I have another 'problem' along those lines also. I have the box checked to delete the items from my mailbox once downloaded. With Thunderbird, it just marks them for deletion. (I am also able to access this account as a 'shell' account using pine) However, GSAK deletes and expunges them. Is there a way to get GSAK just to mark them like Thunderbird does? I would like a safeguard in case I do something foolish again like reading my email while GSAK is retrieving pocket queries.

Another question about the Get Mail function.

When I don't Get Mail from GSAK for a few days, and more than one copy of a certain PQ is waiting in my inbox, GSAK will download them both. It will then save them both, but since they both have the same file name, the one saved last will override the one saved first. I have checked the override and not the rename box, since I don't have use for old versions of the same PQs. Consequently, only a single saved version of a particular PQ will be loaded into GSAK.

What I'd like to know is: Does GSAK save the files in chronological order (oldest first), so older files will be overwritten by newer ones, and only newer ones will be loaded?

And further: I imagine it would be useful of there would be a database history field somewhere, which would list which PQs were loaded into it on which dates. Since I started using the convenient Get mail function, I no longer know what's in there, and how uptodate my data is...

Encountered a small problem when sending waypoints to my Garmin Vista from GSAK:

...

Is this a GPSBabel problem, a GSAK problem, or a known limitation in either?

As far as I remember this is due to a fault inside the Garmin devices. Sometimes they show an error. Robert Lipe reconstructed GPSBabel to use strict Garmin protocol and removed the "-" sign.

I hope I declared it the right way.

Chris

Yes, this is correct. For more information please see this post

Yes, this is my understanding. However, the actual order is governed by by what order is provided by your pop3 server when GSAK retrieves your email. From what I have seen in testing this is always chronological order, but not having intimate knowledge of your particular pop3 server you may want to test this out (just do the download without loading the files) to make sure.

If you want the messages physically left on your server then just select the "only check new messages" box in GSAK. This will stop GSAK from getting messages it has already read, but leave the original on your server.

A perfect application for a macro. Just make sure you are using a Macro to get your mail and load into GSAK then all you would need to do is make up a .bat file with something like:

echo %1 %date% %time% >> c:\Geocaching\History.txt

Now just call this bat file using the RUNPGM command passing the GPX file as the paramater

RUNGPM pgm="c:\history.bat" Parms="12345.gpx"

Now the file History.txt will contain a complete history of the dates and times the gpx file(s) were loaded into GSAK

Macro samples to help you with this task can now be found here

:D Which post are you actually referring to here????

Yes, it is probably always a good idea to click on the "Quote" button when asking a question (you can edit the details to keep this size down if you want to) that relates to another post. This holds true even if your post refers to the the one directly above. It may be the post directly above when you click on reply, but because the GSAK thread does tend to move quickly, this may no longer be the case when you actually enter your post.

It just makes it easier for everyone to see what your question/comment is in reference to and can save some confusion.

If your post is a completely new question or comment, then by all means just click on the reply button.

I'd just like to say thank you for the GETMAIL command. I have set up a new GMail account just for my GPX'es and automated the whole process using a macro connected to a button on the toolbar. Very nice indeed!

Just a quick note to advise I am on vacation until the 29th of May.

Hopefully, the more experienced GSAK users should be able to help out with most questions.

I will still pop in occasionally (spending time on the computer while on vacation doesn’t exactly win me brownie points with the wife, and I am sure there are many of you who can relate to this  ) but my apologies in advance if some questions/emails are not answered in a timely fashion.

Cheers

Has anyone used the new "semi-automatic logging" feature to log caches for more than one member of the family?

I'm currently doing this without a macro, since I'm usually doing just a couple at a time, but I'm wondering about getting the logs to the right place, with the right finder associated. Since GSAK reconizes me ("dad") as the registered owner and that's who stays logged in to gc.com, other than logging my son into gc.com, what changes do I need to make in GSAK to have him recognized as another unique logger?

I've looked through every post and have not seen my situation (which I gotta admit spooks me a bit).

We have installed 5.5.1 (registered users) and now when I create mapsource files and open them ALL caches appear as boxes (open for found and closed for not found) Prior to this release I had set everthing up to show a different icon for caches we owned as well as a different icon for caches that are unavailable/archived. I have checked the GSAK settings and they appear to be correctly set to still do that yet everything is still showing up in map source as either an open box or closed box. Any Ideas??

Is there an easy way to launch the "log cache" page where it copies your note to the clipboard from the listing view? I figured out how when you open up a note itself, but I'm taking notes in Sonar, exporting to GSAk, and then just would like to hit F9 or something to load the log page.

Hey, i am a part of the german fraction.

Congratulation to that program, but why there is no german translation? I found many informations about this program in german geocaching chats. A lot of people wrote they would like to make a german translation but Clyde dont give an answer?

Why???? :P

I will pay fore the program soon an i think it could be an idea make a translation only aviable for paying user!

Think about it!

Clyde has addressed this request in a thread for an earlier version of GSAK. you can find his post here.

