+hydnsek
Calling all cachers: Groundspeak's 8th annual CITO weekend is April 24-25, and we hope to have CITO events scheduled across the region then, so everyone can attend one in their area. The more we volunteer to help our parks, the more support we'll get for geocaching from the land managers. Plus, giving back to the parks and helping the environment just feels good, doesn't it? Thanks to the folks who've already set up events across Washington for CITO weekend: Saturday, April 24 Richland Parks CITO - South Central WA Chapter (Richland) - meandbrea There's Trash in Them Thar Hills! - Inland Empire Chapter (Spokane) Jenkins Creek Park CITO - Puget Sound Chapter (Covington) - Dwoodford Discovery Park CITO - Puget Sound Chapter (Seattle) - rodgowdy - pending Heads up! I have a request from King County Parks for a CITO in the Maple Valley area on Saturday, April 24th. This would be an ivy pull in the Lake Desire / Spring Lake area. KCP has been very supportive of geocaching, and we have several caches (land and water) in this area - who would like to volunteer to sponsor this CITO event and help them out? Edit to add: Thanks to WellJointed for volunteering to host the Lake Desire / Spring Lake CITO! Of course, CITO events aren't limited to Earth Day weekend - we encourage you to talk to your local parks and organize a CITO anytime during the year that it will help them. Parks at every level - city, county, state, federal - can benefit from a CITO event. And despite the name, CITO (Cache In, Trash Out) isn't limited to picking up trash and debris. It can include invasive-plant removal, native plant restoration, even trail-building - basically, whatever type of volunteer work party will help the park. CITO events are easy to host. Just like the movie "Field of Dreams," if you build it, they will come. Contact a park near you and ask if they could benefit from a volunteer work party. Find out what kind of work they need done, and determine a mutually agreeable date and time. Usually 2-3 hours on a weekend are all you need. Publish the CITO event, and people will start signing up. You might want to provide some drinks or snacks, and some geo-goodies to give away as prizes (fellow cachers, Groundspeak, and/or WSGA often can often help with that). So, go to it - let's celebrate our many great parks in 2010 by showing them some love! Edited March 31, 2010 by hydnsek Quote Link to comment

+hydnsek
*bump* The official CITO weekend has come and gone - thanks to everyone who helped at the six CITOs around the state! Of course, CITO events can happen anytime, and I'd like to encourage folks to come out on June 5 and support the CITO event being sponsored by w1370 down near Mount St Helens. From his description and photos, it looks like a really worthy cause. Plus, I'm looking for carpool buddies for the trip down (from Bellevue area), so lemme know if you're going.
