Gsak Too Big!!

Recommended Posts

I agree that it would be very handy to be able to search just one thread. More than a few times, I've had a question about GSAK which I knew has been previously discussed, but manually (or rather, visually) searching through the many pages is no fun.

Perhaps Clyde could be convinced to host the threads on his site with search capabilities.

Just in case you didn't know it, clicking on the little blue box with the down arrow immediately to the left of the topic name (not all the way to the left) will take you to the first unread message in the thread. At least that skips you over all the old stuff.

Or you can click on one of the page numbers listed, and go directly there, if you can remember the last page you read. At least these forums let you click on the 'last read' icon and go directly there. Some forums don't even have that.

I agree that the GSAK thread gets really, really long, but I'm not sure I have a better idea. Just make sure you're logged in, and click on the arrow, and you'll go to the first new post you haven't read.

I didn't know that, but it doesn't help if you have not read any messages in the thread.

A new GSAK users would have to read all 16 pages of the thread.

I think that is the concern.

Another alternative is to click the "Last post by" link at the right, which will take one to the very end.

Clyde has raised the question in the past how best to handle the situation. The volume of messages is high, and it seemed best to contain them to one longish thread rather than having dozens of individual threads devoted to single problems. There could be something in the middle, but any break=off of one thread and start of another is somewhat arbitrary. He's chosen version numbers to provide some structure; in the past it's usually been about 10 pages, so this is unusually long. Either a new release is imminent, or GSAK's popularity is waxing strong...or both.

What really needs to happen is...

1. The GPS Units and Software Topic needs to be changed into its own Forum

2. Each Hardware and Software Categaory (Magellan, Garmin, GSAK, Cachemate, Plucker, Lowrance, etc.) can have it's own Topic

3. Then you can have all the threads needed for each one.

just my 2/100 of a greenback.

This may help:

1. copy the following search string into Google (note: when this posts, the URL portion may show as a hyperlink):

+gsak site:http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=91293

2. Now, enter your search either before or after (I think before might work better) the "+gsak" part. For example:

mapsend topo +gsak site:http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=91293

3. You will now get search hits for mapsend topo that also include gsak in the page. Granted, every hit may not be directly from the gsak forum, but at least your search will be much more relevant.

Hope this helps.

A quick question in the Website forum revealed that this is possible ( Thanks again Stunod ).

Just change the RESULT TYPE from Show results as topics (which is the default) to Show results as posts. You will find this option in the lower right corner of the search form.

...and there you are!

Thanks Tzoid! Sometimes you have to slow down and take your time to see what all those knobs and switches really are for.
