Been happy geocaching for a year with my smart phone - however it went dead to quickly. Thus I now have a Garmin GPSMap 64st. Trying to learn since I've never used a GPS. i wanted to load a query onto the GPS. . . I can only see the query I created on geocaching .com.

I've been reading and researching but I'm still lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Here are the steps based on Gitchee-Gumeee's great info:

Download the Pocket Query from Geocaching.com.

Unzip the file, and you should now have at least one “GPX” file.

Plug the Garmin into the USB port of the computer.

Find the Garmin as a [DRIVE] or [storage device] and open it;

Therein, locate a file folder named something like Garmin/GPX/;

Click, drag and drop (or copy) the downloaded PQ files to that [DRIVE]:Garmin/GPX/ folder.

Right-click and select Eject, unplug the Garmin;

Go Geocaching.

Funny...the first time I put gpx files onto my etrex 20 GPSr I did it this way and it worked fine. The second time I did that, when I got out to the field and opened the map, there were no caches on it!

I resorted to going through the basecamp app and loading them that way and they showed up fine. Just goes to show you need to open the map on your device and make sure they are on the device before leaving the house...

Most certainly... and that step should be included.

After unplugging the device, check the device to make sure the caches did load, THEN go geocaching.

Doesn't matter what make/model -- Garmin, Magellan, Delorme, etal.

It's a bit frustrating, taking the download as being properly loaded... only to find out (50-100-150 miles away) that it didn't load!

Don't check it through the computer, basecamp or any other loading program. Check the unit itself.

That has bit me several times. I load it up quick, hop in the car and go, arrive at the destination (this only happens if the destination is like an hour from nowhere), and Viola! The caches aren't showing up on GyPSy. :anicute:

Anyway, yeah. Gotta check it first, just in case. I'm guessing it's due to me always being in a rush and loading the new PQ at the last minute, and the file simply didn't close properly. Just guessing. It's occupying the correct amount of space, but the GPSr sure doesn't see it.

With some garmin units I have encountered indexing problems. After transferring gpx files, the file manager I use showed they were there, but when I have turned on the GPSR, it did not recognize them. As described above, this usually happened a long way from home. I got in the habit of loading them onto an sd card. Taking the sd card out, restarting the unit, turning the gpsr off and replacing the card will cause the unit to reindex the files and usually fixes things.

It used to happen a lot with the 62s, but I have not had any problems in a long time. Now that I use an iPhone/ipad app to manage caches and transfer them to my gpsr, I rarely load a pq straight into the unit, so that might be part of it as well.

Thought I'd revive this thread. Sorry if this is a newbie question (but then again I guess I'm a n00b here)!

I have a new Garmin 64st. I've done the Pocket Query but can't actually figure out how to see if the results have transferred to the device. From reading this and other threads I think I may have to delete the file with the preloaded caches? When I turn the device on I do see plenty of caches but can't tell which of these (if any) are actually from the PQ.

Thanks in advance! :)

I have the Garmin 64st & I can make a GPX, transfer it w Garmin Express, the problem is that I cannot find the file on the actual GPS to open it. Does anyone have step by step instructions or a vid that can show me, gps challenged, exactly how to open this file on the gps unit? I am exasperated for 4 months with this issue. PLEASE HELP!

The GPX file itself is placed in the Garmin/GPX directory, which you can see when connected to a computer.  When the unit boots up, it should read the file.

You should not need to do anything.  The GPS should read the file automatically.  They are visible in the location of the type of data (waypoint, geocache, track or route).

If the data is not showing up first make sure that there are no filters preventing you from viewing them.  Also they must be closer than 100 miles from your current location.  If that is not the problem then do the following:

1) Connect the GPS to a computer in mass transfer mode.  Delete all GPX and GGZ files.  Look through all of teh directories.  If you are using a MAC, then empty the trash.

2) Go to the Garmin/SQL directory and delete all of the files.

3) Remove the microSD card.

4) Reboot the GPS.  Once it is running, turn it off.

5) Connect the GPS to a computer in mass transfer mode.  Transfer your GPX files.

6) Reboot the GPS and see if the data is there.

If you use Garmin express it is also easy to do that way. Download Garmin express to your computer. On geocaching .com create a list, not pocket query. After you have the list you can send that list directly to the unit.

On the right hand side of the computer screen, your right hand side that is.

You will see some buttons one will send the list to your Garmin unit. I also have a GPSmap 64st. That is how I did it. Beware that sending a new list may wipe out the old and replace it with the new. I also have a Delorme , those units can have more than one file of geocaches. I do not know if Garmin can.
