Splinterheads - new movie has geocaching in it!

Rachael Taylor played the NSA beauty in the Transformers movie. Now she is geocaching!

 

Anybody know where these locations are? The meadow could be anywhere but the swimming hole might be familiar to someone.

 

Good luck to this movie. The director is an old friend of mine. I was out of touch, so just finding out that he is a successful director AND he put GEOCACHING in his second movie is very exciting!

The screening is actually after GWVI is officially over (6:30PM). The question is whether a geocacher would rather sit through a movie or join other cachers on cache runs or for after-events. I was seriously thinking about watching the movie, but now I'm leaning toward hitting one of the two after-events that are on my way back to Chattanooga. Who knows... I may be sick of talking to other geocachers by then.

My husband and I went to the viewing of the movie but left after about 20 minutes because we couldn't stand to sit through the language. About 8 other people left before us. Every other word was either cussing or vulgar. I realize that you can't get away from cussing but this was overkill and there was no call for it. We too left after just a few minutes. Cussing it self does not offend me but this movie had not just cussing but vulgarity. I was very disappointed in the premiere and will also contact the producers.

I cannot believe GeoCaching.com is allowing the use of their logo and name to help promote a movie of this nature.

Geocaching is a family and fun sport and I do not think it promotes language or activities of this nature.

I truly hope no one that knows me (because anyone that knows me knows I cache) goes to see this movie. I would hate to think they would associate myself with this movie.

I feel the same as Smiling in Acworth. I sat through the whole film thinking it would get better, but it didn't. I, too, don't want to be associated with the film as a cacher who may talk like that.

I thought the movie was hilarious! I knew going in from the many warnings we received that there was strong language in the film, but it doesn't bother me as I am prolly in the age niche they are going for: Generation MTV that has an appreciation for 'American Pie', 'Superbad', Kevin Smith flicks, etc....

 

I can't wait for this to come out in the theaters, I will be more than willing to see it again (and pay this time!).

Although there is some cussing, I think it is taking it a bit far to say that every other word was cussing or vulgar. And they did warn us that there would be some strong language used.

Count me in the group that enjoyed the movie. Amazing Steve and Wyoming stole the show towards the end. I cringed at the magnetic cache on a wooden swing set. The producer's were very clear about the adult-oriented language in the film. I respect the fact that it made some viewers uncomfortable though. I'm looking forward to the theatrical release. I think general audiences will ignore the caching scenes. its still a pretty good indie romantic comedy.

I look forward to seeing this film. My friend worked on set and has been to a screening and gave it a great review. I'd like to add that I am an avid geocacher with a potty mouth and can be quite vulgar but I always pay attention to the movies rating. Maybe the people who walked out should try it sometime.

I know I had an itch to go caching after watching. Then again, it doesn't take so much as my dog waking up for me to want to get out there and hunt!!!

This must mean the DVD has come out. I knew it was sometime in February. Thanks for the reminder, I am definitely going to get a copy. I was impressed with all the trailers I've seen from the movie.

 

That being said, I don't think many people are ever going to see it. They obviously were unable to secure any significant theater distribution. Box offfice mojo page for Splinterheads So now this is essentially a direct to DVD movie. I don't know much about the industry, but this generally isn't good. I've had to buy my daughter a few direct to DVD movies over the years, and some of them do show up on TV on like the USA network. Who knows, maybe Splinterheads will go on to develop a cult following.

I get Redbox new release notices too, but haven't noticed anything there. Also, I don't see it at the Family Video website, which is a major, although regional, rental store.

Amazon shows it as a release date of February 16th, which makes sense since its a tuesday, new releases always come out on tuesdays. I also have it in my queue so we'll see when it gets sent out.

Double ouch!! a 27% rating at rottentomatos.com I'll bet that was a factor at it only being shown in 3 theaters. Napoleon Dynamite, it's not.

