LightSquared and impact to GPS

Recommended Posts

The base stations of the LightSquared network will transmit signals in a radio band immediately adjacent to the GPS frequencies. The GPS community is concerned that LightSquared's ground-based transmissions may overpower the relatively weak GPS signal from space. Although LightSquared will operate in its own radio band, that band is so close to the GPS signals that many GPS devices could pick up the stronger LightSquared signal and become overloaded or jammed.

Oh my.

I just got a brand new GPS. I dont want to spend $$$ more! I say no to this 4G LLE thingy! We have enough broadband connectivity and we don't need another company to unleash their geocaching wrecking things!

Ok, maybe I was overreacting a little. Just venting. :)

Oh, and you might want to look at Lightsquared's website.

Oh yeah -- and you have to LOVE this quote from Genachowski on the main page of their site:

WHAT THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) IS SAYING

"I was pleased to learn of the formation of LightSquared today. This new nationwide 4G wireless broadband network represents more than $7 billion of new investment, with the potential to create more than 100,000 new private-sector jobs within five years. Today’s announcement shows that FCC policies are helping grow the U.S. economy by catalyzing investment and job creation." Julius Genachowski, Chairman, FCC

Another way to read that might be "I was pleased to learn of the formation of LightSquared today. If they ever want to pull a fast one with inexpensive spectrum use later on down the road, you can be sure we'll be there to rubber stamp that request for use deviation."
