+Totally Benign Sock Puppet Posted January 21, 2005 Share Posted January 21, 2005 Hello Geocachers & Benchmarkers & other GPS enthusiasts, GPS-Fun.com is a website devoted to the games we play with our GPS units, and all of us at GPS-Fun would like to invite anyone and everyone to come by and check out the site. We welcome your comments, additions, and submissions (in the form of letters, reviews, GPS-related stories and pictures, and even your thoughts on gear and such). Most recently, we've added a Benchmark program with 2 related but separate goals: 1) we're giving away benchmarks to people and organizations in the world of GPS recreation that are "Benchmarks" themselves (ie - standards by which all others are measured) 2) we're selling Benchmarks that people can place themselves (!!!) All of the GPS-Fun.com Benchmarks can be logged through our Benchmark Webpage after they have been placed and activated (owners can, to some degree, customize the log-in page for their own benchmark{s}). Benchmarks can be purchased for $9.00 (plus S&H) at the benchmark webpage linked to above. Some of the people and organizations who have (so far) been recognized as "Benchmarks" in the GPS recreation community, and been given one of our benchmarks include: Dave Ulmer Markwell UTAG (the Utah Association of Geocachers) GPSgames.org Today's Cacher Travellertags There are a couple of other people and organizations out there that we are still waiting hopefully to hear from; if you have any suggestions for other people and organizations that you think should be on the list, we would love to hear from you. Below you will see a picture of one of the GPS-Fun.com Benchmarks (please excuse the slight jiggle evident in the picture, the actual benchmarks look awesome). Even if you are not interested in the Benchmark program, please visit the site, and send us an email (using the simple submission forms on the site) to tell us what you think, and what we could do to improve what we hope will be a valuable resource for the entire GPS-recreation community. A sock puppet is an account made on an internet message board by a person who already has an account for the purpose of posting anonymously. Use your own account for posting personal opinions. Posts from known sock puppet accounts will be deleted and both the puppet and actual account may be banned from using the services of Groundspeak. Commercial Postings/Solicitations are not allowed. Commercial content as a direct or indirect (either intentional or non-intentional) attempt to solicit customers through a forum post will be edited or deleted. Notwithstanding the above, Groundspeak reserves the right to include limited commercial content in this Forum, in its sole discretion. Link to comment

Let's look at the forum guidelines... as regards your first point, this is not a sock-puppet account, it's a known fact that I, Jamie Sheffield, am the head of GPS-Fun. My having this separate (premium, I might point out) account is not very different from the Today's Cacher account, are they a sock puppet account also? as regards your second point, let me quote from the forum guidelines... Classifieds advertising is permitted in the ‘GPS Garage Sale’ Forum. My dictionary defines classified advertising as: Advertising that is limited to certain classes of goods and services, and usually limited in size and content.This post is in the "GPS Garage Sale" forum, and is limited to one class of goods, that is very limited in size and content (the benchmarks are small items, and there are only 50 of them, 40 now that the first 10 have shipped. Offering items for sale in this forum has been a long-term occurrance on the part of tons of people, including Sissy-n-CR. I appreciate your concern for the integrity of these forums, but feel that your ire is misdirected in this case.
