Unusual coin activity

I just retrieved a GC from a cache and it's a copy. Someone has taken the code from a coin they have kept but made a copy out of wood (which is pretty cool TBH).

However packaged in with the 'coin' is another token with 7 GC codes on the back saying 'Icon anyone?' and a username. This seems to refer to 7 other GC's that are similar copies. Has anyone else come across this sort of thing? What's your opinion on it?

It's not allowed and if geocaching.com catch up with those coins they'll likely lock them.

You must see a geocoin to have the right to log it.

Its one thing to have a proxy sent out(maybe not by the letter of the law but is excepted in many circles) Its quite another to attach a set of GC numbers from other coins.

People send out proxies all the time and log them as such on there mission statement. They want to have it travel but don't want the risk of loosing the coin. Like i said this may not be completely in line with the rules but is done often. Though many disagree with it and rather find an actual coin and not a copy or picture of the coin. Some times a proxy is put in place of an actual coin by someone who has stolen the coin. Which is why the owner should have it marked on the coin's page that it is a proxy. So if a proxy is found and not noted then the coin may have been stolen.

You may want to check with the owner of the "wooden" copy and see if it was their intent to send out a proxy. It is possible someone took their coin out of circulation and made a proxy to take its place. If they did release the proxy just move it like any other traveler.

As for the list of other tracking codes..... toss it in the trash and maybe email the owners giving them a warning that the tracking numbers are traveling in a different path than the geocoins. That's not allowed and will result in the trackability of those coins to be rescinded. They may wish to delete those logs that seem a little weird.

Take the slip of paper, with the codes on it, out of the package before you release it, or the owner risks having ALL of those trackables locked for virtual logging, not just the one copy coin. You could mention this thread to them if you wish to explain what you are doing. We aren't even sure the owner is the one who added that to the package. Probably, but who knows.

It seems pretty likely that they are. The trackables all belong to the same person (the one with the copy coin and it has their name on it.

I would still remove it and send them a link to this thread as explanation that you are doing it to prevent all of the coin pages from being locked. A link should be explanation enough.

Virtual logging, allowing someone to log something they have not seen in person, or held in their hand, is considered abuse of the system, and is not what trackables are about, and is just cause for locking a trackable page. Cachers log seeing the item. Not just seeing the tracking number. If that were the purpose, why would people go through the trouble of minting a beautiful coin to show to others?

So, if I have come across something like this, how do I report the 'coin' to Groundspeak/geocaching.com? We have been caching for a while and feel like this is cheating. We want and expect to find the trackable, not just a picture of the trackable that the "owner" has placed repeatedly in the same cache...

The proxy is allowed. Sometimes it is a replacement for a lost geocoin. Like a replacement TB Tag. It's the slip of paper with the additional tracking numbers that is taboo. If you spot something like this, it can be reported by sending a link to me, your local reviewer, or contact @ geocaching dot com. You don't need to report the proxies, just the virtual logging.
