Elevation when hiding new cache?

regarding the 1/10 of a mile rule:

Trying to hide a cache today and there were others within 1/10 of a mile but we were at the top of a mountain a mile up and there were none listed up there, but it won't accept my coordinates. Is there any way around this or a way to differentiate elevation?

Thanks!

In general, elevation is not considered when applying the proximity .1 mile guideline.

While you can always contact your local reviewer(s) to see if they might be inclined to grant an exception, guidance from (most) reviewers seems to be that it is unlikely.

Like derektiffany said, exceptions are rather nonexistent in the situation you're describing. The measurements for proximity are done point to point, without any regard for elevation. Kind of a flat earth model, if you will.

If there is some preexisting object (i.e. virtual) on the summit, you might be able to work the location into a Multi or something.

Good luck!

Think about it: the maps on geocaching are 2-dimensional. If you place a cache 0.01 miles away from another cache but more than a mile further up: where does the cache show up on the map or on your gps?

That's probably not the best argument as there could even be 10 or more caches which all have the same header coordinates as long at most one of them has a physical stage there (Whereigos, multi caches, letterbox hybrids, mystery caches, Earthcaches etc).
