Starting the ADVENTURE?

A common recommendation for beginners is to stick with small small.gif size, regular regular.gif size, and large large.gif size caches. Until you're more experienced, avoid micro micro.gif size caches, some of which are smaller than most beginners can imagine (sometimes called "nanos"). Save those for later, after you have some experience.

Also, stick with caches that have a difficulty rating of no more than 2 stars stars2.gif. Save the more difficult ones for later. You may also want to choose caches with easy terrain ratings. (The difficulty rating tells you how hard it is to find the cache once you get there. The terrain rating tells you how hard it is to get there.) And it is often best to start with traditional 2.gif caches, which will be at the published coordinates. Multi-caches 3.gif or mystery/puzzle caches 8.gif or other cache types can require more work just to figure out where the container is located.

Under ideal conditions, a consumer GPSr will be accurate to about 3m (10ft). That applies both to your device, and to the cache owner’s device, so you may find the container 15-20ft from ground zero under ideal conditions. Under less than ideal conditions, both GPSr readings can be much less accurate. Once you get within that distance of ground zero, put your device away and look around for places where a container could be hidden.

Go ahead and read the cache's additional hints (if provided), and read the past logs and look at any photos in the cache's image gallery. They may help you understand what you're looking for, and how/where it may be hidden. It may also help to look at some of the cache containers available online. For example, check out the cache containers sold by Groundspeak. Also, take a look at the Pictures - Cool Cache Containers (CCC's) thread in the forums.

Welcome to the addiction.

My advice, stay on the trail longer than you might think you need to. I've started bushwhacking to the cache only to find the trail circled back around. 'Oh look, here's the same trail I just left. Oops!"

I suggest you take up BlueDeuce's advice. He is wise and offers excellent counsel.

Welcome!

Next to placing your geocaching nickname (and date) on the log in the cache, you should also log the cache on this website with a found log.

Write in your log something about

- the location (have you been there before, did you like the scenery etc.)

- how you got there (did you have a nice walk or was it an easy grab where you didn't even need to leave the car)

- if anything happened on your way over there ( saw a deer, met other geocachers, lost my sunglasses etc.)

- the cache (easy/difficult to find , nice big one where you could swap some goodies, or a well camouflaged one etc.)

- say thank you to the cache owner (CO) by ending your log with TFTC! (this means thanks for the cache)

- and if you find trackables (travelbugs, coins that have the text "track me on geocaching.com" noted somewhere) do not forget to write in your log that you took them. But do not note the number in your log! This number is unique and you should use it to log the trackable on this website as well.

Some other things you might like to know:

-making photo's! If you go out geocaching take your camera with you, every CO and trackable owner loves to see photos with logs! BUT: never place spoilers. Spoilers are photos or sentences in your log that spoil the surprise for other cachers. So do not place a photo of the cache online, unless you are sure this is okay with the cache owner.

-bring goodies to exchange. Geocachers like to find real treasures, so if you take something from a cache, you should put something into it as well (of at least equal value) And if the cache is empty and you have some goodies to spare, it's very nice if you place something.

- if you didn't find the cache, you can log a "not found". If several cachers weren't able to find it, it can trigger the cache owner to check whether the cache is still there.

- make sure other people, which we call muggles, do not see you finding the cache. People that don't know the game might take or destroy the geocache or what is inside. So if there are people near the cache, just wait till they are gone or come back another time.

Have fun!

This game is played all over the world, so greetings from the Netherlands as well!
