Posted Coordinates For A Wherigo

This isn't necessarily a "building" question, but more of a placement question. I want to place a geo-art involving a Wherigo at the top. Do I have to make the posted coordinate's location the start of the Wherigo, or can I put it elsewhere within 2 miles of the cache. (Similar to a mystery cache) If I'm allowed to put the posted coords anywhere, how would I go about presenting the coordinates to the cacher? Additional Waypoint? Puzzle? Either way it wouldn't make a huge difference, I just want to insure I'm correctly placing and listing the Wherigo. I also contacted my local reviewer, yet he didn't give me a straight forward answer. He just suggested I contact an active Wherigo hider.... So I look to you forums! Thanks in advance!

When I built geo-art out of Wherigo's here in Minnesota in the form of a canoe, my LISTED coords had to be within 2 miles of the FINAL container, no matter where the Wherigo took seekers. I thought two miles was unreasonable but those were the rules I was given.

The Geocaching.com listing guidelines do not define listing coordinates for Wherigo.

On Wherigo.com all carts have "Start at:" locations, either "Play Anywhere", or a set of coords.

When reviewing, I do this:

If the cart is a Play Anywhere cart, then on Geocaching.com, the final physical cache should be within 2 miles of the listing coords, as for Mystery caches. Staff at appeals has agreed with this.

If the cart has "Start at:" specific coords on Wherigo, then those should be the listing coords on Geocaching.com.

Edited to add that I have NOT handled a Wherigo listing on Geocaching.com where the cache owner wanted different listing coords than the Start at: specific coords on Wherigo.

How did you present the starting coordinates to the cachers?

You can have any coordinates you want on Wherigo.com. There are few regulations as to how a cartridge is to be listed on Wherigo.com. In fact, you can list the cartridge and never have a geocache associated with it. However, the moment you pair it with a geocache, the cartridge then comes under the same guidelines as a geocache, usually as a mystery cache. Thus, the posted coordinates must be within two miles of the final coordinates, any stages in the cartridge with physical hides must be listed as additional waypoints for the reviewer, the final stage must be listed for the reviewer, the listing cannot have any commercial tones, etc.

I consider it a courtesy for the cartridge's posted coordinates to match the first zone's coordinates, just like a multi. If there's a reason the posted coordinates cannot be that of the first zone, the coordinates should then denote the play area (for arcade type cartridges like Whack-A-Lackey or Battleship), and this should be noted either through the listing's write-up or a reviewer note. If there are multiple starting coordinates, I would suggest using the zone people are most likely to visit first.

It has also been explained to me in the past that a cache could be constructed that would take people farther away than two miles of the posted coordinates as long as the final wound up within two miles of said coordinates. So, if you want, you could have a cartridge that checks to make sure people visit all the other caches within the geoart before it unlocks the final. However, such a cartridge should not be allowed as it should be seen as a circumvention of the currently-defunct challenge cache type.

The starting coords were the same as the listed coords, as in part of the geo-art. But starting coords don't really mean a whole lot, at least in terms of the cartridge function. It's more or less just a reference point, carts I've built have my players go to different zones, which are the important part of the goal.

In your Geo - Art, how did you present the Wherigo's starting coordinates? Did you note the starting location in additonal waypoints... or did you provide a puzzle in which cachers would have to solve before starting?
