The Chelmsford (MA) Public Library (main branch) has three Geomate Jr. GPS receivers that are available to borrow. They are currently available at the children's desk. I believe that one or two of them will be available at the main desk at some point.

This is a collaborative program between the library and the open space stewards to encourage families to get outside and explore the trails around town. If you know of anyone in the area who has been considering giving geocaching a try, this is a nice way to do it without having to go out and buy a gpsR ahead of time. Several families have already taken advantage of this opportunity and the feedback has been positive.

I initially sent this to the powers that be and Dani suggested I post it here.

A friend of ours has lost her dog in the New Hartford area. If you guys could keep an eye out if you're caching in the area, that would be great. This is a copy of the e-mail I had sent:

I haven't geocached in way too long but need your help. I run an active dog forum and one of our members has lost her Boston Terrier. She even went so far as to bring in a search and rescue dog from Maryland to try and track for her companion (Laura Totis of MidAtlantic Search and Rescue).

Nancy lives in a wooded area in New Hartford, CT.

Here is the google map with Ms. Totis' tracks. If geocachers could please keep an eye out while caching, it would be greatly appreciated. We're anxious to find the dog or at least have closure. Please have folks pay extra attention to where a small dog may hide or get stuck and to also keep an eye in neighboring yards.

Her name is Lola. She is a 12 pound, 7 year old Boston Terrier. Here is her pic:

She wears an e-collar. She went out with the other dogs around 5:30am 10/09/09 but didn't return at 5:45am for their breakfast.

MassGeo and volunteers will be cleaning up the USACOE trails and fishing areas at Long Pond in Sturbridge Massachusetts this Saturday October 10th. Get there a bit early and have a coffee and discover/drop TB's.

Long Pond is a popular family recreation area that can use a little TLC. We are planning this cleanup to thank the USACOE for all the properties and time that they put into them for us the geocachers, as well as campers, hikers, disc golfers, fisherman... the list goes on.


Donate as much time as you can and then explore the trails for the new Winter Friendly Geocaches in the area, which will be released the day of the event. (Coordinates to be distributed during event)

A non-perishable food donation will cover 98% of your entry fee (+ $2.00). Donations will be delivered to the Worcester County Food Bank, we also will deliver your (extra) donations of pet food to a local animal shelter (to be determined).

This will be a 1 day event featuring Geocaches, and Historic Waymarks in and around the Sturbridge, Mass area. Individual and Family Categories. All event caches will be published after the event.

The Maritime Mega Event (GC1P585) will be a one day event held at the Municipal Activity and Recreation Complex, just outside of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. The MARC offers 100 Acres of open space, which includes fields, woods, ponds, brooks and trails. It is only minutes from Canada’s First Geocache and hundreds of other Geocaching opportunites.

This event promises to be a great time! There will be Geocaching related educational opportunities, great food, swag vendors, entertainment and lots of socializing (a Maritime tradition)! It’s going to be one big Cachin’ Ceilidh!

For our far away friends, accommodations will include onsite tenting. There are also many hotels and campsites nearby and Halifax -- Nova Scotia’s capital city -- is only 100kms (60 miles) away.

Sun, surf and Geocaching! Come and experience the flavour of the Maritimes in 2010. Start planning next year’s vacation with us!

This is an inexpensive, very casual, child friendly, place to grab a meal. If you arrive in Needham by taking Exit 19 off Route 128 you will pass right by it on the way to the trailhead.

7:15 PM - Meet at the Horsford Pond Entrance to the Needham Town Forest at the coordinates given on the page:

7:30 PM - Head out on the trail.

We guarantee you that no one will get lost and everyone will find the needed information to open the locked cache at the end of the walk.

Please pass along the word since many cachers do not read the Forums and this is a bit of a last minute posting.
