DaveD
I was the project director for the 1992 survey of the Capitol. I have a very fond memory of myself and another NGS employee lying on our bellies at 1 a.m. one morning, on the floor of the Capitol beneath the rotunda with a piece of string determining the intersection point of the 20 points of the Center of the Crypt (which was where Washington was supposed to be buried), and both of us thinking -- How awesome is this! If you look on the NGS web site under "Products and Services" and then under "Pulbication available on line" you can find the article I wrote about that project -- "Where Freedom Stands." Well yes, but remember (a) so many of the really cool ones are out-of-bounds, e.g. the many on the White House grounds, and ( there has been so much sprawl hereabouts that I suspect the DC area has lost proportionately more benchmarks than many other areas. +seventhings
ArtMan is right on re hunting in and around DC. The environment is spectacular as are many of the marks themselves. But access is often restricted and the find rate is low (because the development and renovation rates are high.) Quote Link to comment
