Unable To Access Cg

GeckoGeek

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure what's going on. I can't access the CG website via my normal ISP. But when I citrix into work which uses a different ISP, I can. Both resolve the name to the same IP address, so it's not a DNS. Doing a tracert from home it looks like a firewall issue as I'm able to get all the way to CG's firewall

Do you have some kind of program running that pulls down web pages from GC.com? They don't like people doing that. I had the same problem and that is what caused it.

No. I don't even run spinner/plucker or anything else. I will have to try with another machine just to be sure.

There is something going on, there have been plenty of people coming into the IRC chat asking if the site is down. I dunno if somehow gc.com got blacklisted as a spam site, like the email issue with RoadRunner.

I just checked. The problem is woth both of my machines at home. Not only is geocaching.com "out" but all the forums as well. Everything is completely dead. It's all a matter of what ISP your using.

Since I use dial-up (I'm cheap) it's not a block against a specific IP. More like a whole subnet, but the settings are cutting out a lot of people since Worldcom/UUNet covers a lot of territory.

What's your browser?

Lily Pad Central was notified of the problem about 20 minutes ago. Hopefully they will get things back online soon   :D

For future reference, is there a quicker place for paying members to report any connectivity issues? I posted here 5+ hours prior to your message, so it would have sped things up a bit but I had no clue as to where else to report it so I was stuck putting it here and waiting for an admin type to see it.

BTW things do seem normal again. I hope it stays that way.

GeckoGeek, the problem you reported initially appeared to be limited to you. Others, including myself, several other reviewers, and those on the IRC channel, were only seeing slight slowdowns, which appeared to be attributable to the site simply being busy.

At about 7:15 PST the site stopped responding to everyone.

I gave it 10 minutes, then I called one of the head frogs. Only the reviewers have this emergency contact info.

Almost exactly 1 hour later, the site came back up and has been working great ever since. I haven't heard what the problem is. Hopefully Jeremy will post something when he gets a chance.

To answer your question, though, the forums are the best place to report problems. They are monitored pretty consistently by several reviewers. However the frogs in Seattle only work normal business hours (PST). Problems that appear limited in scope generally have to wait until then.

I will note that in this particular case, the tracert info you provided does appear to have been an early warning of bigger problems. Hindsight is always 20/20

GC crashed. Premature presumption is the OCM cachers were probably tring to log their finds all at the same - there were a gaggle of us GCr's out today inspite of the threat of an artic blast from the north.

I thought it was a wet cat crawling on the circuit boards :D

F'n Meow!!!!!!!!!!
