Feature request: "Like" cache log / images etc.

Hi Geocaching.com

I have for some time thought of asking you if a Facebook "like-feature" could get to implemented?

As a geocache owner, you sometimes receive great / funny logs on your cache listing. I think that a "like" feature would be a great add-on to the website. This way you can express that you like the logs you read, both on own and others geocache logs. This way we can also encourage new cachers to write better logs and not just "TFTC" or even shorter logs like "."

It could even be a way to give the writer of good logs a way to collect points and earn a "writers medal" :D

I searched for this request at the Geocaching forum but didn't get relevant hits, I therefore hope that this request has not been answered / denied to much already B)

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure this has been requested before, but it's never gotten off the ground. I like the idea myself...I'd go a step further, make it where the owner could actually reply to the comment and others could read it. At least on the site...maybe you wouldn't want all those replies included with the recent logs in a GPX file. I think folks would be a little more inclined to post a meaningful log if they occasionally got some feedback and parlay from the owner.

It's not a feature I'd be absolutely mad about, but I think it is worth thinking about.

The geocache page is not Facebook, and it's been made get clear that they aren't forums. If the log is that good, feel free to message the owner. Or use Facebook. Or start a post on the forums. I can see how people want this, but aside from my own opinion, I think the fact that the majority of logs are copy/paste or TFTC there really is no point maybe if that wasn't the case...

It's been suggested before. Personally I didn't like the idea then and I still don't like it.

If you particularly like a cache log why not drop a note to the person who wrote it? In my 2000+ finds I've had that happen twice - once from a cache owner who suggested logs take on a certain theme and who liked my log, and again from a cache owner who enjoyed my "Write Note" log explaining in terms he found quite amusing why I hadn't attempted to climb a pipe covered in wet seaweed in the rain. A note like that means so much more than a "+1" against the log (not least because it takes a little effort to write it) and, to be honest, I really don't see why cache pages need endless feedback. If we allow people to "like" logs then either we reward those who accumulate a lot of points (in which case it's easy to create sock puppets to "like" logs) or they mean nothing, in which case there's no point having them.

Related ideas of allowing replies to logs just invites trouble. The last thing we need is someone posting NA on a log, or a Find note that says the cache is there but in a sorry state, only to end up in a heated exchange with a cache owner who insists on taking anything less than "wonderful hide, great job" as a personal insult.
