Perfect Gps Disguise

Recommended Posts

I've read a few of the topics regarding muggle-muffling techniques. I've seen many good ideas, but all a bit too complicated and requiring special equipment. Orange vests and clipboards may make you look official, but what if someone official is already around? Bringing a plant field guide and pretending to be collecting plants is pretty good, but takes up space in your pack. Pretending to talk on a cell phone forces you to pause your search and wait till the muggles go away.

I have now fully tested this idea. Unlike the above items, it requires very little equipment or acting skills. The drawback is that the rouse will only work with PDA's and some GPSrs.

Headphones.

Just get some headphones. Plug 'em in. Now it's an MP3 player. You can walk around and even hold the device and point it and press buttons and walk around all day long. You're just changing songs!

Earbuds are very small, inexpensive, and fit easily into a caching kit. Be careful to buy ones that don't pop out easily, though.

You become totally invisible. I walked past 5 muggles while actually operating the Axim, and they thought nothing of it. They all smiled and said "hi".

It even gives you an additional excuse to be where ever you are. Listening to music in the park or on the sidewalk is much more legitimate than just standing there. No more awkward milling about!

It makes you look like you have a purpose, and that purpose is being in your own little world of music, shutting out everything else. People will leave you to your own world, as if it has separated you from their presence. Isn't that how it seems to you when you see someone else with headphones?

The best part is, if you have a PDA, you can actually be listening to the music, which is very nice, too!

But if I did, I've found that singing the alphabet song at the top of my lungs works pretty well, too.:D

That wasn't you as a kid on Funniest Home Videos a few years ago was it!!??!!

I did the phone thing, just the other day.

I was trying to do a puzzle cache and had several different coords to look at.

After striking out at one location, (I didn't even have to get out of the car to know it was wrong) I drove up to a fork in the road to load in my "Go To" for my next guess.

As I was sitting there, a guy in a wrecker pulls up and looks at me, like "Do you need help?"

I just nodded my head and give him a thumbs up and put the GPS up to my ear.

And nodded and pulled off.

My wife looked at me like I was crazy. :D:D:)

It was the first time, she'd every seen that trick.

Although, I've used it several times when she wasn't around to be stealth like as possible.

Ever try to do the phone thin with a Magellan Meridian Series?!?

I wouldn't even try to make myself look stupid like that..

But the headphone thing might work with a Meridian.. I like the idea. And I have a couple extra pair of earbuds here. Sony makes the most comfortable and best sounding earbus, BTW; they may cost you a bit though.

Thanks for the tip.

Lowrance has two products: "iFinder PhD" and "iFinder Map & Music" which both have MP3 capabilities and come with headphones. You can see them here:

and here:

Positives:

Geocaching in disguise.

Music on the go.

Negatives:

I'm not sure why I would want to put more of a drain on my GPSr batteries.

I'm not paying attention to my surroundings as it is. Let's not add "deafness" to "walking blind".

Overfunctionality only means that when one component breaks down, you're stuck with something that only "half" works; not unlike my experiences with TV/VCR combos.

As well as being able to play mp3's another huge perk, in my opinion, is those units also have a builtin microphone. So while at a cache site you can just do a quick voice dictation about the details at the cache. Then when you get home you can play the notes back while logging your find  That's a feature I'm surprised more companies/models don't have.

Oh and you can also "loudly dictate" statistics on UFO sightings, radiation readings, hey whatever else topic makes muggles veer faaar away from you!

Antenna + music player = radio

Oh, I never thought of that.

I expected a little more chagrin from the ChickenMan.

Given the big grin when he pointed out the problem with antennae, I thought the last post should have been accompanied with a different avatar:
