Wales coin I could look at?! Do an eBay search - you'll find pictures. That's assuming you mean the coin in the shape of a castle (square with battlements on the top edge), Ddraig Goch on the obverse, "Cymru-Wales" above it, "Y Ddraig Goch" below, and a daffodil on the reverse, flanked by leeks with the three feathers in the lower corners, "St David's Day" on the top, "1st March 2006" on the bottom. +CachingCoins
Thanks for help with the picture. Now I have another dilemma. When I put a picture of the coin on the coin page, it gets put behind the picture of the map that I use on most of my pages. I've looked through the forums & the frequently asked questions & can't find the help I need. Some of you have really awesome coin pages. How do I do that? If you don't mind me copying. Have you ever done any html coding? if not I can shoot you a "template". Basically you use tags <instructions that go in between these arrows > to tell teh page where to put what. So for a picture the tag is <img src=" URL of you picture"> then put <br> or <p>to start a new line. <center> to get it in teh middle </center> Upload your desired picture ( copyright free one ) to a log on the coin page and then copy the URL of teh picture once it's uploaded - i got a wales silve pic if you need one. hope that helped Quote Link to comment