The relevant part of his response was:

...sorry, GSAK is only available in English. One day when I have nothing to do I will add other languages :P

if you look into the GSAK Macro folder you will already see a macro that does this. It's called LOGCACHE.

When in GSAK, highlight the cache you want to log, goto macro>run and select logcache. it will copy the log text from GSAK then open the GC.com page and all you have to select FOUND and paste (CTRL-V) the log text into the text box.

I am using the CACHE RAID macro provided by GSAK and I get it to work if i select a cache that I have imported via PQ GPX. Now if I select a LOCATION that I have entered myself and run CR I get the following and it does not work. Anyone know why?

mrking

EDIT: OK this is wierd, it only happens to ONE of teh locations I have manually entered. The others seem to work fine. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

using cache raid with a set location that i had inputed with just coords

New problem - Sorry if this has been covered before.

I want to print a list of my caches. I successfully printed one time but ever since when I try to print I get a error message stating:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action."

If I click print preview it seems to startup GSAK again as I get the nag screens over top the GSAK windows I already have open. I deleted the program and downloaded the new version and that didnt help.

Any guesses on what to do from here? It appears the program creates an htm file to print so I can't understand why I shouldnt be able to.

I'm running into a problem with the new Email feature.

I'm using a registered version of GSAK and a normal POP3 email account. When GSAK checks for a PQ in my email account, it clearly downloads the data (I see the % meter going) and then, when it's done, it always closes the Mail dialog box and brings me back to GSAK.

The problem is that every single time, GSAK returns with an empty cache list and the message "Nothing to display!" in the Logs window of the split screen.

EDIT: Ok, I found the problem. In case anyone else runs into this, here was my problem: I use Zone Alarm as a software firewall. Apparently Zone Alarm was treating the ZIP files as possible virus infected files, and renaming the downloaded PQ ZIP files when they were saved on the hard drive, after retrieved from the POP3 mail server. Once they got renamed, GSAK couldn't find anything to open. If you have this problem with Zone Alarm, open ZA, click on the E-mail protection category, click on the Attachments tab, scroll down to ZIP, and right click it to set it to "Allow".

Gotta LOVE GSAK!!!

Is there an easy way to launch the "log cache" page where it copies your note to the clipboard from the listing view?

mrking addressed part of your question in this post, although it still takes several actions to log the cache if you run the macro this way.

The solution is to assign the "logcache" macro to a button - you click the cache you want to log, then click the button you've assigned to logcache!

I suspect there's a problem with that location - i.e. problem with the coordinates or format.

Go to Tools>Options>Locations and check that there's a comma between each element (e.g. name, lat, long) and that the coordinates are formatted correctly.

My guess (I'm not Clyde!), since you installed the latest version of GSAK, is that the problem has to do with printing HTML files outside of GSAK.

I believe GSAK calls your default internet browser (the program associated with HTML files in Windows) to preview and to print HTML files it generates. Are you able to print other HTML files (e.g. web pages) from within your Internet browser?

If not, open Windows Explorer (Windows Key - E) and click on Tools>Folder Options>File Types. Scroll down to and click on HTM or HTML and see what program is associated with those file types. It should be an appropriate Internet browser, and when you click on the "Advanced" button, "Print" should be listed as one of the available actions.

If it's not, it's beyond the scope of this thread, but my advice would be to try to repair or reinstall your browser (or try changing back to Internet Explorer as your default browser, if you're using something else like Mozilla, by going to Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options and check the box for "Internet Explorer should check if it's your default browswer" then "OK". Close IE and reopen it, and it should offer you the option to make it the default browswer). Hope this helps! B)

Thanks Kai Team!!

I do use Firefox so after I changed my default browser back to IE everything printed out fine - still not sure what happened between my first successful print and every other subsequent attempt but everything is working now. Thanks

Any Ideas??

HELPPPPPP.....Marine Biologist

Did some more research. I copied the GSAK database to my home PC (which also is running the lastest version of GSAK) and ran a mapsource map and all the special icons we set up appear. I double checked the GSAK settings on my laptop against the settings on the home PC and they are all identical. Deinstalled Mapsource on laptop and reinstalled with no better results. Deinstalled GSAK on my laptop then reinstalled. Still no joy.

I don't think this is the problem but check that there are the files GARMIN.TXT and GarminOther.txt (if you've assigned custom icons) in the GSAK program directory. With the reinstalls that you've done I think the GARMIN.TXT file would have been replaced if it was corrupted. If you had assigned customs icons (for the 60 or 76 C/CS units) you might have to reassign them again.

Just a guess on my part...

I double checked the GSAK settings on my laptop against the settings on the home PC and they are all identical. Deinstalled Mapsource on laptop and reinstalled with no better results. Deinstalled GSAK on my laptop then reinstalled. Still no joy.

I think PDOP's is on the right track. If everything is working as desired on your desktop, do a GSAK backup on the desktop (File>Backup), making sure you have checked "Save GSAK Setttings". Then copy the back up files to your laptop and do a restore (File>Restore) from the back up files created on your desktop. (Note that you can tell GSAK where to put the back up and what to call it, and where to restore from in the appropriate dialogs).

