London Caches

We'll be spending a week in London this month. Being tourists, we will be doing touristy things. So while we'd like to find a few caches along the way, we don't want to spend our entire holiday with our eyes on the ground, poking around in the shrubbery etc. I'm hoping someone can suggest a handful of comparatively easy caches hidden in London. We'll be staying in the West End, no automobile, heading for all the usual places tourists visit. We also will take a couple of day trips by train, possible to Hampton Court and Dover Castle...tourist stuff. (If anyone wants to suggest a couple of restaurants or pubs where tourists usually don't go that will be a nice bonus.)

I think a walk along the South bank of the Thames is quite nice for an evening stroll, and there are a few caches (including one of mine !) along the way.

Start at The South Bank Lion and walk East towards The Golden Hinde

There are also plenty of places to eat and drink and some places of historical interest along the way.

 

Edit to add:

 

Be prepared for mostly micros or nanos in London, there are only a few larger caches. Also In London not having a car is no disadvantage.

If you're on the south side of the Thames then The Winchester Geese is worth a visit (also, it's a proper cache, albeit a small one, rather than a micro/nano)

In Central London a car is probably more of a hindrance than a help. Get yourself a copy of the London A-Z and you'll find that several short Tube journeys are quicker on foot, and that walking means you get to see more of London.

 

There are loads of caches in central London although most are micros and nanos, as might be expected. In many cases the problems relate more to having muggles around than the difficulty in finding the cache.

 

Depending on just when you're caching you might find "R E HEDGES" and "Under the Boardwalk" interesting (there are more challenging to reach, the latter can only sensibly be attempted at low tide). Both are slightly further east, in the area of London's financial district (known as The City). The City is worth a look around, there are some magnificent buildings around there and several caches to choose from as well. The easiest Tube station to start from would be Bank or, if you're using the District Line, either Mansion House or Cannon Street.

If you go east, over to the City of London, to visit St Paul's Cathedral you might enjoy a visit to the Virtual cache "16th Century Pub" but please note that if you want a pint you'll have to visit on a weekday, it's closed over the weekends. Very nearby is the microcache at "St Etheldreda's church" and also "Last Delivery" which is "the most visited cache in the UK". The latter is a real box that will take trackables but, looking at the most recent logs, it seems that quite a few have gone missing from it.

I can second the suggestion of the South Bank. We had a lot of laughs doing The Arts in the 1970s along there.
