"Like" Button to Cache Logs

What I really like about geocaching besides great cache pages and hides are the great logs that cachers post.

As I read them, I really feel then need to say "thank you" to the cacher for writing a good review of the cache. This "good" review could explain the great things about the cache or the shortcomings of the cache. I know I could send a message to the cacher but that usually takes a few more steps.

I would like to see a so-called "Like" button on the logs so that we could tell them quickly that it was good. I know we would be pulling a page out of the FB structure but this is a social site with social tendencies.

It gives the cache page an extra level by helping other cachers who review the logs more meaning to a cache and possibly extend the life of the cache (revising the cache to be better from good honest reviews).

I know we have a Favorite system in place for the cache itself but those are limited and not many people use that because of the limitation. This is a different aspect.

I would even take it a step further and add an icon to the log header of how many "likes" are in the logs.

Thanks for listening!

It is not even a FB phenom for "liking" reviews. It is a societal phenom... almost every page with blogs, reviews, rants.....has a "Was this review helpful?"

Because "TFTC!" really does not help a cacher reading the logs with a find. Cachers would not have to scroll through lame logs (that seem to be the norm lately) to get meaningful advice.

Only a "Yes" or check mark for an answer to "Was this review helpful?" would be appropriate. It is common sense that "TFTC!" is not helpful.

This is how I see it...if you "dislike" this option...don't use it. Just like I "dislike" micros...I ignore them.

The online log serves a number of purposes, for 3 different users, listed below in the order of their importance (obviously, my opinion):

1) the cache seeker - it's a record of their experience, it increments find count, it's the place for them to record as much or as little as they wish about the caching experience

2) the cache owner - it provides info: cache is there, may be missing, may need repair, conditions have changed, thanks from the seeker for placing the hide etc

3) for the community - it provides info: cache is there, may be missing, great, not so great, plus the log may provide some entertainment for readers

"Like" for logs elevates the least of the purposes, entertainment for readers.

Can't say as I like the idea.

However, for those who list that as 3,1,2, it would be the primary purpose. As you say it's 'just' your opinion - and it isn't necessarily right.

Geocaching.com is a listing service and not a community portal. Isonzo Karst has the order correct and opinion doesn't change that fact.

Geocaching.com being a listing service doesn't have the same functionality that a community portal site like Facebook has. One of the major differences is that on Facebook to be able to read and to LIKE someone's posts you have to be in their friends list. Geocaching.com now links with Facebook and from what I understand you can post your logs to Facebook. Why don't you just post your Geocaching logs to Facebook and allow your Facebook friends to like your logs? If don't want to bother your non-geocaching friends with your logs you can always set a Geocaching friends list in Facebook and then use the inline audience selector to select that list when you post your log to your timeline.

When you grab a coin from a cache it automatically goes to your inventory but unless it says specifically that you can keep it you should drop it in another cache. I assume that every coin that I find in a cache is a traveler and have never looked whether it was marked collectible or not. MOST activated coins that you find out in the wild are there to travel and not to be added to someone's collection unless it says on the coins page specifically that you may keep it if you want. If there is any question at all contact the coin owner. I have found one activated coin that the page said it could be kept and one that the owner said if you like it he would trade it for one of yours out of about 500 trackables that I have moved. The desigination of collectible on the page is basically meaningless because different people understand it different ways.

+1 - I really, really, really wish Groundspeak would sort this, but for the sake of a very, very, VERY small number of coins which truely are designated as collectible they seem to see fit to confuse and annoy everyone else with this STUPID option! I wish they would stop trying to develop new features, and fix the issues they have got right now!

We really need a like button on some of these comments...lol!

I agree. I also think it would go a long way in reducing the "lame logs" tftc etc. It also might serve as an encouragement and an additional "feel good" to the cache owner. It might even inspire others to actually hide some to see the cudos on their own. It might also inspire more creative cache hides in an attempt to get some of those accolades.
