Hasbro new word competition

Recommended Posts

Hasbro has been having an ongoing facebook competition to put in a new word in the Scrabble dictionary (this is the first time they've added a new word in 9 years). They've been narrowing down the words, day by day, starting with 16 words. They will announce the winner on April 10. Some of you have probably seen this posted on facebook.

Today's battle is between the word "Cosplay" and "Geocache". We thought it would be fun to post a thread to talk about this, and if you feel like chiming in on Hasboro's facebook page, here's a link: Facebook link. Vote for Geocache! ;) But of course, if you like another word better, vote for the word you like best.

Just did my patriotic duty and voted for "Geocache".

I'm a bit old for cosplay. :D

I'm betting (no money, and certainly no recently-defeated bitcoins) on "zen" vs "ew" in the final.

For playability in the game of Scrabble, these would both be great additions. I can see the players coming out in droves to fight off a seven-letter word with lower-scoring tiles versus a two-letter or four-letter word with high value tiles. Two-letter words can win the game, and "ew" would be a pretty nice one to be able to drop on your opponent with a triple-letter or triple-word score.

As for our allegiance to Geocaching and the word "geocache" being added, that would be nice to see win out.

Ew isn't a word ... it's a noise you make.

"Geocache" is more than a word, it's a way of life.

One would hope that, in a fair and just world, "a way of life" would win out over "a noise you make."

From a scrabble player's perspective, I'm imagining Player 1 placing "ACHE," then Player 2 adding a C to spell "CACHE" and then Player 3 wiping up by adding "GEO."

I can't look at the word the same way now. Sounds like "geocake" in my head now.

Seems "GEOCACHE" is going to be the clear winner. It was close for the first 200 votes.

...I think the correct punctuation should be:

You are hilarious! I have to admit that I actually paused for a few minutes to play around with various punctuation/sentence structure options, but none of them looked right. So I just went with it and hoped that no one would notice. LOL!

I like your style, girl. :)

That's funny. Of course, after I posted, I realized that there probably should be a comma after graph. I was hoping no one would notice that, either.

I don't get it. I've played scrabble for decades and never knew there were words that weren't a part of it. Does Hasbro have a lock on "allowed" words? I thought you played a word, and your opponent could challenge it--if they dared

Must be more of the dumbing down of the U.S.

I'm assuming it's the official Scrabble dictionary. My mom is a huge fan of Scrabble. Even though we had the Scrabble dictionary, we'd usually end up using Webster's, because there just aren't enough words in the Scrabble dictionary.

And the official dictionary has some silly words - like "grapier" (as in He-Hi is grapier than Fanta grape soda).

Reaching the final two.

Zen vs Geocache it appears. I assume geocache is still ahead. I did see a string of EW votes recently, but I guess geocache is still ahead.

I would have thought that Zen would already be in the scrabble dictionary. Geocache might have a hard time competing with zen. It would have been pretty embarrassing if geocache lost to Ew.

I am a geocacher AND an avid Scrabble player. While I think it's great that they want to add geocache to the list, please consider that this is a contest about Scrabble. Geocache has 8 letters and would very, very rarely be used in Scrabble, whereas ZEN would be used a lot (and also the word EW which was voted out). Please stop spamming the Hasbro FB page.

AFAIK, words that must be capitalised have never been allowed in the official Scrabble words list, so it must be a word I've never heard of, "zen", in the final, rather than the original "Zen". Hmm.

They have asked people to comment/vote. Therefore, it is not spamming. If you really want to use 'Zen', then go ahead and add it to your personal dictionary.

Lowercase zen is a bit like lowercase puritan. Well, maybe not. They're more antonyms.

It's official! It was just announced on television (Good Morning America) that GEOCACHE will be the word added to the Scrabble dictionary! Thanks to everyone who voted. This is great publicity for our sport. I was happy that one of the TV show hosts, George Stephanopolus, knew about our game and gave a quick, accurate definition.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't George Stephanopolus also introduce geocaching when it was first introduced into websters dictionary??? He also might have had a good Teleprompter

Um . . . What exactly do you mean by "add it to your personal dictionary"? Since when is a personal dictionary allowed in a Scrabble club or Scrabble tournament -- or for that matter, when I play Scrabble with my friend? For serious Scrabble players, the official Scrabble dictionary is as much a part of the game as the board and tiles.

Most people aren't playing in Scrabble clubs or competitions. Most people just play it for F-U-N which is the whole point of a G-A-M-E. Like with various card games, the rules can be stated at the beginning. If you and your friends want a certain word included, it's easy enough to do that. If you don't want to, that's *your* decision.

A word being in Official Scrabble Dictionary is like someone's signature being in the physical cache log
