Geomate Jr. available to borrow in Chelmsford (MA)

Hi,

The Chelmsford (MA) Public Library (main branch) has three Geomate Jr. GPS receivers that are available to borrow. They are currently available at the children's desk. I believe that one or two of them will be available at the main desk at some point.

This is a collaborative program between the library and the open space stewards to encourage families to get outside and explore the trails around town. If you know of anyone in the area who has been considering giving geocaching a try, this is a nice way to do it without having to go out and buy a gpsR ahead of time. Several families have already taken advantage of this opportunity and the feedback has been positive.

happy caching,
tony

Caches looking for a CO-Owner

Hello Fellow Cachers. I am reaching out for assistance in maintaining my caches located in Western Mass. Currently I am on Active Duty and stationed in Southern CA. Although I keep up with my hobby of caching in a new location, I cannot maintain my caches back in Western Mass. I am in search of one or a few individuals who would like to be CO-Owners of some great caches that are located in some "PRIME CACHING Real estate." These caches have been be in effect for some time now and have had good feedback. I have a certain method to my madness with their location, container size, and adventure of hiding/finding them.

Please review my profile and my caches and all interested individuals please send me an email. Anyone with questions, comments or concerns, please dont hesitate to contact me as well.

THanks~~~~Lostboy1

Lost Dog, New Hartford, CT.

Hi folks,

I initially sent this to the powers that be and Dani suggested I post it here.

A friend of ours has lost her dog in the New Hartford area. If you guys could keep an eye out if you're caching in the area, that would be great. This is a copy of the e-mail I had sent:

QUOTE

Hello,

I haven't geocached in way too long but need your help. I run an active dog forum and one of our members has lost her Boston Terrier. She even went so far as to bring in a search and rescue dog from Maryland to try and track for her companion (Laura Totis of MidAtlantic Search and Rescue).

Nancy lives in a wooded area in New Hartford, CT.

Here is the google map with Ms. Totis' tracks. If geocachers could please keep an eye out while caching, it would be greatly appreciated. We're anxious to find the dog or at least have closure. Please have folks pay extra attention to where a small dog may hide or get stuck and to also keep an eye in neighboring yards.

Her name is Lola. She is a 12 pound, 7 year old Boston Terrier. Here is her pic:

She wears an e-collar. She went out with the other dogs around 5:30am 10/09/09 but didn't return at 5:45am for their breakfast.

Thank you for your time.

When is a find not a find?

Call me old fashioned, but if I'm logging a cache that I DID NOT FIND, I log it as DNF. Not a disgrace - it might alert the owner that it's gone, or I just didn't look hard enough. So lately I'm seeing several smiley logs indicating "found it" when the post says otherwise -- such as they found the first stage but didn't go on in a multi, or they got to scenic points near ground zero and that was that, or they "found" an archived cache that's been taken down for repair and a new spot. Huh??? Did the rules of the game change when I wasn't looking?

A friendly reminder:

MassGeo and volunteers will be cleaning up the USACOE trails and fishing areas at Long Pond in Sturbridge Massachusetts this Saturday October 10th. Get there a bit early and have a coffee and discover/drop TB's.

Long Pond is a popular family recreation area that can use a little TLC. We are planning this cleanup to thank the USACOE for all the properties and time that they put into them for us the geocachers, as well as campers, hikers, disc golfers, fisherman... the list goes on.

Donate as much time as you can and then explore the trails for the new Winter Friendly Geocaches in the area, which will be released the day of the event.
Hi everyone. I just started a few weeks ago, and have been having a merry ole time with my iPhone. However, I realize that if I'm going to be serious about caching, I should probably get a decent GPS to use alongside my iPhone.

Is it worth spending tons of money on, say, a Dakota or an Oregon for caching in RI, or would I be fine with something under $200 like a Venture?

I realize that this should be in the "Which GPS" forum - but frankly, those forums are insane, and I'd rather ask my fellow RIers about their preferences.

Thanks!

Joe

NEEDHAM AT NIGHT - Saturday, September 26th

Looks like there is no hurricane in sight so we are rescheduling this event to this Saturday night. Since it is a little later in the year than the previous date, we can move the time back a bit. Here's the plan:

6:00 PM - Meet at Wild Willy's at 1257 Highland Avenue in Needham. Check out their site at: Willy's
This is an inexpensive, very casual, child friendly, place to grab a meal. If you arrive in Needham by taking Exit 19 off Route 128 you will pass right by it on the way to the trailhead.

7:15 PM - Meet at the Horsford Pond Entrance to the Needham Town Forest at the coordinates given on the page:
Needham at Night

7:30 PM - Head out on the trail.

We guarantee you that no one will get lost and everyone will find the needed information to open the locked cache at the end of the walk.

Please pass along the word since many cachers do not read the Forums and this is a bit of a last minute posting.

It would be helpful if people would let us know that they will be coming to the dinner and/or the hike. A note on this forum or an email to us would be appreciated.

[Children who are not afraid of the dark are welcome to come along too!]
