+snake428
I just got a new oregon 400t and love it I have been caching for about a year now and can't get enough. I thought that Wherigo's sounded fun and was looking forward to hitting some. From what I read in here these are terrible units for Wherigo. Would it be a waste of time to try them with this unit or have some of the problems been resolved? Quote Link to comment
+Map Monkey
Where did you read that? I've used my Oregon for a Wherigo cache and it has been much better than using the PDA setup. Andrew Edited January 8, 2009 by Map Monkey Quote Link to comment
+jeffnerner
If there's one nearby, by all means give it a shot. It's no more a waste of time than a DNF (and I don't know about you, but I'm still caching even after DNFing a number of times). I don't know whether it's just coincidence or not, but updating my Oregon to 2.8 seemed to help with stability of Wherigo. I've completed 2 Wherigos with the Oregon and spent 2 months testing my own on the device. I had a problem with one of the Wherigo's I did, but it was pretty easy to just start again and interact with the cartridge slighly differently (which kept it from having the problem). I had lots of problems with my own cartridge on the Oregon...mostly with the zone list becoming a huge list with names like '/'...but eventually things stabilized and it works consistently now. Edited to add: there's a number of Play Anywhere cartridges that allow you to just play things your own backyard or the local park. Try them out first if you doubt your Oregon's stability. Interesting, 'cause the test cartridge crashes my Oregon every time I try it. It's at software release 2.8 too. Regardless, I've downloaded the only cartridge in Brisbane and will give it a go at some stage, hopefully it'll work as it looks like a fun way to spend an hour or two. Quote Link to comment

What do you mean by "test cartridge'? The OR comes with a Wherigo tutorial that should run fine in the OR. I runs in mine. While there are issues with the OR and Wherigo, it has been my experience it is still one of the best units for Wherigo. A lot of friends have had GPS issues with PocketPC players. matejcik
from what i've heard, about half the Oregon units have trouble with Wherigo, and the other half works flawlessly. And that doesn't even depend on firmware version. Two cachers have two Oregons, flashed with the latest firmware, yet one can play a Wherigo cartridge without problems and the other always dies in the first zone, always in the same spot. maybe it depends on configuration of the particular unit, or memory contents, whatever. or maybe there's a faulty series out in the wild. +mc3cats
I have a 400C. I bought this specifically for Wherigos (I have a 62 I use for geocaching) I've been able to grab 5 caches with this unit. It seems the 400C has issues with more invovled carts and has no issues with the easier, less involved ones (tour style carts seem ok but carts that have lots of zones, not so good). I am pretty much done with this unit for Wherigos. However, I am NOT done with doing Wherigos. The Colorados seem to be the better call with Wherigos. So, I am looking to move on up to a CO. This seems like that better move here. Any thoughts? Anyone interested in a slighty used 400C? Quote Link to comment
Ranger Fox
Through my experience, I can say the Colorado is the most stable of Garmin's Wherigo Players. However, any way you go, the Garmin Wherigo Player is dead. Development on Wherigo will eventually continue, and these units cannot be a part of it (I don't foresee Garmin updating their players, and the units will not be able to support any connected version of Wherigo). I suggest first making sure you have a cell phone capable of playing cartridges and a data plan for the phone. If you already do, feel free to get a Colorado to tide you over. Even if new features are added, as long as the cartridge doesn't make use of them, you'll still be able to play on the unit. Quote Link to comment
+mc3cats
Thanks for the info. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Wherigos in WA and CA that I have done with my Oregon. Its a shame that some carts work where others dont. I hope that Grounspeak invests more time into Wherigos as they really are enjoyable to play. As for smart phones, I have a Blackberry 8900 Curve that I currently use. I am looking to change phones in the near future and will likely get another BB so that I can continue to run the GeoNav that Trimble has out. I have not been able to find a Wherigo player for the BB so I have not attempted it on the phone. Perhaps Magellan or one of the other GPS manufactures will invest in have Wherigos on their GPS units since Garmin is no longer supporting the Wherigo player. Quote Link to comment
+tricket
I was considering getting a Garmin Oregon 550t but reading this forum I am not sure what to get. I do not to spend the money on it if we cannot find and build Wherigo caches. Should I look into a Colorado? Or even something else? Thank you, tricket Quote Link to comment
+jonny65
This only depends on the author of a Wherigo, whether he is paying attention, that garmin has its own rules and writes the program compatible. I play with Oregon 450 and I find the player rather firm. Most crashes happend because the program itself is slow or very unstable (without errorhandlings) Quote Link to comment
+skypatrol250
I just did a Wherigo called "15". When I was done nothing happened! There are no coordinates popping up, no item tab to click on etc. I'm using a Garmin oregon 450t. Anyone know what could be the problem? Quote Link to comment

I also don't know what you mean by "no item tab to click on". Are you loading a GWC file onto the Oregon, going into the Wherigo menu item, and launching the cartridge that way? You see the usual UI after that: locations, you see, inventory, and tasks. Quote Link to comment
