2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
In the other thread, Bruce S. stated one of the differences between Geocaching and Benchmarking is being the GC benchmark database is static, we benchmarkers have to go farther afield to attempt recoveries on more and more marks. While with Geocaches someone is always placing more for us to find relatively close by. So, just how Far and Wide have you gone to find these little disks? Here is how Far and Wide we have gone to find some disks. How far do you go to find caches? We have found some almost everywhere we have found benchmarks. And we seem to take at least 2 shots of each mark we find plus if it is Tri-station, one more of each RM and a view shot of each. We do not normally take pictures at caches unless we have a TB/GC to move along or some special cool scenery shot. So, just how many pictures have you taken? I will accept rough estimates. Shirley~ -------------------------------- Hmm, that one is hard to answer. I took nine shots of this Tri-station Saturday, but do average 2-3 per standard benchmark. +Harry Dolphin
Okay. I'm 27th on GC with logs. That means I've uploaded a few thousand photos. How far have I travelled for a benchmark? 20 miles when I figure out that Somerset County benchmarks (SC) counted for a Flush in the benchmark contest. Even further for the Straight Flush. Danged Q was missing in PA! Mostly, I look for interesting ones. Older ones. Not found in a while. Updating the database is a great idea! But I doubt that I'd look for the newer ones. I do go on geocaching vacations, and tie in benchmarking. Especially to color in new counties. But that is related to the geocaching trip. Last year, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. This year, there are counties in Michigan and Wisconsin that are calling to me! I am allowed a certain leeway. "Okay. Just don't take too long!" (Dolphin climbs on a rock ledge near the highway, disturbs a feral cat, and finds a benchmark in Maine!) But, I would say that I've run out of interesting benchmarks to find locally But I will keep on trying! Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania Delaware, Maryland, D of C, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio. Onward to Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota??? We'll see what I can find... Quote Link to comment
+Ashallond
I have benchmarks from Oklahoma through Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Washington DC. Might have one in Indiana or Nevada, but I'm not sure right now. Quote Link to comment