 

Don't get me wrong though, I'm buying this thing. Probably the Geoswag.com version. Hopefully they'll do good in the rental/video sales market. At least good enough to pay Leah Thompson for her appearance.

 

I didn't previously read all the responses to this particular bumped thread (one of many on the movie). Vulgar language? I'm in.

Splinterheads just doesn't have the quality of cinema that we are used to today.

It may have done well in the 70's technology, maybe even the 80's but not now

To me it doesn't have to have amazing graphics and technology to be good movie. I've seen some amazing movies that were filmed with mediocre technology at best. Everyone gushed about how great Avatar was, and while I agree the graphics were amazing especially in 3D, I though the story itself was tired and predictable. Dances with Wolves meets Fern Gully. I've got this one in my queue hoping it will be entertaining.

I agree. A great story, plot and acting always trumps special effects. There are plenty of "old" movies that are infinitely better than a lot of the trash that Hollywood puts out today.

I believe I can see it available for rental at Blockbuster.com, but I can't find it available for rental in any stores. I live in Western New York, but I tried zip codes I knew off the top of my head (from Geocaching, of course), and it came up as not being in any stores in New Jersey, or Eastern Pa. either. So I don't know what's going on there, whether you have to rent it online from Blockbuster.com or what.

 

Yep, the Geoswag.com version for $20 comes with a travel tag, trackable at Geocaching.com. These things seem to be all the rage on their website, sort of custom TB dog tags, with animals or Flags of nations. Which is all news to me, never saw one before.

The movie was filmed in New York State, I believe on Long Island. Galaxy11 is a 2007 account with almost all their finds in New York. Probably someone connected with the movie, and could have had a name change to Galaxy11 at some point. The plain old Galaxy account is definitely promoting the movie, and their caches hidden to promote the movie have permission from Groundspeak for the agenda. The 2003 join date is quite strange, but maybe TPTB hooked them up with that.

Funny, I was in a Blockbuster on Friday, Feb. 19th. I had the clerk look it up. She said it was being released on Tues. Feb 23rd (obviously Tues. Feb 16th for purchase). She said they would probably have it in, or I could order it. And it does show up as being available for mailorder at Blockbuster.com I plan on buying the Geoswag.com version myself, but I just checked this out.

 

I do remember a few years ago ordering an extremely obscure movie (much more obscure than Splinterheads), and having it delivered to the local Blockbuster.

 

Oh, and it definitely did not show up in the February 23rd new releases email I receive from Redbox, not that I expected it too.

I got my copy in the mail yesterday from Netflix, haven't watched it yet though, My wife voted to watch American Idol last night. Even though it was a one to one vote, somehow her vote carried more weight.

Haha, very true. Well I watched the movie last night, definitely thought it was entertaining. It's obviously marketed towards the 18-35 crowd, and some may be turned off by the language. I myself cuss like a sailor (maybe because I used to be one) so no worries there. Of course the geocaching info was a little off, for example she has a gps and is looking for a cache, they get to a field and spread out and look for it. But they definitely got the spirit of geocaching captured. While it wasn't the best movie I've seen in the past year, I felt it was way better than some of the turds I've paid 9.50 to go see in the theater. Definitely worth the rent!

 

Oh, and Netflix has it, if you're not a member they offer a two week trial, sign up for the trial and get the movie, then just cancel the membership!

I dunno know there Mr. Knight. A brand new release currently available for purchase or for rental at Netflix and other places being shown on the internet for free sounds kind of fishy to me. But I have no recollection of what your link was to know for sure.

 

Then again, I've never figured out how Limewire is legal all these years. I just know my daughter keeps me busy with Malware and Viruses received from using it.

Limewire is legal, and there are lots of legal uses for it. Many users also choose to use it for illegal purposes (ie distributing copyrighted materials without permission).

 

To keep this on-topic: I've put Splinterheads on my Netflix list and look forward to seeing it. But I still haven't had time to watch the movie they sent me several months ago, so it might be a while before I get around to posting a review!
