+Klemmer
About to go look for a couple benchmarks in Riverside CA area, and I noticed they are both listed as a "Gravity Station Disk". Anyone have any idea what that is, how it is used? Here they are: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=DX3592 http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=DX3593 Quote Link to comment
Z15
Very similar to all the rest. Here are some links for reading. DaveD
The knowledge of local and absolute gravity is a very important function in Geodesy. Determination of accurate heights requires a knowledge of the Earth's gravity field. When a surveyors level their equipment that process is with respect to the local attraction of gravity, which then must be related to our knowledge of the mathematical model for the size and shape of the Earth called the ellipsoid. Look on the NGS web site at: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/GRD/GRAVITY/ABSG.html, and you will get an idea of some of the work currently being done in this area. Quote Link to comment