This should copy all of your relevant files and settings from the desktop to the laptop, which should cause GSAK to behave the same on the laptop (i.e. generate your custom icons). Good luck!

Is it possible for GSAK to receive a route from my Garmin and use it for an Arc/Poly filter?

My current workflow is to build the route on my GPSr, then use EasyGPS to read the route and it to a GPX file. I then use a text editor to format it into a text file compatible with GSAK. Even with a powerful and smart programmer's editor, this is a pretty big PITA.

How can I simplify this? My first desire is to have GSAK read my Garmin, but that seems to be unsupported. What is the best supported way to do this?

The .gpx route file that EasyGPS creates should be able to be directly imported in GSAK. Also, some applications that automatically create routes are compatible for import. I use Delorme Street Atlas and can import the route it creates directly into GSAK.

You can use GPSbabel to convert a track file or waypoint list into a simplified CSV. Then that CSV can be imported into GSAK as a poly or arc filter. All you need is latitude and longitude without header rows.

You may have to edit the resulting file if you want a poly rather than an arc. Make sure the first and last point are the same in order to "close the loop." Since the file is just a text file you can use NotePad to view, verify, and edit the output from GPSBabel.

I am not as technical as some of the previous posters, but I use a combination of the multiple database facility and PQ controls to get the results I want in the form I want them. I have a Master database and a PQ Database in GSAK. I create a PQ and download the file to GSAK PQ DB and only when I am happy with the result do I update my Master Database. As far as nags and no PQ facility, I registered the GSAK product and paid for premium membership of Groundspeak. I feel it is my duty to support the sport I have come to love and people who work so hard at making life easy for me (Clyde). If everyone did this, we may get better servers that don't run out of capacity on a Saturday night and more people creating imaginative solutions to make this sport even more enjoyable.

Well, that was easy! :o

As a test, I D/L'd my GPS into EasyGPS, then deleted all the waypoints and saved the GPX. It contained only the route I wanted. Then, in the Arc/Poly dialog, I asked GSAK to load a File, in this case the GPX I just created. Slick as snot, it worked!

THANK YOU!

(Still, direct route reading would be nice, but this is a 1 minute solution)

Having trouble figuring out how to export only "Selected" files. I only want to create a small batch from column 20-35 to export into a .GPX, however it doesn't give me the option to use the marked caches. Is there an easier way than creating a seperate database and moving them into it?

Use the UserFlag checkboxes to select the caches you want then do a filter for caches with the user flag set. This will result in only the caches you have selected being displayed. Now do the export to a GPX file.

One of the basic concepts of GSAK is that whatever caches are displayed after running a filter are the only caches that will be included in exports, etc. which make filters a very powerfull tool. The abilty to save any filter settings with a name that you can use to quickly reset the same settings makes them very easy to use.

Clyde,

I send you the 9th of May an email about a bug and a problem in GSAK. The problem I have is that after importing an GPX file, nothing is updated while the status-screen says there are "... waypoints updated".

Beside of that I found a little bug in resizing the screen.

Do you have a solutions for my problem? Because till now I didn't get a reaction, while normally you respond very quick.

Team Kipie,

Clyde is on vacation right now. I'm sure he'll address those concerns as soon as he returns.

Ok, sorry. I didn't know that. I was already wondering why he didn't respond. But this explains it. Thanks.

nice idea - a buffer db - that would be a good idea for some of these guys who don't want caches like disabled caches - or any other kind of sort you might (or not) want in the main db.

tnx

I would like to buy GSAK but I have downloaded it many times and I can not get it to run on my computer, it will not launch. I see the opening knife screen and then I get a "not responding" message. I am using Windows XP Home, 2ghz machine. Have disabled all firewalls and virus software. Anybody have any suggestions?

I am by no means an expert or even an intermediate on this. but I have seen others that have dad this problem and it seemed to be related to disabling the virus protection BEFORE installing GSAK, not before STARTING it. If you had virus protection running when you downloaded and installed the program, that may be the problem.

In the past Clyde has recommended disabling "real time" virus protection for the folder where GSAK is installed, or at least for the GSAK.exe file and this has cured the problem. Open your anti-virus program and look for the ability to exclude certain files or folders from real time protection.

I am confused, GSAK doesn't run on the Palm, it sends stuff to the Palm. :)

What program are you trying to register on the Palm? Once you post that, I am sure someone will be able to help, maybe even me. :D

If you are trying to register Cachemate on the Palm, mine is in this format:

xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

If your registration code is not in that format, logon to www.smittyware.com and send an email requesting your registration code again. I had to do that when I restored my computer due to a disk drive failure, yep, it too the email with the registration code also, now it is written in my Palm too.

Edited to add last paragraph.

Is there an easier way to filter out the first x number of caches without setting user flags and then filtering on that?

Now that I have an explorist I need to create smaller files. I was surprised that when you export to the magellan format there is no option to only send x number of records.

I have Cachemate on my Palm, not GSAK.

I did have trouble registering Cachemate and had to download the little program that converted my name to numbers and then it worked.

I'm sorry I have cachemate also where do you get the program to change your name to numbers
