Cache page formatting broken?

We are in the midst of rolling out an update.

 

Maybe this is also the reason why I see an annoying yellow large banner that tries to direct the users to the new search (regardless of whether I want to conduct a new search). The banner is also shown if one deliberately switches from the new to the old search.

 

Btw: The cache page format is broken for me too.

Is it the banner that's annoying - or just the colour? Or maybe the size? :rolleyes:

Doesn't surprise me.

 

Switch off the computer, go out and find a cache?

 

By the time you get back home the annoying yellow large banner will probably have vanished, like a bad dream that never happened B)

I believe that the banner will stay with us for weeks.

 

I've just noticed it for the first time.

 

Can't see why anyone would ever find it annoying, with the exception of a tiny minority of serial complainers.

Maybe you use the site in a different way than I do. I have bookmarked some searches - the most important one is the list of newest searches in my province. This is essentially my only way to learn about new caches.

I have also bookmarked the list of own finds and I use to look at this list for a while after having visited some caches to see what then next finders write. I also use very often the "search nearby caches" link - I almost never use map functions.

 

In all these lists now I need to scroll more because the banner consumes space - I have already been unhappy with the redesigned version that added more white space and a large Geocaches. Now it got even worse with the additional banner. One of the worst things about the new search is that it consumes so much space - when the old search moves into that direction, that's not something I appreciate.

 

Moreover the yellow colour and the white text are irritating for my eyes.

 

I guess those who mainly rely on PQs, watchlist mails etc and hardly call search list result pages, it will play a smaller role than if seeing the banner several times per day. Even those who want to know about the changed new search (and can use it - for basic members it's simply unusable) seeing the same message over and over is not that motivating and after a while they will get tired of the message.

Normally such messages can be clicked away once noticed.

 

It's not about being a serial complainer. I need however to admit that my eyes are very sensitive against visual changes and some colours. I appreciate sites like project-gc.com and aj-gps.net with a very simple design only taking functionalty in account and without ever changing fonts, colours, design, places where to click for what etc

For someone like me what Groundspeak is doing throughout the last months is ending up in a lot of stress - I do not know any other web site I use where so much has been changed within a short time and without a single change that involves a positive impact for me.

Typically when people who like modern design find the design of a web site boring and non attractive, I like it.

Provide such a site here, and other people would become those who complain a lot while I would be happy.

Serial complaining about the tiniest of details like this is very unhelpful.

 

Websites and the Internet in general shift and evolve almost constantly and for good reasons.

 

Even as a paying customer I would be embarrassed to complain about something this trivial.

I agree with cezanne. OK, the color of the banner isn't that big a deal for me. :anicute:

 

There's a similar banner on the GC site, on my work PCs (old browsers), warning me I'm being left behind. Such a banner is a leetle reminder that GS plans to remove the old search page, and that soon it will be gone. The new banner on the search page looks like a giant mustard smear of doom. :o

 

I'll probably be able to set up similar pages in the “new search”, bookmark them and use one as my home page as I always have. Perhaps by then there will be an option to view it in a compact table that can be printed. I can't figure out why a “new search” cannot at least display the results in the same old way. I thought of using a PQ Preview, but the Mustard Bar is in there, too. Maybe there's PC software or App to use instead.

 

But I don't know if I'm in the tiny minority of serial complainers or the large one. :anibad:

Serial complaining about the tiniest of details like this is very unhelpful.

Not that I have any interesting in discouraging anyone from complaining, but I think it's hilarious that cezanne jumped up and complained about you complaining about serial complainers.

 

Websites and the Internet in general shift and evolve almost constantly and for good reasons.

The problem is that GS seems to be doing things for no good reason. While complaining about a single instance might be misguided, with the incessant priority of glitz over usefulness seems to justify comment.

 

Even as a paying customer I would be embarrassed to complain about something this trivial.

I guess you aren't a Windows user.

No it isn't. You could become a premium member and then you could be complaining about something that you're actually paying for.

The banner seems fairly useless to me. All it does is take you to the new Search page with no filters configured. What it really needs to do is link to the Search page with the filters pre-configured to match the old search you came from. That is, show you how the new Search can do what you wanted. If it can't perform the same search, then the banner is more misleading than anything and shouldn't be displayed for those old searches at all.

Even as PM it would be - as I do not want to receive e-mail notification about caches. I cannot filter with respect to cache owners and with respect to my interest - and I definitely do not want to have my e-mail account cluttered up with tons of series caches notifications.

Any email client that does any sort of filtering at all allows you to filter based on the From address or the Subject line. Either one would filter notifications into a separate mailbox. You could also get another (free) email account just for geocaching. I have a work email account that I use for most things and a gmail account I use for others, includnig anything related to geocaching. It was easy to set up a filter so that geocaching notifications go into a separate folder. In fact, I also have a filter for logs posted on any of my caches. It works really well and it's free, but I'm sure you find some reason for why it won't work for you.
