Why can't post a poll?

Hi all,

I'm an Italian geocacher and visiting my country forum in countries ones, I was so disappointed to see we are the last among all countries, watching on number of topics/replies.

I then was wondering to post a poll to see how many are Italian geocachers and from which region they come... but I wasn't able to post any poll! The poll button isn't active in "Italy geocachers" forum so I wish to ask the community how can I launch a poll...

Thanks to all,

Caterpirla

See this post in the Frequently Asked Questions thread that's pinned at the top of the "Getting Started" forum. The poll feature has been disabled in the Groundspeak Forums for anyone other than admins.

I encourage you to start a thread asking Italian geocachers to post replies stating their region. But, you will need to count the votes yourself.

Well... it's a little bit boring to count votes one by one...

I think anyone will ever know how many Italian geocachers are out there.

BTW, I'm wondering why poll feature has been turned off for all forums: it has been misused by someone before?

Cheers,

Caterpirla from Bari, Italy

Did you actually read the FAQ that Keystone linked?

Ok ok I'm sorry, I apologize... I just read the questions about polls.

I understand polls are misused and abused, nevertheless I think they are a good and straight way to collect opinions and data (eg. count how many geocachers are in Italy subdivided by regions).

I even understand that the moderators wants to keep the garbage out, but don't you think it's a limit to the expression of people banning ALL polls? I think moderator's job could be deleting duplicated or silly (for who anyway??) polls...

At this point you could give the possibility for "common" users to promote some "sensing" polls asking moderators to post them... If its aims are high enough, obviuosly :D

Yes, Caterpirla --the polls were overused by people for trivial questions, and that is why they were locked.

You really should consider doing waht Keystone suggested and begin a thread asking Italian geocachers to post replies stating their region.

We have similar threads in our Midwest forum and they have allowed us to get to know cachers from our region a little better. The thread has advantages a mere poll does not, as folks aren't locked into narrow categories for answers that may not quite fit.

Thanks for the hints Neos2, I've already opened a thread in "Italian speaking" forum, I hope this could help my enquiry.

But I still think polls are useful, and that the intelligence of human beings is high enough to let them distinguish good things from garbage...

Ad maiora! :D

Every poll that would be killed by a moderator would generate yet another poll asking "Do you think it was fair that my poll was removed?". I remember back when anyone could create a poll. We're better off without them.

Ok, ok... I give up...

I'm a newbie here, if you all say that it's better without polls, well... that's it!

Better luck next time...

Arrivederci!

I disagree.

Imagine this poll:

What's your favorite kind of cache?

A. Traditional at a scenic spot

B. Crafty puzzle

C. Lame micro

Given the choices, people would naturally vote heavily for A & B. Certain posters would then use this poll as proof that all micros should be banned. Great angst follows. Edited by sbell111

Well sbell111... how I just said in a post before, the (medium) human beings are intelligent enough to choose amongst garbage.

If I'm not so stupid I'll never vote that poll... simply I'll ignore it.

Saying that polls are at risk of stupidity or misuse and for this reason they must be all banned, is like saying that politicians are all bad people and for this reason popular vote is useless... I think we can simply use our brains and choose... to vote or not. Not certainly prevent voting itself.

Cheers,

CatP

Not on US web forums... in effects.

That's exactly my point. The averagely intelligent human being would look at the choices and choose the one that they thought was best. It just so happens that the poll skewed the options sufficiently to allow a predetermined outcome. These results would then be used to argue for a position that the results don't actually prove.
If I'm not so stupid I'll never vote that poll... simply I'll ignore it.
Perhaps you would, but the average person wouldn't. People are predisposed to provide meaningless answers to meaningless questions.

Wow.. you have an high opinion of your similar.

Listen, I don't wanto to make a symposium on polls, I don't want to convince anyone that polls are absolutely true, nor this forum must absolutely reactivate them.

I think there have to be offered as more tools as possible to people, to users. Polls are a powerful, yet overusable tool, and IMHO banning them from forums reduces the people's freedom of expression.

In THIS forum polls are banned? Ok, that's it. It's a pity, indeed.

If you want to hear me say: "Oh, you're right, people's stupid, polls are stupid, they all give false results", well forget it.

For me choice = freedom. More choice = more democracy. Less choice = less democracy.

Hope this neverending discussion could reach an end... Everyone of us keeping its own opinion.

Bye

I never said that people were stupid. What I was trying to say is that people use polls to push their agenda. If you carefully craft the poll, it gives you the result that you are looking for.
For me choice = freedom. More choice = more democracy. Less choice = less democracy.
If you are not for polls, then you are for terrorism. A vote against polls is a vote for the enemy.

What?? Now it's me against polls??? Listen, maybe misunderstandings are because of I'm not English mother language... but now we are going straight towards the big nothing...

I give up this mess...
