Inactive Premium members account

Hi all,

I received a DNF log on one of my caches a couple of days ago. It surprised me because it is an easy cache to find. I thought I would email the cacher to reassure them that it was still in place because it just so happened that I had checked it the previous night.

When I access their profile I saw this:

Status:
   Inactive Premium Member
   (Give a Gift Membership)
E-Mail Address:
The "send message" feature is disabled because this user is currently inactive.

I was unable to email them.

My questions are, how does an account become "inactive"?

How can someone with an inactive account place any type of log online?

I've never seen it before and no-one I've asked and that includes a Facebook group of local cachers has seen it either.

I'm not concerned about it, just curious.

Thanks for any help.

The following Help Center article might answer your question somewhat:

Status Types in a Profile Page

Thanks for that link, Touchstone.

If as per the link, the member has requested that their account be disabled, I'm still wondering how they've managed to log online. It's also a mystery as to why they're still looking for caches if they've asked for their account to be disabled.

I agree. That's actually pretty rare, to see someone with a disabled account. My guess, and it's just a guess, is that they probably wanted their account deleted, but they don't do that. Under any circumstances, as far as I've even seen.

Yes, I believe that it is correct that accounts are never deleted. I have seen one local cachers account which although the profile page still exists, his finds and owned caches are no longer shown on his profile page. Its as though all his activity has been removed from public view but the profile still exists. I can't find it now though. :( If I come across it in the near future, I'll post a link in this thread in case anyone is interested.

Cheers,

That would have to be self-deletion of finds, along with adopting out all their caches. They absolutely will never delete the history behind accounts. That I totally agree with. Refusing to delete any account under any circumstances, ever, I totally disagree with.

I wonder if they're using a smartphone app? You can view caches and log finds with a non-validated account using one of the smartphone apps, so maybe you can also do the same with an inactive account. It could be that they asked for their account to be disabled years ago, and more recently downloaded a smartphone app and have started caching again.

Just a theory.

Yes, with the smartphone app you still can log, even as "inactive Member".

For example, i got "deactivated" long ago. (it's not clear for me, how it happened. I have not communication with Groundspeak about that.)

Nevertheless, it's like that. Even renewal of PM nor changing and validation of email-address helps against that).

Since i do not like the app, i just look for caches and do not log them online anymore.

That's a great dis-courtesy to the people who've put out caches, and maintain them, for you to find. The least you can do is say thanks.

There are some great caching apps from other providers. You don't need to use the house-brand one if you don't like it. Or use the website. But please, log your finds.

PS, you just re-activated a rather old discussion from 2014...

There are lots of cachers who choose not to log online for various reasons. Others are just really behind on their logging. If it's a task you'd rather not do, it's really not a big deal. Good cache owners place caches because they enjoy the game and are secure enough that they don't require constant notes of gratitude to know their efforts are appreciated.

if they are interesting (contents or location or both!) enough, we will log them online. if it's just another 515feet cache, we'll probably skip logging it online, and writing in the log, all together. of course we'll save it in our "found - not interesting" database offline, so we can skip it next time. we'll log a online if it isn't there, since THAT is beneficial to the cache owner, and there is no way to know if it was an interesting cache until it's actually found.

hopefully we can help shape the future caches placed by propping up the interesting locations and contents, and ignoring the +515feet caches.

I just can log with the Groundspeak-app.

the other API-apps let me in to view PMOs, even add notes and put mystery solutions, but not log public.

Not being allowed to log finds changes the game, off course.

But being in this heck since many years now makes me perhaps feel a little special.

But as nobody asked or announced this to me, I just do take it as the curiosity it is. (and in very special cases, there is still the app...)

If you ever want it fixed, a note through Groundspeak's Help Center should do it.

Some of our favorite cachers no longer (or never) log online, but leave awesome logs (sometimes with poems and drawings) in the cache log.

For mine, I'd take that over a "tftc" online any day. :)

Other apps let you log as well. There might be a bug in your version. Please report it to the apps author.

If you still wish to reassure the DNFer and anyone else viewing your cache just post a Owner Maintence log to your cache stating all is well. :D

In the meantime you can try rechecking your cache to see if they were correct and if it is still there, you can just archive the DNF.

Why would you do that to someone's log? If you feel it needs addressing, write a note or an owner maintenance log.
