Experiment: 60cx + entire US metroguide v8 autoroute .img

Recommended Posts

I've been using a 1gb card and so never tried to stuff the entire US of autoroute-hacked MG on it. Picked up a 2gb card and so I decided to play with it.

The total MGNA v8 mapset with the autorouting hacks takes ~1.8gb. I don't know how big CN v8 is, but I think CN v8 NT is closer to 1gb.

For storage purposes I 7zipped it down to just over a gig:

Notes:

* it took a couple of hours to index the maps on my old 1gHz PC.

* The first time I started the 60cx with the 1.8gb .img on it it took about 60secs and I thought the unit had locked up.

* subsequent power-ons took a normal amount of time (a few seconds)

* autoroutes correctly to anywhere in the US that I have attempted.

Individual MG-autorouted states I have done so far.

* CA123mb

* TX 120mb

* MO 53mb

* NM 25mb

* OK 38MB

* OR 36MB

* CO 30MB

* AZ 29MB

* LA 29mb

* AR 27mb

* KS 27MB

* NE 17MB

* UT 15MB

* NV 12MB

I pre-rolled these because I wanted to be able to mix/match "precompiled" .img files at will. This weekend I'll use sendmap to load up two bordering states to see if it will route across the .img boundaries. I suspect it will not.

BTW, I really like the 60cx (just got it a week or so ago). The batts seem to last longer than any other garmin I've owned. Perhaps the GPSr can go/stay into battery-save mode longer because it gets the satt locks so easily? And I really like the dedicated Find button. Two presses and I'm on the Recents Finds, which is what I use most often. I use it in the car and on foot, and use the ForeTrex 201 on the geo-thumper, strapped to the handbars.

Enough rambling. Must sleep before I end up with keyboard marks on my face.
