Evening all !

If you check my profile, you'll see I'm a complete newbie here. 1 cache hidden , 4 finds ! Long way to go :)

I'm just wondering, if any of you good people could offer me a top tip, what would it be?

I'm thinking, Premium Membership, is it worth it ?

Smart phone v GPS device?

How to structure a Multi Cache ?

Anything at all really ... Just a sponge looking to soak up as much advice as possible ASAP !

Cheers

Hi Floydsdad,

Welcome to the addictive hobby :) To answer a couple of your questions (these are my opinions only):

Premium Membership, is it worth it ? - Yes. Though only if you are going to make good use of the additional features. You may want to hold off for a bit to see if the Geocaching bug really takes a hold of you. I know some cachers who have a lot of finds, but who have never paid for premium. There are work arounds for some of the paid features if you choose not to go premium, but paying does make things simpler. For me it is worth paying for the Pocket Queries. I let my membership lapse for a while when I had a quiet period of finding last year and didn't need PQs.

Smart phone v GPS device? - Will answer with a question.. what do you use at the moment? Whichever it is, stick with it for a short time until you feel you need to upgrade. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you look through older threads here you'll find many a discussion debating which is best. Phones are getting better, but not all phones are equal. I am personally happy with my phone and the apps I use on it.

My top tip would be to always carry a pen with you wherever you are :)

On the question of phone v GPS. Phones have appaling battery life with the GPS running and are also inclined to get in a strop if dropped in a puddle/stream/cowpat. GPS's have much better battery life and you can carry spare batteries as well. They are also ruggedised to withstand the inevitable knocks, drops and wet (rain or submersion). Once you have decided you are in for the long run a dedicated GPS is definitely worth while.

Premium membership is well worth it if you ask me. I have just bought a GPS unit, so can now use pocket queries, which is going to be great when I'm working abroad, where I wouldn't want to risk additional data roaming charges by using my phone. I've only had the GPS for one day and it has taken a bit of getting used to as they can do so much, and it's hard, in the beginning, to single out the bits that are relevant to Geocaching. But even after one day I've come round to the opinion that it's better than the phone, for reasons that others have given. Help and advice is available here, in very generous measures.

I carry a small pair of tweezers (Poundland), a rollerball pen and a telescopic, magnetic pick-up tool with an LED light on the end - £3 or so from Ebay. Also a few spare logs for caches whose logs are full or missing.

If you didn't know, you can use PQs on your phone too, just like on a dedicated GPS. If you have a good caching app on your phone and use offline maps, you will use zero data, it will cost you nothing :)

If your first hide is a sign of things to come you are already on the right track! :) If you fancy coming to an event sometime I'll let you know when one of the local ones is coming up.

Thanks for that . Done a few more now so getting the hang of it. And yes , by all means let me know if there's an event. Sounds like a hoot !
